I've been bombarded with phone calls day in and day out regarding each domain name I register.
It's always someone with an Indian Accent(no offense Intended-just my experience).

It's usually about them trying to sell me seo services, web development etc... and even when I say no, no,no no thank you, no no,, stop calling... they keep calling.

It seems to be the same thing happening via email...

Am I the only one experiencing this?

I know India is taking off now into the domain space and has always been into tech. I have had people from that region do good work for me before. But with that being said.. if you read this and know anyone doing this.. please you gotta know how to act.. Put some integrity in your business.

I'm not sure of the right way to look at this, but i guess I'm just annoyed. Maybe I should change my whois number to 911 or 411 or to a sex hotline. I may just do the last idea(maybe for a week).

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I answered a call a few weeks ago and said I am not interested in any web services, and the guy got all pushy in selling, and it got to the stage that I said it's non of your business what I do with the domain, where his reply was, "but sir, it is my business"

damn lol

I answered my eighth Indian telemarketer call of the day and said "Another telemarketer, just what I need" His reply "Shut Up Asshole"

This has already been mentioned, but my twist works for me.
I use Google Voice.
I changed my default contact info Ph. # (auto fill when I reg a name) with the G Voice #.
Havent had a dev / seo call in weeks. :tu:
Just check the G Voice every couple of days to make sure there are no incoming, and life is good.

Now if I could just get the IRS to stop calling me about my taxes. :-P

Peace,
Cy

I have had my cell number on the do not call registry for years and it has been no solution. I am getting so many calls from India and from machines that I have decided to port my cell number over to Google voice and get a new number for my cell phone that I will never list anywhere except on business cards. I will only list my Google voice number from now on. This way I can just check the voicemails left on that number.

I had a number from London call me every day
when I didn't talk after taking the call
they went away

the I decided to talk to them
and told them "please don't call again"

didn't help

next time I let the guy talk to me
he said he won't sell me anything

I said "listen"
he had a hard time
as he kept telling me he won't sell me anything

I said
"listen , you call me every single day
I definetely will never buy anything from you!"

he said "I don't sell you anything"

The THING that pisses me off is this:

On one hand verisign/icann is saying you HAVE to have all your whois details up to date and current and correct and legit and true, ........ RIGHT PEOPLE READING THIS AND EVERYONE OUT THERE....!!!!

Well I have always abode/abided by the rules, and continue to, and always will continue to do so, because I haven't committed a crime, I am open to leave my details open as I live in a world where I don't want to feel guilt.

But. And is big BUT!

These people out there (mainly and probably all Indians, maybe some Africans... but they tend to scam you indirectly.... via like creditcard scams, or your talken europeanos with their new wannacry like things), they get away with it!

No one is doing anything about them! and that is why this thread is going to keep going on and on.

Verisign/Icann are guilty of setting rules and not doing anything about this issue.

That's how I feel right now. Lets see how I feel later

What if verisign/icann get back to you and say your number is not correct and we taking your domain or even warning.. and they probably would if domain is of any crazy value. Point is you shouldn't have to do this..

As soon as you register a domain name, you'll receive tons of email messages within hour. All from the same country.

Yep i've been regularly getting 10-15 emails a day from India, never mind calls etc.
I've become pretty good at just clicking delete and moving on but it is still very irritating if i'm honest.

I get many calls from Godaddy itself.

Sometimes for valid good reasons and sometimes for their promotions which I am not interested in.

I have told them 100 times not to call me to give me their discounts. I have also selected that option under my Godaddy profile.

Now as if that was not enough. I went ahead and hand registered a new domain name last week and my previous registration was back in 2011 I guess.

Well everything went crazy. Inbox and Mobile was going on and on about Web Development services and Hosting and SEO and god knows what.

All were Indians. I feel ashamed and sorry to see how low they were willing to go :xf.frown:

I cannot switch off my mobile as my banking and my other things are connected to this number. I do have another number that I mostly give to people on 1st meeting and once it is established that this person has some importance in my life then only I would give him (or her (y)) my main number.

Last week when this guys called me again and again I told them that I myself am a Web Developer and I am doing this when they were not even born. I have talked with Nigerian 419 guys and even got some money off them back in 2003. So they should please stop calling me. Yet no one understood it

Therefore I played the ball and said "Yes I am interested in making a website." You already know my domain name so give me a quote for it and give me detailed description actually what you guys are planning to build on it. They gave me their hard coded BS replies about 5 pages website = 4000

I told them that I want a 40,000 pages website or 400,000 pages website as it is going to be a dynamic website. So can you tell your boss that I want this?

She connected me to her boss. I told her boss that I need a dynamic website and what will it cost and how shall I proceed? Can I get a quote and sales pitch from their side?

He agreed. After brainstorming and putting lots of pressure on their tiny little brains they came up with an idea and sent it to me.

I said can I see some kind of demo of this please. So they again took some days and showed me a wireframe and demo page.

Now most of my work was already done so I took that stuff and made my website with my things on it by myself.

Task done :xf.cool:

Maybe next time they won't call me or maybe they would or someone else would try to be over smart and place a call.

Dreamwatcher all Indians are not same.

I am Indian too so agree with you Keral_Patel that all Indians aren't the same..

You are not talking about the important things and seem ready to correct or criticize on the trivial and controversial things. Make this thread and issue stronger rather to find ways to resolve the issue than wasting time..

It has gotten out of hand. It is darn right plain and simply annoying to get these calls. There are a lot of Indians out there as well as Asians, but it seems to be the Indians annoying the hell out of everyone, and then you see the Asians actually helping the domain industry. You can not stick up for Indians in the industry in my honest opinion.

They are wrecking it as bad as Asians are moving the domain/online industry forward.

Indians ------------------
Asians +++++++++++

Plain and simple.

Not understanding a word. I don't know what important things are there to talk about for those call center guys. I consider this thread as a tool for people to vent out their frustrations due to call center guys.

Almost everyone knows they can buy privacy or get free privacy on Namecheap. I also know that people want their WHOIS non protected because sometimes there are offers from real people looking to buy that domain name and those people contact via WHOIS info. If that is the case then one can just disable privacy after 1 week as those call center guys are just watching fresh registrations and not the older domain names.

I hope you can contribute some better ideas and make this thread stronger rather than wasting time like the indians wasting everyones time! Agree?

Thanks for clarifying that I should clarify.

I guess I am trying to say, that I don't want privacy, and I don't want to place incorrect details in the who is section of my domain names, and I don't want the calls from desperate people offering web services all the time. And I have registered with a do not call registry considering some advice in a previous post and waiting to see results.

I don't wish to offend you or anyone and hope you understand, another thing I am trying to say is that on one hand you have the Indians disrespecting and breaking the rules and on the other hand you have the law makers and creators turning a blind eye and I am just laying out the voice to say none of this is right and for some change to occur so as not to piss normal people out there such as my self.

In regards to the one week thing, I get calls way long after and I know this for a fact as I have answered calls in regards to domains registered or purchased months earlier

WHOIS info is meant to be available just to know who is behind the domain, and it's a normal thing. It's like posting your photo on Facebook, Instagram, Google+ just because you can do it, it's your right. And you also have the right to not be harassed / persecuted / attacked.

What you offer is defending yourself from some forms of aggression that by default should not exist and let the aggressor continue. It's not normal, and such activities should be ended. Imagine having $10 in your pocket and thief steal it. Instead of catching the thief you say we should hide the money in the underwear, and when the thief finds nothing in the pocket, move the money.

I don't want to be bothered by some "professional web developer" who simply found my info in the WHOIS. Yet, I understand it's a job, however, send your email / call once and make a better offer. If you get the client's attention, he can offer you a long-time relationship. While shitty service leads to hate and hassle.

The spam via email is one thing, easy enough to filter, but these phone calls are ridiculous. I am blown away that some yahoo is actually paying people now to try and sign up domain registrants to their web services.

So, although you can't really block these bottom-feeders from calling, there is a couple methods I use to really piss them off and at least I get some sort of satisfaction over the deal:

1) Listen to their babble for a couple minutes, and then politely insist you absolutely cannot continue with the call until they provide you with a valid credit card.

2) As soon as you realize it is a call centre ( you can usually tell from the audible background noises), either start talking in another language if you are bilingual, or only reply in "What?" "Huh?" "I'm sorry, I don't understand you, what?" etc.

3) If you are a savvy talker, turn the conversation around towards the sale of your domain. (y)

Using any one of these methods will usually result in a hang-up, and they will never call back!

I like your ways to deal with this crazy problem, and I have felt like doing similar things but what always seems to come up in my mind is that there must be so many places like this so what's the point. You can do it once or twice, and I have picked up answered the phone a few times just to know what they have to say, but it's just a huge numbers things. A domain registrant becomes an innocent victim as soon as they purchase/register a domain.

I feel there are so many people out spending all this time and energy doing all these things, if only they could channel it into something positive like building the industry up. Look at the Chinese investing in chip domains. Even if they are taking their money out of the country for whatever reasons, they are letting things flow. Indians.... impeding resisting in something great.. the online world. The domain world. The web world.

I love Indians and am proud to be Indian, and a fraction of these people won't stop the greatness of India, but surely sooner or later they need to realise what they are doing is kinda criminal, inhumane, annoying normal people out there and this is not how to do business. In their defence some western businesses/companies may use similar techniques of cold calling but I am against this. This is all a spam issue. The Indians have just taken it from the level of emails to your phone. I hope it changes as I think genuine web services companies still should be able to genuinely inquire about helping a domain owner to provide services but not this number of illegitimate fakey fraudulent companies.

I am an Indian and this is an ongoing battle every day. Although I prefer registering all my domains with Privacy protection, there are certain extensions like .in, .co.in etc. for which Privacy Protection is not supported. On an average, I get about 10-15 emails every day for web design/mobile app/vps/hosting offers and not to mention about 5-10 calls. As someone mentioned previously in this thread most of the calls originate within 2-3 days of the registration of the domain. Selling latest WHOIS data has become so rampant today that everybody is doing it!

And some also mentioned about DND - well my number is registered in DND, I am still getting calls & SMS. I have raised hundreds of complaints with my service provider (Airtel) and so far nothing has been done. I keep getting the same old - "the caller is not a telemarketer response" and the complaint is closed. I have given up on them completely.

Instead, I try a different approach - depends on my mood though and if I have time. I tell them that we are a charity and are looking for like-minded companies to help us get a website designed. Could you do it for free for us? Most hang up. If they are still there, I put up another proposal - if you cannot get us a website, you can donate some money to help us. And proceed to provide them the bank account number. That takes care of them.

Most of the time, I just hang up as soon as I hear, you have recently registered the domain abc.in.... :banghead::banghead::banghead:

Strategies:
  • use a dedicated (virtual) phone number for whois, with answering machine
  • if you insist on live phone answering then reply in a foreign language. This is the best way to disengage spammers.

Totally agree with you here. I am also on DND from last 7 years but this guys don't follow those TRAI rules and regulations. I have myself lost temper many a time with those call center guys and believe me during those days I was a handful. Thing is that I later thought that this are just poor guys trying to make a living and I went soft on it. Yet I agree with you and I support what you are saying that something needs to be done for this.

But problem for me is that one single person cannot do anything and even if I want to do something I need to find out first of all whom to approach and maybe set an example of 5 or 10 companies being penalized heavily by the GOVT for calling people who are on DND list.

Infact I will go ahead and do some research and then register a new domain name next week. As soon as I get calls I will file complaints against them and see where it goes. I think that is the most I can do in this case.

Thanks.

I've only perused this thread. But like all of us I get the same (at least ten to twenty) contacts a day. I wish they were in better English. Anybody that builds/markets etc something on my behalf has to start with reasonable and decent language skills. I do admire the way the "India" base is included and even emphasised , as if hey we are cheap and please forgive our language skills.
I have noticed how the emphasis of late, has switched from website building to a simple Logo creation offer (brand button) stuff. That tells you more about those poor souls that have been sold this 'outbound effort' as a money making go-for.

and 'brandbutton' listed at 15k ohh I had to check and save anybody from the effort, ;)
