information Did You Achieve Your Domaining Goals This Year?

Spaceship Spaceship
Last December, I published an article entitled “By this time next year, I will…” which outlined my own domaining goals for 2017. Almost a year on from that article, I thought it would be an opportune time to review the year to see whether those goals had been met. As of writing, the original article received sixty-six comments with many other domainers making their own goals for 2017. Did you achieve your goals? Comment below.

Buying One-Word .COM’s

One of my main targets for 2017 was to buy a great one-word .COM domain. Did I achieve this? No. Although I spent significant time researching potential purchases, I ultimately decided that a better short-term return on investment would come from liquid domains such as three-character .COM’s. This proved to be correct, as I bought and sold several valuable names within this category.

Whilst I didn’t personally buy any one-word .COM’s, I did broker several one-word domain names for five and six-figure fees.

Selling Speculative Domains

At the start of 2017, a portion of my domain portfolio was dedicated to six-number and five-letter .COM’s thanks to the popularity of these domains amongst Chinese domain investors in 2015 and 2016.

I sold all of these domain names at wholesale value within the first three months of 2017 and put the funds into the purchase of a four-character domain name, which I later sold for a 4,000% return on investment. I took a loss on the five-letter and six-number domains, but I reinvested those funds into something that would be more likely to sell for a higher amount.

This proved to be right, and it was a reminder to me that taking a loss isn’t necessarily always a bad move.

Speeding Up My Email Replies

Organization was often a problem for me in the past, which sometimes lead to emails remaining unanswered. Fortunately, there are many plugins and apps available that will help even the most disorganized person to become a functional professional.

Thanks to the addition of tools such as the CRM plugin Streak and this useful IFTTT applet, I was able to keep on top of emails and maintain a greater control of my inbox. Since domaining is largely an industry based online, it’s important to keep on top of incoming messages, reminders and alerts.

Sell a Domain for Five Figures

One of my goals for 2017 was to sell a domain from my own portfolio for five-figures. From a brokerage perspective, I achieved this comfortably. From my personal portfolio, I didn't get an individual five-figure sale but I did get several mid to high four-figure sales along with a five-figure sale for multiple names. As a side note, I did turn down a five-figure offer on a domain name I own, purely because I feel it's worth more.

In terms of sales, I believe it's important to set yourself realistic targets to aim for. These targets can be motivational and an excellent way to focus.

How did you do with regards to domain investing in 2017? Did you achieve what you wanted to? Looking forward to next year, how will you improve? Please feel free to post your review of your own year below, or post your domaining goals for next year.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I didn't set targets since it's my part time job(I'm a full time Software developer/engineer) but did 30k transaction volume on Flippa in last 3 months with more than 12k in profit.

That's a great achievement for me!

I also set a goal to sell one of my domains for 5 figures. I turned down two offers for 5 figures because, for both domains, each offer was the "wrong" 5 figure offer. However, interest is there so....... onward to 2018!

How do you attract investors other than listing on Marketplaces and Social Media? and emailing companies?

I aimed to make some 5 figures but and refused some 4 figure since once a name is sold it is sold and replacing them can be hard so I moved on but made some 4 figures to keep my spirit high and this year has been better than last year in terms of getting some quality names here and there at some good prices.2018 will surely be better with some of the quality name purchases. You need to wear your domain goggles so you can see what you are purchasing and for the end user that needs it so it doesn't become a liability.I enjoyed domaining more this year, to be honest, even if those expected sales didn't come in yet but I have faith they will as its Quality over crap even if some crap do sell its all a matter of what an end user wants.

Thank you @James Iles for your articles .

No - in short.
2014 was the last really profitable year for me...
2015-2017 period - nothing special...

Regarding 2018...
My focus will be on the traffic domains... and probably - on BTC...

Worst year in 5 years. $2.5k in sales with $5k in renewals to deal with. Hardly any offers/inquiries. On average I gross $20k per annum so not sure what's happened this time round.

I think the renewals is another thing in domaining.I renewed quite a lot and still do but I am positive that when the sales trickle in, the thing will start to make more sense. It takes a lot of guts to hold on and most would rather sell cheap than renew and make more but that's my opinion.I am in it for the long term and I have a full-time job and other back up but planning to quit when the right sales set in. Domaining sales are unpredictable but its sweet when the end user knocks and from their response you know a sale is guaranteed.I am in the middle of a sale that makes me feel good inside since I am dealing directly with the president of a name I purchased in May and sale is guaranteed if not for delay by payoneer escrow..2018 would be more positive @Magicpig2 and can't wait to congratulate you in advance.

- I sold less than in 2016, but I also had less domains and obviously less renewal fees to think about.

- I mainly sold new gTLDs and my best sale was $4165 for Biz .community.

- I also sold about twenty .com and .org

Great article @James Iles -- Do you have any goals or expectations for 2018?

Believe it or not, as 2016 came to a close, I had intended to spend more time in 2017 on my own domain portfolio, than concerned with what the industry was doing. That didn't happen, and as 2017 comes to a close, I'm less confident about the health of the industry, than I was at the start of the year.

For 2018, I hope to regain focus on things that actually matter to me. It is my hopes that the industry will correct itself, and begin to hold one another accountable. Though, if things persist, and domainers / companies continue to ignore mistakes, and fail to rectify issues, then IMO the outlook of 2018 doesn't look good.

Eating crow is a good thing. Many times, people are not aware when they are/were in the wrong. Sometimes they need to be notified of their mistakes, so they can take proper measures to correct them. One could argue that I have made a mistake this year by spending more time studying the domain industry than focusing on my own portfolio, and matters that will effect real change to myself, and those around me.

Whatever 2018 may bring, I wish happiness to everyone.

It's been a tough year so far, but it's not over yet.
I am proud to make some improvements on my portfolio/development site though.

I won't give up though. I will just evolve. Sometimes hardships are meant to force you into greater things.

I started domaining this year, May 2017 - so it's about 6 months journey

- acquired about 40 domains
- 2 end user sales (between 1-2k$ each)
- few minor sales XX-XXX

All in all, I made nice profit for just a hobby and learned a lot especially from fellow NP members!
Thanks!

I make sure to set the bar very low, so I am never disappointed :)

Normally my goal is to increase revenue each year whether that's $100 more or $10000 more as long as it's higher than the previous year I'm happy. 2017 was a really good year so it sets the bar pretty high for me to beat it in 2018. Not saying it won't be beat but not as easy as previous years as really above 2016 numbers.

I did not hit my 6 figure sales goal in 2017, however I will NEVER lower a target.
2017 was my best year for inbound inquiries and the most -mid- 4 figure sales.
For 2018 I am shooting for a few solid 5 figure sales, and one six figure sale.

Not sure about you but for those of us who rely on inbound via WHOIS, the decision to remove WHOIS from .IO domains has really put a damper on the inquiries that I received. Pretty much immediately after the registry decided to stop showing WHOIS I noticed a steep drop-off in inquiries (and thus sales). Now, I have also noticed similar from my GoDaddy registrations. Many of my names show only a barebones WHOIS and I do not have privact set at GD. Inquiries have come to a halt, especially .IO
