information UnitedBitcoin Acquires UB.com

NameSilo
Last month we published the news of a Chinese cryptocurrency exchange's acquisition of ZB.com for a digital asset service. This week, it seems that another cryptocurrency company has opted to acquire a two-letter .COM as UnitedBitcoin looks to have acquired the UB.com domain name from Chinese brokerage company 62.com, who have been responsible for many two-letter .COM sales in China.

Registered in 1986, UB.com is one of the world's oldest domain names, but it has a checkered past. In 2007, the domain was acquired in a silent auction for $129,420. Two years later, a company called Ultimate Bet acquired the domain, but in 2011, the Department of Justice seized the UB.com domain along with several other Internet addresses.

The domain remained inactive until earlier this year when UB.com looks to have been acquired by a client of Chinese brokerage company 62.com. Just two months later and the domain is back in use, this time under the operation of UnitedBitcoin.

UnitedBitcoin looks to be the brainchild of Bitcoin core developer Jeff Garzik, co-founder of blockchain company Bloq. According to information available, UnitedBitcoin is a Bitcoin hard fork that "will establish a credit currency system pegged against fiat currencies, and supporting smart contracts that can serve society, by nurturing worthy blockchain developments."

It is currently unknown whether this was a full domain acquisition, or whether this is a lease-to-own acquisition. We have contacted 62.com for confirmation, but so far we haven't had a response.

Thanks to James Booth (@BoothDomains) for the tip.

in 2011, the Department of Justice seized the UB.com domain along with several other Internet addresses.

How did the domain go from the Department of Justice to a client of 62.com?

Did ultimate bet regain possession of UB.com and then sold it?

Did the department of justice auction it similar to how (I think) the DOJ auctioned Ross Albreit's BTC after the silkroad shutdown? Never heard of the DOJ selling domain names. What platform do they use?

I'm struggling with an answer to that. Both archive.org and screenshots.com show no activity between April 2011 and October 2017, but WHOIS shows the domain stayed under ownership at Comlaude (Domain Licenses Limited).

They dont seem to take full control always. Some domains they do, but some others I have found that while the name shows a page showing they took the website offline, the domain name may remain in the company's name till they can log in and do something with it. This must be the latter.

Not getting your point!
If you wasted the money to register the .net, it is wasted. But the US Anti-Cybersquatting Act allows the company to sue for up to 100K per name. Of course if you are outside of the US, you can avoid paying, but any buyer would also have to be outside of the US to avoid it too, so it is between a loss of 10 dollars or 100,000 dollars. It all depends on who buys it.

Its not only about Domains (Intellectual Property) , instead DOJ can seize/Take into custody any Asset, Properties which do not stand by US regulation. After sometime when that Property, Assets clear or fulfill the standards set by DOJ then it is put for Public auction...

The procesd seems much more like Banks seizing the property of defaulters and then putting to public auction..

Will also point out I brought the name to 62.com who then decided to go behind my back and buy the name directly as the US DOJ would not do an exclusive on the name.

The US DOJ seized the domain along with a portfolio of other names when Ultimate Bet got shut down for illegal activity. The sale was completed using http://www.bid4assets.com/default.aspx and handled by the DOJ. The other names included in the portfolio were UB.net, UB.de, AP.cm and more. Here is the official link to the names : https://www.usmarshals.gov/assets/2016/absolute-poker/index.html
http://www.bid4assets.com/USMS

I've bought 3 properties on that website before.

Good buy, if bitcoin ever goes to 0, they have that in the money domain as an asset. Lame that 62.com did not respect the person that handed them the deal.
