Hey Everyone

So I was wondering.....

Would it not be a good idea to allow members to choose if they want to have a sales thread indexed by search engines or not?

Like perhaps there should be a tick box on the thread settings where you can select not to make the thread visible to search engines. (Only for sales threads)

As we all know, NP is a reseller market place so our domain prices are considerably lower here than when we sell to end users. It would be ideal NOT to have the threads indexed to prevent potential end user buyers from finding out that the domain is for sale much cheaper here.

Completely agree. I think this was brought up before when a member lost a sale due to an indexed thread...
I believe that the auction/sales threads should not be indexed. As an alternative a rule can be made that the seller must edit thread title and first post before closing the thread.
I'm surprised not more members are behind this idea as it is harmful to anyone who buys a domain here to resell.

We already provide this option to VIP members and Business Members:
The downside is that if search engines and bots can't see it, then neither can guests, which means those listings will have much less exposure, much less chances for a buyer to see them, and much less chance of selling.

Alternatively, most members just edit out the domain from their sales threads when they finish with them, which has the same effect and eventually drops off of search engines. The same goes for appraisal threads.

@Eric Lyon Can we at least make editing the thread title and first post a rule rather than an option ?

@Eric Lyon - Thanks for the response, much appreciated.

I know there is the option to post in the exclusive domain sales area but even regular members don't always browse through the exclusive sales area....

I'm not sure how much work with be involved with implementing something like this but I have seen the feature on a tick box on other forums where u can just tick if u want the thread indexed or not...

Just asking if it would not be a good idea to at least give us the option to choose if we want the thread to be index on all sales threads?

All domain sales listings on NamePros show up under Buy Domains, including those under the Exclusive area. Members don't need to do anything differently to see those listings. :)

We have a long list of ideas and features. This idea has been on it for a while. It'll likely appear one day. ;)

After a year+ (from your post, although the idea has been around much longer) what is the possibility that this will continue only as a pipe-dream, but might be pushed onto the front-burner and get the marketplace threads removed from the search engines. Many of us have suffered from this, at one time or another. It's not an uncommon occurrence.

I think what NP should or has become is buy from a domainer and sell to another. Am out of here, and out of discussion.

Perhaps that should have been the answer to your potential buyer, in the thread you started.

Until the big news about the launch of our new service comes out, we are not working on any new features. Once that project is finished, we will begin working on new features again.

Hope that helps answer your question,

So what is the time frame about your new service? From over 1 year ago, to when in the future? <1yr, >1yr? When you say new service are you talking about a revision of NP? Or expanding (maybe even with a new name) one of your current services?

When all it takes is flicking a switch on in the software. And I haven't heard ANY good arguments for continuing with what appears to me, to be a negative status quo.
NamePros gives its members full control to remove information they post in the marketplace, and it's offered for Free. If everyone is in agreement to remove the information, then you can all remove it together. It doesn't require any actions by us. It rarely stays in the index that long for it to ever be a problem. When a problem does arise, it's usually because someone did not edit out the information (Buyer or seller or another participant of the listing).

NamePros is free because:
  • It requires more effort than a marketplace that charges you money. You're exchanging your time and effort for more potential money in your pocket. Therefore, you can space out your domain name (e.g., e x a m p l e . c o m) to help prevent it from showing up in search engines, but there isn't yet a button to do it. However, we will offer more and better solutions in the future.
  • User-generated content brings in traffic to the website. That traffic draws eyeballs to active listings and auctions and the entire ecosystem that is NamePros, which all works together to build everyone up. Discussions brings in traffic that offer free advertising for your sales listings, which you never pay a commission on and there are no listing fees. Sales listings bring in traffic in the same way. That is why it is Free. If there is no traffic, then a successful free marketplace can not exist.

The feature suggestion to have a "Option to set a thread to noindex" is on our list of things to add, and we likely will offer it in the future, because most users won't care about using it and the few that are so passionate about it will be happy. That is the best of both world's and allows everyone to be happy without killing the marketplace. That feature is not simple to create and will require a lot more work than "flicking a switch" unfortunately.

Warning: However, members that use this feature may be considered selfish by others in the community because they are benefiting from other member's traffic but not helping to generate any traffic for anyone else's listings. There will possibly be upset members about that in the future, so we'll have to think about how to help with that.

I can't share any other details at this time. The answer I'm provided is "as soon as possible" that's all I can tell you. ;)

Hope it's soon,

Yep. We all do :) And thank you for adding a perspective to this long-running subject, which I had not considered :)

One suggestion I would make to the current system would be to have domainer>enduser and domainer>domainer sales forums. At least for the Make Offer and Domains Wanted threads. I think these 2 forums both come under a large amount of criticism about the unreasonableness of sellers prices. We know their are both Domainers and EndUsers using NP's. And they should both be catered for. Both these forums get quite a large amount of criticism (from domainers) about this. If not separate forums, then perhaps the poster should be required to state if they are looking for reseller or retail price expectactions. Maybe it could even be a checkbox, which shows some kind of flag, if they are looking for enduser or reseller prices.

Maybe build a reseller marketplace. I’ve been afraid of end users would see my domain listings here. And those low offers from other markets I can’t accept as I can’t tell if they are end user or not.

Hope it's soon,

It's been just about 6 months. Has this been implemented yet? I checked your other threads also and haven't seen any announcement yet. If not. Any new ETA? Other than sometime in the future?
