Hi everyone!

- My name is William - I currently live in the US (New England area)
- I recently started exploring the domain industry as a seller.
- I've built a portfolio of 80+ domains in the past year (currently use Namecheap)
- I've recently started selling a few of my domains through Flippa and Sedo
- I'm looking to network and learn as much as I can regarding the domain industry

This is what I've learned so far - feel free to let me know if you have other recommendations or something isn't accurate.

- When it comes to selling domains, .com, .net, and .org are usually always the top TLD's, unless you have an amazing domain with a great GTLD.
- When it comes to selling domains, it seems like you have to be constantly aware of what names and types of domains are currently trending. Like for example, it seems like .io and "crypto" related domains are trending right now. To be successful when it comes to domain selling, I feel like it's a 75/25 split between the actual domain name, and selling at the right time based on trends.
-Generic words/ short words under 8 letters are usually the most in-demand?
-When it comes to domain appraisals, estibot is the premiere and most recognizable site in the domain community.
-It's important to build a good reputation when it comes to domain selling and buying.
-When it comes to websites that offer domain platforms to sell and buy on, most of them have commission rates over 15%, plus fees?
-It general, it costs more money to advertise and auction your domain, than it is to buy the domain from the registrar.
-It's not as easy as it looks and a lot of strenuous hours go into domain buying and selling (very strenuous sometimes).

This is what I'm looking to understand/learn:

-What the best websites are to sell domains on - based on personal opinions,
the price to advertise, domain exposure, and commission costs - currently I use Sedo and Flippa. I've been on Afternic, BrandBucket, Igloo, and NameJet (still not sure if you can sell on NameJet or not).

-Tips on selling domains
a. When to auction a domain at no reserve.
b. What the best choice is when it comes to selling a domain - "buy now" or "make an offer"
c. What the best payment option is for domain transactions (paypal, flippa escrow, escrow.com, ect.)
d. When to sit on a domain vs. sell a domain.
e. Recommendations on what to put into the description page when selling a domain (domain appraisal, related sales, name meaning, ect.)
f. Recommendations when selling unused domain names.
g. Recommendations when pricing domains in your portfolio
h. Recommendations on the best way to network/get your name and portfolio out to the community (besides namepros/forums)

I appreciate any advice and recommendations regarding domain selling. I'm looking to learn as much as I can and network as much as possible so feel free to send a message!

Thanks!

@MetBob - Thanks for the advice! I do currently use Namecheap as a registrar for all of my domains and I really like their interface as well. I've noticed sometimes when I'm searching for a domain, their website freezes and I get the "not responsding" icon at the top of my browser. I've noticed it happens after a few minutes of searching but it's honestly not a big deal for me. I still decided to join Efty due to popular opinion and the fact that they offer landing pages, not to mention their efty marketplace option. Now the real question is how to promote my portfolio on Efty. Seems like NP is a good place to do that?

I've thought about selling on Namecheap's Marketplace but I wasn't sure how successful the sales were. The same goes with undeveloped. I've never been on undeveloped but those commission rates sound pretty sweet. A lot better than 20 to 30% that's for sure! It sounds like you've been pretty successful on NC. Is it just me or does NC not allow BIN offers over $1,000 their marketplace?

You are correct that they only allow prices between $5 and $1000 on their Marketplace. It is not a place for high value domains. I wish that they had it fully integrated with their main search, so that all domains on marketplace show up on the search and not as simply unavailable.

By the way, if you do use the Namecheap Marketplace, and have your own website, you can make a single link that will always take viewers to your own listings on the Marketplace. As an example mine is:
https://www.namecheap.com/store/domains/marketplace/buy-domains?seller=fundybob

I did not realize it was so easy to do this, even though it is obvious in retrospect. The link will update as you add or delete entries, and always be up to date. The only thing that changes is the seller= at the end making it your own username on the marketplace.

Good luck with your domains!

Bob

@MetBob - Likewise. I bet namecheap would be pretty successful if they added more options to their marketplace, like search results and a higher limit for selling. I had no idea you could add a personal link for your portfolio. Will definitely do that now that I have an efty marketplace. Thanks for all help - I wish you the best of luck with your domains as well!

Have you used any websites/apps for domain logo designs? I'm thinking adobe illustrator.
canva.com is a great alternative to the steep learning curve of adobe illustrator... or fiverr.com for $5 logos. I'm new to the forum as well.. keep up the good work!

Make it easy on yourself and stick to .com's unless you have had luck with the other tlds.

- When it comes to selling domains, it seems like you have to be constantly aware of what names and types of domains are currently trending. Like for example, it seems like .io and "crypto" related domains are trending right now. You can keep an eye on what domains people are paying big money for at Namebio.com. That is also a good website to help determine your buy it now asking prices. Estibot appraisals are bunk. The Godaddy Valuation tool is actually better since it is at least based on past sales of similar domains. But you have to remember it is an automated tool, so use it only as a relative gauge.

Also when it comes to selling your domains, it is good to have buy it now prices for all of your domain names, so you can get them listed on Afternic and SedoMLS. Your domains will get excellent exposure this way.

Escrow.com is great for large payments; Paypal is a very convenient payment option.

To increase your chances of a sale, you should park your domains with a sales landing page provider such as Undeveloped.com, Efty or Domahub. So end-users can visit the domain name and purchase it or make an offer.

Best of luck!
