Hey folks, new DNW podcast is up where Andrew and I discuss what GoDaddy has been up to on the domain acquisition front, how we operate our portfolio, what our plans are for automated valuations, and a few other tidbits on our product direction.

Why are GD backorders useless?

@Paul Nicks

It all comes down to firepower. GoDaddy has never been in the game of accrediting thousands of registrars just so we can slam VeriSign at the drop. We have around 8 connections to the registry that are competing for the drop, so the numbers are not in our favor.

I'd prefer every domain go through an open expiry auction so everyone who wants to acquire the domain has an equal ability to do so.

Paul, this is a good question. When Godaddy is the real Super Hero of Domain Name & Aftermarket industry, why lag behind in backorders? About time to add some firepower in that segment to add more business to Godaddy Auctions.

Funny that we both used the term firepower within a minute of each other. This is a philosophy thing, I believe all expiring domains should go through an open auction with a low starting bid in order to allow the greatest number of people possible to have a shot at the domain. Drop catching is a complicated and costly endeavor, one I don't think we should invest in.

You could at least write an API for the drop. Much, much smaller concerns than GD have done it successfully.

Thanks Paul. Responding to my question means alot. Were you at ICANN60, Abu Dhabi?

It's a little thing, but annoying. GoDaddy Auctions. I usually have names at Make Offer. If I want to change it to a 7 day auction, I can't do it via the edit button. I have to delete the name first, then resubmit. I can change it to Make Offer/Buy Now or just Buy Now via the edit button, but not 7 day auction.

Hmm, I believe this is because the 7 day auction listing type requires more information, like reserve amount, starting bid etc that we wouldn't have access to from just a Make Offer listing. I'll check in with the product team to see if we can make this process easier.

GD backorders don't even work on domains in Redemption.

They aren't supposed to work on domains in redemption. When a domain hits redemption grace period the only person who can recover it is the original registrant.

DomainSherpa episode with @Paul Nicks

https://www.domainsherpa.com/paul-nicks-godaddy-interview/

Michael Cyger: Got it. So, but if the domain is actually registered at Go Daddy, it goes through, it expires, goes through the eighteen day grace period, goes through the additional twenty-four days where there’s the redemption period, and then you know, goes through your five days of decreasing price. Nobody puts a bid on it through the entire time. I have a back order on it through Go Daddy. Will you get it for me for then ten, twelve-dollar hand registration cost before it gets deleted, and is available for drop catchers to pick it up?

Paul Nicks: Yes.

Michael Cyger: Okay.

Paul Nicks: If it’s through Go Daddy. A Go Daddy back order will happen.

Michael Cyger: It will pick it up before it’s deleted from the registry.

Paul Nicks: Yeah. That’s the last check we run before we drop it off, and say, do we have a Go Daddy back order on this name or not.
