Hello! I purchased a domain from GoDaddy back in December, I got it from a closeout deal for about $17 total. I just got it Brandpa approved and went to change the nameservers, and its gone! I checked the whois and found it was transfered back to another user on the 6th of this month. I emailed him but, why was he able to do this and how is this allowed?

According to whois the domain was set to expire on 11/27/2017.

Looks like the previous registrant renewed the domain on 40 days after the initial expiration.

I have seen closeouts get renewed. I've had to wait occasionally but I have always received the domain. Only maybe once did I have one renewed after I purchased and paid. I received a refund. Still didn't feel good.

Sounds like somehow the registrant was able to pay the renewal and retain the domain.

hmmm.. I was under impression that if their transfer requests goes through, then its done deal and its too late for owner to renew. which I think op says happened here. the transfer out request went through, and dn reached his accnt

Does this make sense even with Alcy’s below reply? If so that sure does suck!

but if it already got to your gd accnt.. which you say your sure of.. then im intereated to hear what Joe will say about it. usually gd is just denied transfer request if owner renews it.

It did and I am Positive it did, Search up NakedLinks.com on Undeveloped, i changed the nameservers and made it a sale page there so it was in my account.

Yes, that's the interesting part. Somehow I don't think GD is releasing domains completely to new owners exactly 30 days after expiration. When would there be a redemption period?

I think after 30 days, the domain still has a redemption period. I think during the redemption period, people bid on the domain so if it is not renewed during redemption period, it goes to the winner or closeout buyer.

I think that 30 days after expiration, a registrant cannot simply renew the domain. They must pay a redemption after 30 days. But they can still get the domain back.

I think we were led to believe that a registrant cannot "renew" a domain after 30 days, and they can't. But I do think they can "redeem" it after 30 days.

I'd be interested to hear from @Joe Styler in regards to this

actually on gd, you can't renew (without fee) a domain already around 8-10 days after expiry

so at 30 your already way deep into redemption with fee

not sure when that period ends though. maybe like you say, it ends at 40? which would explain why they redeemed it and got it back

again I' m assuning previous owner had it at gd

if not then diff registrars u can transfer out or renew til 40 day mark..

who said it was registered at gd?
I missed quoting but check the previous two comments which is what I was replying to.

Although you bought/won the name, can you confirm it was actually in your account?
Yes, like I said I had it hosted on Undeveloped and had to change the nameservers to Undeveloped. I had plans for this domain, so I was checking it regulary and noticed it was gone a couple days ago, I owned it and had control over it for a full week before it was removed from my account.

Certainly sounds strange to me. Something's not right there. All you can do is persue GoDaddy support or try to message the reps on here.

I have bought hundreds of domains via GD closeout, a few of them got renewed by ex-owner but that's all happened BEFORE the domain names are transferred to my GD account. Once the domains got into my GD account, they are mine.

What happened to OP does sound strange to me too, please keep it updated.

the domain was with tucows and is now back at tucows. previous owner is not bound by godaddy's renewal rules.

What do you mean and how do you know? This should absolutely be mentioned with GD closeout deals. Why was I able to use to for a week and who gives me a refund?

Jason is right is a cross partner name, but the fact it moved over and entered your account is very strange. Do you have a cancelation email?

You won’t find Joe Styler around today federal holiday in US MLK day, something must have gone horribly wrong that they retracted it back, if the previous owner is holding it, no way you getting it back now.

The closeout or any auctions at godaddy even a but it now from auction requires time to be transferred into your account, the previous owner was reminded many times to renew the domain and if not the absolute sale happen and be transferred to the new owners account. But this one is wierd, and if the OP's telling us that the name was indeed in his account then he is the "new owner legit owner" and there is no way that the old owner can regain the name or any trasfer of the name without hi knowledge. Let us wait for the reply from Godaddy.

This is beginning to look like a bug in the protocols between Tucows and GoDaddy regarding selling Tucows expiring domains on GoDaddy's Expiring Auctions. But I agree with @The CEO. I don't think anybody has a right to remove this domain from your GoDaddy account once it has been place there. If it was me suffering this injustice... I'd raise Caine with GoDaddy Auctions and @Joe Styler.

I have an email I recieved on the 7th, 8 days after purchasing and owning the domain, it said “the Following items were removed from your account”
No refund, no explanation.

I absolutely am mad, I honestly just don’t think anything is going to be done about it, at least not in my favor. I think a massive revision of their rules is in order because at this point i was basically tricked and lied to.

The domain was on our expired auction and the auction ended with a winner. The domain was never at GoDaddy and thus never in any GoDaddy account ever for any period. It was with another registrar. We sell domains from various registrars when they expire besides GoDaddy. We have NDA agreements in place I will not comment on who they are.

When you bid on a domain name that expired at GoDaddy and it is on day 31 post expiration then you should get the domain without any issue. If it is a 3rd party expired domain (one not registered with GoDaddy when it expires) then you are not guaranteed the domain until it is actually in your account which is typically day42/43 post expiration. Each company has its own rules around expiration for their customers with various time frames for renewals and transfers.

Man the whole days past expiry date and redemption period thing with domains blows. Once it's past the paid registration period and hasn't been renewed it should be done. Makes things simple. None of this 32, 35, 40, 45 day BS that nobody really understands from one registrar to the next.

It was in my account, I bought it from closeout and had FULL control over it for a week. Shouldn’t GoDaddy maybe at the very least MENTION some sort of thing like this? So how do I get my refund back? I basically rented a name for a week and gave out an interest free loan.

if that is indeed true you should have an email from godaddy that says subject "domain transfer confirmation";

Your transfer request is complete Congratulations! We've completed the transfer request for the following domain names:
domainnamehere.com
If these domains are not currently hosted, update your domain nameservers to our parked servers to prevent possible charges from your prior registrar and enable your domain's new features.

Log in to update your nameservers!

If you didn't get this email, you didn't have the domain in your account.

Also, it would of been in your account for 1-2 days max. If you paid $17, that means it would of hit your account 6 days after purchase, which would be the 5th. The domain was removed on the 6th as you said and the update on whois confirms.

You should already have a refund back to your original method of payment.

Yeah I never got that one, just the purchsse confirmation and than an email a week later saying it was removed. I changed the nameservers multiple times over the course of 7 days though? As I mentioned it was listed on undeveloped which requires a nameserver change for a sales page. I have not received a refund yet either (9 days now since it was removed) but I suppose I will wait it out, don't even really care about that i'm just bummed about the domain. I definitely would have liked to have been notified of this possibility while going through the entire GoDaddy closeout process..
