CVCV .com would you take a Y and if not, Y?

from observation of requests posted in domains wanted section, i've noticed some rejections of the letter "Y" as a vowel

along with budgets that are typically less than $2,000 per name, one can't help but wonder what kind of submissions they are getting

let's say i owned "foxy com and sexy com", and was naive enough to submit them for that budget.

well, according to the criteria in some threads, they probably wouldn't qualify and i might get reported, huh?

:)

what you thank?

imo.....

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I'm in the USA, and consider "Y" to work for CVCV as in your examples (foxy and sexy -- and I would try like heck to get them for $2K from you LOL).

But like you said, if a user asks for CVCV, I sometimes PM them asking if "Y" is acceptable. I have seen some CVCV Search Filters include "Y", and some do not.(depends on the site -- I think GoDaddy Auctions does include "Y" for that pattern).

Maybe a rule can be established in the Domains wanted section that "Y" is acceptable for CVCV unless specified that it is NOT. (or vice versa).

Regards,
DN

Sometimes, the letter y is a consonant, and other times it is a vowel. The rule for telling the two apart is simple: The letter y is a consonant when it is the first letter of a syllable that has more than one letter. If y is anywhere else in the syllable, it is a vowel.

Examples of Y as a Consonant
  • yes
  • yam
  • yell
  • yellow
  • yogurt
Examples of Y as a Vowel
  • gym
  • my
  • cycle
  • baby
  • hairy
  • sky

You would be a fool not to consider buying the name Fyre just because it has a Y. There are thousands of good names that have Y as a vowel.

It depends on the letters. FOXY is certainly a lot better than FYXO :)

I think CVCY are some of the most overlooked and underrated 4L .coms in existence. Most of them are easily pronounceable, and many would make great brands.

Much better than most of the claimed “pronounceable” random 4L’s for sale on NP

Hi

Thanks for posting your comment

I tried to up this thread by asking how others felt about Y as a vowel, but somebody may have reported it and post was deleted by moderator.

IMHO it's a kinda substitute/half vowel, which sounds like a vowel. So depending on how it's used it can be considered a vowel. I think it actually adds value in some cases, like in my example of FOXY.com and FYXO.com. So I'm on the side of including it as a vowel in appropriate cases. Like when the name ends in a "Y". But not all cases. However, if you are a traditionalist, it will never be a vowel. And never the twain shall meet :)
