Sorry if this was brought up[ before, but a quick search did not turn up any results.

So here is the deal. My domains are up for renewal.
Some are keepers, others I am not too sure about.

For the latter ones I am considering to let them expire to let them test the waters through NameJet, Godaddy auctions and the likes to see whether or not they get some bids.
As I understood it I still have the option to renew my expired domains for a premium while in redemption.

Now I recall someone saying it would also still be possible to transfer a domain to another registrar while it is in redemption, as long as you unlock your domains and get the transfer codes for them prior to them expiring.

My questions:
1. Is this true?
2. If so, is this true for all registrars? Like a transfer away from Netfirms to saty LCN?
3. If so, till what date exactly do I have the option to transfer away?
4. Are there no "hidden" fees, other than the fee from the new registrar for the inbound transfer?

Thanks for reading. Hop you can help me out here.

Thank you, Jasper

Thanks @usernamex
The domains I was referring to are at Netfirms
I also have domains registered at Fasthosts

For NetFirms you are safe until Day 29 after expiry. Then it can be sold instantly so you would not have the benefit of "Auction Tasting" to see if there would have been any interest. If you are willing to take the risk, and your domain is NOT sold, you will have up until around day 43 to still transfer at normal transfer cost without penalty.

Your domains must be prepared in advance, so make sure you get all Auth Codes and unlock BEFORE they expire. Be sure your whois email is correct, and be careful if you change the email that you do not accidentally trigger the registrant change lock. Better to not have privacy, I don't use privacy so not sure how that changes things at DomFam.

Cannot help with Fasthosts from personal experience, not sure if anyone here knows yet since their discount offers were less than a year ago.

Thanks for clearing that up @usernamex very much appreciated.

So, if I understand correctly, Netfirms can sell my domain to anyone they seem fit 29 days into expiration.
Do you know how such a sale works? Does Netfirms reach out to possibly interested parties? Does Netfirms do a private aution? Does Netfirms buy it themselves?

I wouldn't really suggest this as I've seen many people lose their domains trying it. That said. :)

1. In general, yes, you should be able to transfer for a short time after the domain expires. Though you should check with your Registrar to confirm their procedures. Not all extensions support this either. If it is an ICANN extension, you should be fine, if it is a ccTLD that isn't under ICANN, it may or may not be allowed.
2. Generally, yes.
3. That is something you should definitely check with your Registrar on, because a Registrar can set their own timeline about what happens after expiration. GoDaddy has a vastly different timeline than we do and we have a different timeline than whoever else.
4. You should ask the new Registrar about that, though I have never heard of any Registrars charging a premium for an expired domain transfer.

You’re not going to be able to both experience any real benefit from seeing what happens with your names (at auction, or otherwise) and be assured of getting them back.

Next time just plan ahead and auction off the names that you don’t plan to renew.
