Unfortunately, I can't go into too much detail (I think) as the buyer purchased via Sedo brokerage and seems to have paid an extra 2.5% to keep the sale anonymous and, although that wasn't agreed with me, I will respect their anonymity. I purchased it from Fasthosts in December, they were having a $0.99 .com deal going on and you could buy as many as you wanted (or at least I could). I purchased around 30-40 with the majority being within vaping as I worked in the industry and knew it well.

11 months later, Sedo contact me and ask if I would be willing to sell the domain name.

I tell them it would be highly unlikely as I was in the process of developing a website for it (complete lies, I was going to let it expire in December).

They offered 3,000 euros, I told them I had declined offers of 4,000 euros so I'd expect something in excess of that to consider selling.

They said 5,000 euros is the max the client will go.

I bit their hand off calmly.

After seeing the company that purchased it, I do think they may have possibly gone higher if I had pushed for it but honestly I can't complain. I got lucky that an end user wanted the name because nobody ever enquired about the other 40!

I have recently started up my own small business and this unexpected income will go into developing that business (with some domain regs here and there too). I put some money in btc when it was at around 8k too so that seems to be going well and I'm not surprised cryptocurrency domain names are going for crazy prices right now.

Also, shout out to Namemesh who I got the name suggestion from (no affiliation here, I've just discovered a number of reg-fee names for niches from there. Out of curiosity, does anybody know any other similar (good) websites?

That is my go-to line whenever I'm approached for a domain name. I want them to think I'd be unwilling to part with the name and that they will need to offer more than they anticipated. It's hard to tell how well it worked in this case, as I accepted their second offer but I think it's a great way to tell them that you'll listen to offers but they better be good!

And thanks for all of the congratulations, a selling a name for 4,500x what I paid for it a year earlier is definitely the crowning achievement of my ~15 or so years domaining so far!

Congrats on sale.

This can backfire too. The potential buyer might go find another name.

Awesome sale. Congrats! I have about on 4 occasions received $x,xxx offers at Sedo and I always made high counter offers. In the end, those buyers changed their mind and walked away. It's either you win or you lose. Takes a lot of courage to do that.

Well 15 years in the game but not full time, it's a side-thing. But that particular December, I purchased around 40 domain names yes. In total, I own many many more haha.
