I do not disagree. The implications are big for VR and AR. Like most people... something just seemed lacking with the meal you know. Would have been great to introduce something on the utility or services end of the spectrum- with all the use cases in design, retail, guides, training, education, beacon, iot, education, the list is long etc etc... and the world knows animojis and talking poop lol. I honestly think the 3D scan feature is a bit buggy that's why they didn't implement any add-on software or features to it. Keep it simple like @VRdommy mentioned. I wasn't expecting AR Glasses but I think we should keep an eye on the cellular Apple watches as a segway perhaps as a future UI/gesturing unit?

I had actually thought the watch could be used as a gesture unit.
Most especially if you are wearing 'goggles' or anything that keeps you from seeing a keyboard.
At least with some apps, and that would be app specific. The capability is there.

Up to the Soft dev's and 'if' Apple dev platform allows freedom to communicate freely with the watch.They do have rules for security purposes. I'm not active on their dev platform anymore so don't know.
Apple seems to be heading to the idea they want to sell the watch independent of the phone.
Anyway, you can see how the watch has already begun to evolve. Moving towards cellular independence.
AR will evolve the same way.

I actually think some items were not quite ready for show time, so they had to hold them back for a while. Nothing stopping them from introducing additional after the xmas season is over.

Putting out some sort of dev edition on glasses in 2018 so that content could be developed for a general consumer release within a year. Don't want a missing domino ! Everything could stop.
I just don't see them releasing consumer glasses until 'they feel' there would be enough content to use on it.
But that is just my speculation. That is the way I read the cards on the table, but most are face down.
They haven't been teasing us with it either. YET

While I definetly don't agree with the time and resources spent on that worthless FaceID, I think it was the only step forward Apple could take for a better security (remember: that think also has a huge AI network), but I'd still love it more if the phone had something VR related or at least if Apple would've mentioned VR at least once.

I am not really sure if VR is essential to Apple's business model though.

AR fits perfectly with the products Apple produce and I think they also see advantage in mixing digital overlays on top of the real world.

I think this could change if VR picks up and the majority of households consider buying VR.

But my opinion is that Apple tend to go for mass appeal. Obviously they can bring out a separate VR headset but will enough iphone\ipad owners take the extra plunge of forking out for an extra piece of kit when they can already experience augmented reality with the products they have already purchased.

Pretty sure HoloMessenger.com dropped a few months ago. I remember thinking about going for it, but I have too many holo names.

I would say though that even if only 5% of the first AR apps brand themselves as holo, a lot of you guys are going to be kicking yourselves if you dismissed holo names.

You might be surprised to know just how many have been using this tech as it is.
And for how long. This newer version of it that is similar to what is in the new iPhone has been widely used for over 3 years and folks like Facebook have been partnering with the government extracting this type of data from existing 2D Photo's and Video.
But it is much bigger than most realize at this point. It has been deployed at Retail and Banks and other unknown locations. BMV units have been using it for 4 years now.
I was surprised to see a infra-red illuminator at the check-out counter in a major big box store that I rarely frequent, by the credit card machine where you are sure to be looking at the screen.
They just look like unlit LED's because they are and you can't see IR.

They have replaced a lot of devices in just one device,
and being your "Secure ID" might be the next one.
Foolish thinking that real data security can come from recording biometrics.
For until you have real data security, biometrics is as hackable as all the rest.

I think you are right.
I believe that Apple has to much to manage the massive fine tuning of their products that they have out there now. The watch, AppleTV, iPhone and AR.
Each of this years iterations are like designing whole new platforms that must work like and with the existing.
This is why I believe they could partner with a 3rd party in handling the VR.
But they really can't ignore it for long. And I don't really think they have.
The possibility of a dual use (VR&AR) HMD is still out there. And I think likely.
Like a WMR add-on to the phone.
Just because Apple has not talked about VR does not mean it is not on their agenda.
Just not as important to them as AR in the idea of outside partnerships and external revenue streams.
Perhaps just wishful thinking on my part.

I like them a lot. I think retail will be one of the biggest areas for AR, and not only on phones but on glasses.

I think it might be a long time if ever before everybody is wearing AR glasses outdoors everywhere, but I can definitely see them being worn in certain environments, for example in the car, and in supermarkets and other shops. People will have the glasses in their pocket or bag and when they go into shops put them on so that they can easily locate product sections, things like nutritional info, and see bargains and such like. That's why I was happy to register ARSavings last night (thanks to Winfluence). Esavings sold for $18K and I can see ARSavings having as much or greater value.

So we have the release of Windows WMR update (and goggles) and Oculus Connect to look forward to yet.
I expect Oculus to have one of their own WMR's to put into the fray, but a stand alone. Just my speculation.

But honestly, it looks at least like next year for AR 'Glasses' to get started in retail markets.
Perhaps from Apple, Google and Microsoft. Even though there are a few less known already out there.
Funny is that the lessor known are not getting any attention at all and I purposely did not state them.

Earlier on this year i called Magic Leap a joke, i still think that, there is nothing respectable at all about that company from the press they receive, to demos of their product to how their business is run.

They should just give up.

Well, you may not like the way they're playing the game and I'm not a fan of all this stealth stuff, but they've raise damn near $2 billion dollars from some of the largest most notable companies and investors in the world. That says something beyond just a simple joke. I think they mean business. I think the longer they wait though risk grows exponentially. Things have seriously heated up. I think they need to come out with something this year or before the big dogs do. They couldn't compete with say Apple or Samsung or any giant name brand head to head due consumer dedication and marketing. No one outside of tech circles has really heard of Magic Leap. They have huge hurdles to overcome. Hope they saved some money for advertising. just saying. clock is ticking. show me the product

OK, So I will comment on ML.
Most of the venture capital they have raised is not going into AR and HMD development.
They have been buying medical tech company's (among other things) and I had thought it was somewhat related for a year.
They take investors in and show them a laboratory model that they can not condense into a usable pair of self contained glasses or even a 'plug-in' variety.
I have never doubted their tech, just their ability to bring the same tech they are showing off in a controlled environment down to a portable unit that is under $5k in a timely fashion.

But I had started to doubt all of it last year.
What are they going to show investors this time to give up the money.
They better be careful this time, tech advisors are watching.
Probably will be done in secret again to avoid being caught.
I'm not suggesting this is a Bernie Madoff type scheme, but something is not right.
Nothing of substance to show us. Tricky video will not work this time.
