Hi all!

My private drop catching service, Backordr.com, is slowly turning into a live service for the public. Right now, it exists simply as a landing page showcasing caught domains as I tweak my systems and test test test to get everything working at peak performance.

Go check it out! The service will transition from what it currently is, into a full-fledged drop-catching service where you can manage your ccTLD domain names, place orders, and transfer to your own registrar accounts.

Since this is still under development, let me know features you'd like to have, or anything that utterly pisses you off about other drop catching services out there.

Thanks! :)

We won't do public auctions. Actually...we won't even have auctions in the beginning, maybe even ever. The service will start as a first come, first serve drop-catch service. You place the order, you get the domain if we catch it. No auctions. No bs.

...maybe that should be our slogan? :xf.smile:

I like it!

Also agree with Hypersot's comment.

Do we only pay if the domain is caught?

Yes. However, as it currently stands, all domains listed on the site have already been caught by our software. We’re essentially catching domains we think are valuable as a way to test our algorithms.

Once we’ve tweaked and tested them, we will change the model to show a list of all domain names dropping soon and let users place backorders on those domains. We expect we’ll catch the majority of the domains users backorder.

Thanks! Yeah, being domainers ourselves (there’s just two of us), we couldn’t ethically build out the public auction feature, albeit it’s super hard to ignore the potential revenue upsides. It’s just not fair. We think that this industry should move back to the first come, first served type. Not the “who has more money” model we see everywhere today.

You used to have to hand reg domain names, and the only way to get them was to be the first person to place the order. With Backrdr, the first user to place an order on our service gets the domain :).

Private auctions may come later, but public options are not happening.

Do you have access to your own registrar? Or you using the likes of namesilo api etc?

We are a registrar. If you do a whois on any domain we've caught, you'll see the registrar as Backordr LLC.

It's a bit of a hassle and a massive cost overhead, but it allows us more flexibility and removes the need to rely on third parties which you can never trust 100%.

Impressive :)

Looked into becoming one myself but the cost is insane

Can you get .com domains? On your site seems to be all .io names

We are currently just operating in the ccTLD space. Our initial intention was to eventually move into .com and .net to compete with DropCatch and others.

For everyone else visiting this thread, we're working hard testing and developing the service, and all domains we catch in production are listed on the homepage up for sale for $99. Thanks for checking it out!

While I understand for the better domains out there (like those one-words you have for sale) or for the higher priced cctlds (like .io) to require a higher price, I do think that a $99 for a BO is a bit high.
Personally, I rarely spend so much for a BO unless the name is really good. Ofc course that's just only me.

Prioritizing the cctlds is also a good move since you'll not have to compete with the BO monsters out there. Not that I wouldn't want you to try the gtlds as well ofc, it's just there is more 'room' in the cctld space to provide a solid backorder service.

Which cctlds you plan to support if you follow that road?

Just a couple of questions:

Which cctlds have you run tests on thus far? Which will you be actively catching?

If all domains you catch will be a flat €99, how come you have a domain listed for €5000?

Would we be invoiced after you catch the domain or buy credits up front before you catch? If it is credits, is the money refundable if you don't catch the domain?

Thanks for the questions! Right now we are focusing on .io, .sh, and .ac domain names. .io is a fairly high demand market right now, so that is the main focus.

The single domain up is a personal domain from one of us that purchased it at a public auction over a year ago, it's just another place to list it for now. Perhaps this is confusing and should be removed? We'll take it off, that doesn't make sense to list it there. Thanks!

To pay for any domains listed today, we use email and PayPal. When the service is live, and after you've signed up, you can add a payment method to your account. This method will be charged only if we successfully catch the domain name you've ordered.

Right now, we're focusing on .io, .sh, and .ac. We will be focusing on ccTLDs in the beginning. If the service takes off, it will give us the revenue needed to support gTLDs down the road.

As of this weekend, we've made the strong decision not to include auctions of any sort in our service. We will indicate on our UI which domains have already been ordered, so it's clear that they are no longer available through us. We're working really hard to ensure that we acquire every domain that is backordered and that actually drops, so that we can provide a fair alternative to the other services that are exploited this industry so much, and taking advantage of all the users.

If, for some reason, this proves to be bad for our users, the only auctions we will support are private auctions. In other words, if you didn't order it in time, tough luck. But, we don't think users will be in favor of auctions, so don't anticipate much of a demand right now.

Thanks for checking it out everyone, and we really appreciate all the feedback we've been getting into our email!

:)

Hey everyone!

We were having some MX server issues the last few days (week?) or so...that went unnoticed. We've been working hard on the platform and tech, so sorta overlooked the email aspect of things. Whoops! :)

If you've been trying to inquire about one of the domains up for sale on our site, we didn't get your email. So please try again, and sorry for the inconvenience! We're only human.

:)

What pisses me off? .. Public Auctions by far!

We launched with private, silent auctions.

After doing an alpha run with a small batch of users, this was the most user-friendly way to keep things fair while also allowing everyone a fair chance at getting a domain.

The silent auction model also, most of the time, keeps prices lower than the “fomo” instilling aspect of public auctions with advertised prices and push backs to prevent auction sniping.
