Weeks ago, I flipped a hand-registered domain for $1100 after exerting less than 30 minutes of my time/energy. This week, thanks to @Ornelasa75, I earned $250 — from a billionaire — and not only was it a FREE 250 bucks in my account, but after tallying it all up, the combined time it took me to send @Ornelasa75 messages on namepros + time sending texts/emails to the end user + the time it took to draft/send the PayPal invoice.. STILL under 30 minutes. There’s an interesting twist to all of this. Let’s get to it.
Early in the week, I was turned on after browsing domains on namepros and seeing NameBright-registered, GOLDENNUGGET//ORG. Don’t get me wrong, I love Sin City, but I’m no gambler. I do know that Golden Nugget is a widely-known casino brand owned by BILLIONAIRE Tilman Fertitta, one of the richest restaurateurs of America. Dude is worth more than $3 BILLION, is Founder/CEO of Houston-based, Landry’s Restaurants, he owns a handful of casinos, resort hotels etc, and he just acquired the NBA’s Houston Rockets for $2.2BILLION(more on that later).
Firstly, I have plenty of friends/family in Houston and have had the pleasure of getting to know Tilman’s family/friends over the years. Secondly, I knew he’d hop all over the domain, especially considering the fact that he once owned it alongside the dot com, dot net, dot info extensions.
I thought, “Quick call, quick transfer, piece of cake”, then sent a private message to the owner of the domain, @Ornelasa75, and told him I would sell it for him as long as he was willing to go 50/50 on the sale price. #MyConnectionsAreValuable #MyTimeIsEvenMoreValuable. @Ornelasa75 agreed to the deal.
Ten minutes later, I sent text messages and emails to Tilman and his peeps, asking for the namebright info so I could at least push the domain. One thing I pondered on was actually asking for a monetary figure from people God has blessed me with being around in the first place. I’ve spent time with Tilman and his team’s families, been on their jets, been in their weddings, babysat their grandkids, gone to yoga classes with them etc lol.. so it’s only appropriate to just give the domain up, right? Not that easy. I knew I had to at some point since I didn’t own the domain.
I also had to remember that I wasn’t the owner of the domain, @Ornelasa75 was. However, what I didn’t want was for someone else to snag the domain and use it recklessly before I made my move. While I was awaiting the replies, I received an email from a totally different exec within the company, head of IT, offering to pay $500 for the domain and also willing to setup a NameBright account to quickly take control of the domain.
I like my cash quick, and I’m certain others do too, so I agreed and rather than accepting the $500 paypal payment, @Ornelasa75 and I both sent separate $250 PayPal invoices. We were then PAID by Landry’s Restaurants Inc.
Being around these guys for quite some time, I’ve recognized that $500 is petty tip money. If I was the owner of the domain, they’d probably offer me more as a “Tara, thank you for looking out for us” because I typically get high $xxx-x,xxx when “looking out” for BIG-pocketed ppl/companies that I associate with, without even offering a figure. My effort was minor, so I’m not complaining. Besides, when I think about the time Tilman jetted my friends and I to a game in Texas(he used to be minority owner of NFL’s Houston Texans), approx $6,000 was spent in jet fuel ALONE, and that doesn’t even include the accommodations that were provided for my friends. So I’ve been well compensated. Bikini tip: NEVER ABUSE YOUR PRIVILEGES, ESPECIALLY FROM THOSE THAT HELP YOU AND PUT CASH IN YOUR POCKET. KEEP YOUR RELATIONSHIPS CLOSE.
Let’s talk about this further. Many domainers don’t like buying trademarked domains, but I personally love them. Many domainers are scared of “seize and desist’ or “demand to transfer domain or face litigation” letters. I personally just ignore these ridiculous letters sent from these corporate lawyers. For the largest companies, these letters are provided to intimidate these domain holders, nothing more. When some of these company heads find out I have a domain that their hired, 3-figure-salary lawyers have failed to renew/secure, these lawyers are often fired on the spot. And I know this, because I’ve been the cause of it several times and I don’t feel bad at all. They should have left me alone, right? So, in most cases, these attorneys send these letters to save their own butt cheeks. Btw, when these lawyers finally realize I know or have close ties to the owners or top executives of the companies I’m reaching out to, they send letters apologizing soon after the “seize and desist” emails lol. Like really??
And mind you, just this year, I’ve sold and transferred domains to some of the largest consumer brand companies and celebrities we all have grown to love: Sony Music, NFL, Nabisco, 21st Century Fox, Mercedes-Benz USA, Viacom, WME-IMG, Proctor & Gamble, Kellogg, Home Depot, NBA Media Ventures, and TIME Inc, to name a few — and I’m just a rookie at this domaining thing.
I also believe flipping is all in the approach. I’ve learned this from the BEST. Not BOZOS, but ppl who ACTUALLY DO IT and ACTUALLY MAKE REAL BANK flipping domains. And certainly don’t be an idiot and waste your time listening and taking advice from ppl who aren’t putting money in your pockets to get you to where you want to be, or even, people who are doing worse off than you are, which I never understood.
In case you didn’t hear on the news, Tilman agreed to pay a staggering $2.2B in CASH to acquire the NBA’s Houston Rockets(9/5/2017) — highest price EVER for an NBA team. This hit the media just hours after I sent the text message. I really had no idea.
So, while buying my $500 Louboutin pumps the day of the transaction, I thought to myself, “I should’ve at least said how about adding a “1” before the “500”. I mean, geez, they just bought the damn Houston Rockets!” My half would have been $750(half of $1500), plus I woulda had an extra $250 to hand register a few more domains and purchase a pair of white panties and thigh-high stockings.
After splitting 50/50 with @Ornelasa75, was $250 a good or bad deal?
