Hi everyone,

I plan to start an online business selling mobile phone parts and accessories. Phontronics.com was unavailable so I purchased phontronixs.com, phontronics.us and phontronics.net.

Phontronics.com is the website of a well established company that repairs mobile phones. Of the three names that I own, which one is most likely to succeed given the Internet presence of phontronics.com?

Thanks

Ken

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Personally, based on your planned use, I would change the name a little and I would want to stay with a .com.

What do you think of Phontroniks.com? I would make sure your name is different.

In that situation, I wouldn't use the .us or .net version. People sometimes get into auto pilot when typing in domain names and they might end up at the other companies website.

Thank you Dynadot and Recons.

Point well taken. So here is my follow-up question. Since I already owned the .us and .net domains can they be monetized? (Throwing this term around but don't really have a good understanding of the concept :) )

I doubt they have traffic, so hence you won't be able to monetize ) just forward to your new brand and then let them expire.

Thanks Silentptnr.

You think Phontroniks is more appropriate than Phontronix?

I like Phontronix better. In your original post you put Phontronixs. I don't like that so much with the s.

Get a brand new name, don't try to ride off the success of another company by using their name.

I would get a refund on those names and register a new name that is not similar to an already established business.

Good catch! "Phontronixs" was a typo.

tronix = 9 TMs , 7 TMs cellular/mobile telephone etc related (check before go)

What do you mean by, "tronix = 9 TMs , 7 TMs cellular/mobile telephone'?

trademark

what does tronix tm have to do with phontronix? Are you TM expert?

Do you give up registering domains, where part of the word is a TM? Give me a few of your domains and I will find TMs for parts of them.

Bad idea to register a name so close to the domain name (and common mark/trademark) of an established business. They can always file a UDRP against you citing bad faith and deceptively/confusingly similar, especially since you are planning a business similar in industry to their's - mobile phones

I hear you Anantj but can a UDRP complaint be filed if the filer's name is not a trademark?

Yes. There is something known as a common law trademark which is not required for a formal filing. IANAL so please consult one but this is definitely risky to pursue

Better to make up a new name and avoid the headaches later.
