This is stupid.
How did this happen?

I am in the process right now to transfer out domains that expired on 10-28-17 over at CheapDomain.com aka Wild West domains reseller of godaddy.

So yea their new policy started 12/5/17

I asked godaddy rep why I can still transfer domains that expired 10-28-17 successfully but these two domains that expired 11/3/17 have left my account?

not gonna mention the domains as the new owner who probably backordered it are on here.

These domains are valuable.

rep told me that this new 30 day policy? is a grace period and Redemption period. combined.

so after the 30 days? you don't technically have a chance to redeem and pay the fee to save the domain.

but I think I caught the rep and he slipped.

the reason my 10-28/17 domains can still transfer is because they fall under the 42 day rule for transfers. not the 30 day rule which started on 12/5/17.

can someone help clarify this bs?

Godaddy rep anyone here?

30 days before 12/5/17 is what? What day is that? 11/5/17 right?

So am I correct as well as the Godaddy rep is correct in thinking that if your domain expired prior to 11/5/17 that it would fall under the 42 day rule?

not the 30 day rule?

The domains are now with afternic.

it shows this on whois.

Registrant Name: Expiry Assignment Service
Registrant Organization: Afternic, LLC - On Behalf of Domain Owner
Registrant Street: c/o GoDaddy Redemption Services

Registrar WHOIS Server: whois.wildwestdomains.com
Registrar URL: http://www.wildwestdomains.com

I regret your situation. It's a valued lesson.
I always renew my domains before they being expired 1 month.
I think you should re-build your domain management process, buddy :xf.frown:

There was like 4 threads here with that news hit, you are an active user, it was big domain news, if those domains are so valuable why wait so long to renew them, $17?

This is what godaddy is trying to avoid, someone buying them, then you pulling them.

If you no longer own the domains, let’s hear what they are unless this is click bait.

Can you still transfer out?

Maybe, I'm mistaken, but I thought before he change occurred you could still transfer out until the 42nd day. Or, was that always 30 days? Or another day?

I believe 30 days is the cut off, $80
Is in play 18-30 days after expiry.

this is it. if you domain expired 1st of January, you can not renew it or transfer out on 5th of February because it would 30 days after the expiry date... that is the new policy. It only means one thing for Godaddy... MORE MONEY AT AUCTION.

@Avtar629 -- do you know if your domains sold at GoDaddy auction? Are they still the expired domains section of your GoDaddy account?

I just successfully transferred out a domain that expired on November 1st from GoDaddy to @namesilo.
[about 39/40 days after expiration] >> No issues. Completed in less than 30 minutes.

Granted -- it doesn't appear to have received a bid at GoDaddy auctions. Not sure if that's a deciding factor. ie if your domain is won at closeout, maybe it is taken out of your expired domains section, where you can no longer lock/unlock the domain? Also, if a domain is won at auction, does the email change? I was able to receive the confirmation email for this transfer at day 39.

So it hasn't taken effect yet? @Paul Nicks -- can you clarify please? Thank you in advance.

Yes, as long as their is no bids is the exception to the rule, but once a bid is in play, game over.

Is that legal?

And even if it is legal, what's your thoughts on that? It doesn't seem fair, or right to me. But maybe we don't have the full story, or maybe I am misunderstanding it? Why should the value** of a domain alter it's transfer window in favor of GoDaddy $$$?

** value defined by somebody else willing to purchase. ie bid on / won at auction.

Shouldn't all .com's have the same amount of time to transfer out, regardless of value? What does ICANN have to say about this? Do they leave it up to registrars? Does Verisign have a say?

Is this to avoid late clawbacks? I wonder if there were ever cases of somebody renewing a domain +/- 60 days after the domain expired...

Well with name.com they have sold my domain 25 days after expiry in the past I believe, pheenix prior wanted $250 after I forgot to renew a domain 10 days after it expired, namecheap I believe moved the Whois of my domain to some random Whois they use 28 days in, then wanted $125 or something, so it seems the Wild West when it comes to this kind of stuff all around. Epik gives 15 days grace I believe, so godaddys 30 days exceeds the industry norm.

Maybe, but seems there could be a better way to implement this, so this new change isn't a double edged sword to the old policy. If you're one of those domainers who struggle with renewal management [and sometimes renew 30+ days after it expired] it's probably best for that domain to be registered at a registrar where their expired auctions don't get much attention. ie those registrars that people forget even hold their own expired auctions. [rather than places that are monitored by bulk regging organizations such as HugeDomains and their activity on GD auctions]
