As reported by Kommersant daily on September 4th, Facebook is asking CFT Group, russian software development group to stop using domain name Facebook.ru and hand it over to Facebook Inc via cease and desist letter from August 28th. Since recent facebook.ru has been forwarding users to russian payment system Zolotaya Korona official website which was a point to its owner, as Zolotaya Korona system is developed by CFT Group. CFT Group is demanded to give up the domain name and trademark by September 30th.

Remarkable fact is Facebook.ru was acquired by CFT Group in 2005 and Facebook.com appeared in Russia in 2008.

As of today Sep 5th no official reply has been sent to Facebook Inc by CFT Group. Facebook.ru is still forwarding to Zolotaya Korona.

facebook.com needs to offer price for purchasing existing domain names from other customers i think because facebook.com cannot claim all domains extension belongs to him as he needs to pre order and book facebook name from every domain registrars.

you can see 1 company name differently in different countries and they have different services so facebook needs to offer price to different domain extension owners if they dont own it.

different governments different laws but since facebook.com is international website they need to have company in every country to register there trademark for different extensions.

"facebook" is a combination of generic words and Zolotaya Korona is no competitor to Facebook Inc, offering payment services. This is why Facebook Inc might lose this trial.

Anyways, it's been quite still since the request sent, waiting for a reply from Russian side!

Doesn't matter - 1st is 1st and 2nd is er 2nd and I reckon Facebook. Inc will lose this

Although fb Inc could argue that as it was the Facebook before it could buy the domain Facebook dot com I reckon that fb Inc will state that it was Facebook before it acquired the fb domain but it could get interesting if Facebook Inc lose but are prepared to throw money at it etc eg how much would Facebook Inc be prepared to offer to buy it and or have they already tried to buy it and if so how much did they try to buy it for?

I think it's a domain Facebook Inc must try and buy even if it costs fb Inc $100m + etc it's just a case of how much does a guy allegedly worth close to $70bn according to forbes want that domain and how important is it to the fb Inc brand?

Another thing that might play in fb Inc favour is that I think mz founded fb when he was 19? So takeaway 19 from his current age gives you how old fb is irrespective of domain?

There may only be a few months in it either way it could be close because fb Inc will need to prove that they were fb first and may have to go back as far as date of idea / concept of fb etc

But I am intrigued in who bought fb dot com before mz etc they could never have known what they had and what it would go on to become not too many years down the road
