With thousands of startups needing a name for their new company and many more existing businesses also branching out all the time and needing names for their new line of products and services it seems that brandable domains is one of the areas that could be very beneficial to domainers both old and new and deserves to be explored further.

Below are a few points of discussion to get this thread started, if I have left something important out please let me know so that it can be added to them. If you have any tips or advice about brandable domains please feel free to share them with the rest of us.

1-What is a brandable domain.

2-How many different types of brandable domains are there and is one type better than the others.

3-What makes a brandable domain stand out amongst thousands of others.

4-What is the optimum length for a brandable domain, how long can a brandable domain be and still qualify as being a good choice.

5-What types of brandable domains are most desired by startups and existing businesses.

6-What is the best way to find brandable domains.

7-What is the best way to sell brandable domains.

Attention Newbies: It's probably best to first hear what some of the more experienced domainers have to say about this subject before you consider getting any domains, and even then it's probably best to experiment with just a few domains at a time. You should be able to sell one domain and then use the proceeds from that sale to get more domains, if you cannot even sell one domain then you are doing something wrong and need to adjust your strategy. IMO

I like hellosquid, because it sounds like a seafood restaurant. For some reason, all the hello + sea creatures are all taken (lobster, starfish, shark, etc). Is this a thing?

...Aha. I was seeing the tail of the "hello kitty" trope. Hello everything, not just creatures under the sea.

I haven't been at this all that long, I'm still very much a newbie, but the few domains I have sold so far have been brandable. I think it's about getting words that work together, which requires a good grasp of English and also market niches. I recently sold a hand reg "banishbalding" for $xxx. I can see how someone could build a brand around that. I have recently acquired "SneezeEase DOT com" & "FluRelief DOT co.uk" - medicene/cold/flu relief, "DailyIsraeli DOT com" - possibly a news/media site for Jewish diaspora and "CoziestHomes DOT com" - which I'm trying to build in to a dropshipping site then sell for home interiors.

Unfortunately I often see and feel bad for some non-native English speakers asking for appraisals on these forums and others of two/three keyword names with high search volumes that literally have no relationship to each other at all and would never enter in to the head of a native English speaker and therefore are unlikely to get sold. It would be good to ask here before the reg/buy if unsure! :)

Oh and as a PS. for sales outbound enquires and taking a few hours to just politely email potential clients with a similar brand works great. Also facebook, there's tons of people looking to start small businesses on facebook, if you can target them with tailored ads for each domain name, you vastly increase your exposure. Not going to get any $xxxxx for your names this way or even $xxxx but if its something you've handreg'd then as far as I am concerned selling it for even low to mid $xxx is a brilliant profit. I always include at the end of each email a clause which lets potential clients know they will never recieve an email off me again unless they reply to my email/contact me for more info, it's important not to appear spammy when contacting small business owners. Usually I look for potential buyers before acquiring the domain.

Sometimes english as first language will help, but in the same time you should consider that only around 30% of the buyers are native english speakers so if you think that only english language will do the work, you are limiting you customer base. Also, thousands of english words are based on latin alphabet, so a french, italian or spanish guy who speaks also english could have an advantage over you regarding brandables, because for them the same word sounds different, for example take most of the short italian words and they could be brandables used by english speakers. From my experience, creativity and hard work will do the job.
In my example, I'm not native english speaker, but I've sold over 330 domains to resellers, mostly english speakers and 19 to end users( 7 of them english speakers)
