After years of buying (more) & selling (less) domains - I always seem on an annual basis to have a few domains either not put to use in any shape or form and they expired.

Questioning myself - So why did i buy "the" domain 12 months ago?

Answering myself - At the time the domain may have looked attractive and what not and i bought it, although this was done more than once and domains ain't free.

Do you think like anything, domains should only be bought in moderation (eg. Not owning over 50 or 100 :P )

Yes, it's addiction, but for me it's cheap addiction. I always try to buy cheap domain, $0.88, $3.99 domain.

Wow,

How you come with this theory?

Michael Jordan has an addiction to basketball. Works out well for him. Anything that benefits u is not an addiction, but passion and love for what u do. Drinking alcohol, drugs, gambling and losing money with domains is an addiction. Something that will destroy your life. Losing money in domaining is a bad addiction. Give it to charity instead!

The only addiction I understand is addiction to the sale

People that buy, and buy, and buy only to drop and lose domains (without any sales) are either masochists that are addicted to pain, or dreamers that play the lottery already - always chasing the dream that never comes.

If a domainer is staring at years of loss and failed dreams, then as a friend I say to you... quit your addiction today before it is too late.

Both are great advice

I wish that every newcomer in domaining read it before they lose something.

Yes, domaining is an addiction but it's how you manage that addiction that is more important. Be sensible. The real difference is whether you are making money or losing it!

The problem with domaining is the very low barrier to entry. I also think the low yearly renewal rates encourages people to waste money on domains they otherwise never would.

For everyone it starts out as one, then you learn and grow, then sales become your new fix, then some turn their domains into websites and that again becomes an addiction... and all the other possible roads this industry might take you, can become addictive... if you're succeeding.
Point is, if you love what you do, it's always an addiction!
But if you're just plowing money into it blindly, never growing, then it's not the domaining that's the addiction, but something else you crave, whatever that may be, is based on you as a person.

Domaining is a true addiction like alcohol, tobacco, drugs, food, casino, games, the Internet and should be recognized as such. Some people have lost huge sums of money through it. Domaining can ruin lives and hurt your wallet, not to mention your social life.

Domaining is not an addiction. Just like any business, you must take risks, calculated risks, based on knowledge. Even then, nothing is guaranteed. No pains, no gains!

I don't think it is an addiction. It is an investment.

We buy things with the sole intention of making more from it.
Similar to stock market or similar to collecting baseball cards.

Domaining is kind of in the middle of both. Some collect domains for their scarcity because they are old, because they have a great pattern, etc. While other buy domains simply to turn a profit as an investment like investing in antique furniture or paintings.

But in the end, its all driven by the .. I don't know what would be the english translation. In french we say : L'appat du gain.

Whether you make or lose money is just a matter of being a smart, lucky or a dumb investor.
