Is there a registrar where you could easily search all country code domains to check availability. Like, you would type "wine", and it would return all 200 or so countries, and where it's available. Could be helpful for brandable domains.

No 2nd level country domains, or city domains, just countries. Would be nice to filter out domains such as wine.gr.com, wine.info.pl, wine.co.ee, leaving just wine.gr, wine.pl, wine.ee, as an example.

The closest I found is europeregistry.com but they don't allow filtering out 2nd level domains, and only display 10 or so at a time, so it's a pain just to check one domain.

Instantdomainsearch looks not bad - fast, which is a major bonus, but they only show a handful of domains. For example, in Europe - only 17, including 5 extensions like .nom.es, so in fact only 12 really. Out of 50+ country level domains actually present in Europe. But it's the closest.

IWantMyName lists more, but they bungle up everything in one big pile, and no option to filter by domain category, plus it's very slow and crashing on some domains, so pretty hard to actually use.

Any others?

www.domcomp.com , but it's not a registrar, you just can check them all there, along with prices.

It is a job that you can perform yourself with a script.
Basically you input a string, then you add all the extensions you are interested in.
Then you perform a DNS lookup query on each name (request list of name servers).
Those that return NXD may be available. You'll get a number of false negatives, but the names that return name servers are almost guaranteed to be registered. I say almost, because some TLDs (.ws ?) might have a wildcard DNS record on unregistered names, that can be bought nonetheless. See here and here for more details about this issue.

On Linux you would use dig or nslookup in a bash script. On windows you can use nslookup and you wrap it up in powershell for example.

DomComp is probably the best of those I have tried here.

There is also a registrar I found through them called netim.com, which seems even better, as they show a country flag in addition to domain ending and you can mouse over to check the full country name. Which is quite helpful with some abbreviations. Coverage is really good too, in Europe they cover 50+ countries, as an example.

For example, booking, one of the most densely registered domains geographically, is still available in .fo (Faroe Islands), .mc (Monaco), .bj (Benin), if anyone wants to try their luck.
