Domain Selling: How often do you followup on leads?

Although I'm still having some challenges with my outbound marketing (I've sold none via that means). But when I was thinking about my strategy today, I thought of following some mails up.

Then I decided to ask from the community at large these few questions:

1. Do you follow up on your prospects?
2. How often do you do that?
3. How many names have you sold by simply following up?
4. How many times do you follow up?

PS. It's not compulsory you help with all the answers to the question. A hint or two will go a long way. Thank you and I can't wait to read your comments

I typically only follow up once. Any more than that and I feel like I'm bordering on harassment, although I know some other domainers will continue to follow up until they get a response.

I have a small portfolio (about 120 names) and only do outbound on a few names at a time. But in my limited experience with outbound, I've made a few sales in the XXX to very low XXXX range.

I would say at least two or three of those sales came as a result of following up on my initial email. And my response rate also greatly increases as a result of following up, even though the responses often don't end in sales.

I believe the follow-up is important for a couple reasons:
  1. The initial email may have been missed by your contact.
  2. It reinforces that your initial message was not spam. You are a legitimate person with a legitimate sales enquiry.

Sorry I should have clarified.

I was referring to when someone contacts YOU when interested in YOUR domain name. Known as an inbound lead. These are the leads I continue to contact every so often to see if they have interest in the name.

When it comes to outbound sales, I only send out one email. If I do not get a response, then I keep it moving.

Just clearing that up since I think your referring to the outbound aspect of things.

I follow up with the same person I contacted with my first outbound attempt. Occasionally (and with a big enough company) I'll try emailing someone new from the same company if the first person never responded.

Unfortunately I use the online version of Outlook, which doesn't seem to be compatible with any of the free mail trackers. Not sure about the paid ones... but I wouldn't want to pay extra just to track emails.

For eons, I never followed up on domain inquiries. I would get an inquiry, reply once and archive it (thanks Gmail!). I procured merited sales with that approach, but my sales proliferated once I began following up.

Kudos to @Frank.Schilling for convincing me that it's advantageous to follow up. My sales have doubled since then. Doubling may not sound like a lot, but when you're profiting six figures and you double that, it's a lot IMO.

I follow up 3-4 times on every inquiry, but it's not as facile as sending 3-4 emails. You have to conscientiously craft each email to elicit a response. If you don't, then following up will be unfruitful and you'll end up in :spam:.

I think 3 times is the most I've emailed or called before I give up and realise the buyer isn't sufficiently motivated.

Usually:

1) Email
2) Second Email
3) Last ditched telephone call (closed a few sales on this follow up, but usually on the cheap).

I'd never go beyond that.

Had quite a bit of success on the phone for low value sales in the UK + USA, I think Americans are often charmed when they hear an English accent on the other end of the line and that the English accent has a trust factor*

*Although nowhere near as charming as the Irish accent coupled with their gift for the gab, the Irish could sell sand to the arabs and ice to the eskimos. If I ran a brokerage firm I'd be flying to Dublin or Cork to recruit reps.

Trust me on this one.... one email + one telephone call. Its a winning strategy for outbound.

I think Indian and West African accents are at a distinct disadvantage, the former because people get sick of the sales calls and just hang up, and the latter because of the unfortunate association with internet scamming.

But I suspect a "romance language" accent would be fine, e.g. Italian, Spanish, French accents if the people can speak good English.

To stick with email and direct potential buyers to landing pages on trustworthy looking sites like undeveloped, sedo and uniregistry. Simple as that.

By the way, do you mind sharing the best email approach that has given you the best, consistent sales so far?

I believe that send mail or calls is clearly proof that you have no demand for you product (domain) , that devalues your product and that footprint stays forever.

if is a good domain, and you have that domain, then ,, you have all the odds and the time to sell at you price an email or call change that, means i need you.

try to add years to your best domains.. that was great.
