Hey everyone, i'm just a rookie. I started investing in Domain late - 2017, so i just have a small portfolio ( about 400 domains). Recently, i realized that it's too hard to buy a good name now. Why ?
1> GoDaddy Expired Auctions : as you know, HugeDomains gets 40% -50% good domains, 20-30% will belong to big players ( who has big pocket - huge capital to burn), and the rest belong to us. You can see some names below with their prices.
ensureit.com $175
searchmind.com $295
deyde.com $215
ablepower.com $425
aceadvisory.com $117
innovacenter.com $120
bellecreative.com $127
crownalliance.com $127
corptex.com $273
2> Dropped List : nowaday, we can't find many high quality domain names on dropped list because of the increasing of Drop Catching systems.
- With individual domainers: they prefer to pay 59$-79$ for the name that they think it good enough than wait and reg it on Dropped List.
- With Domain Companies: they have their own Registers, so that they can catch expired names quickly. And the rest in Dropped list almost are junks.
3> Auctions : people now become crazy in bidding war. They are willing to pay more and more money for a name that has bids despite its quality. If you want to get a good one, you must pay more 30-40% than before.
Domain's price now is crazy.
So what do you think ?

It's Hard to buy good name now.

It's always been hard, even in the earliest days it was hard, just for different reasons.

Instead of asking why it's so hard, ask yourself how hard you actually are willing to work at it.

The market is what it is, no point complaining that you can't easily grab a "million dollar" name, it's the same for everyone. Some folk have 400 names and some have 1 great name, just saying there are options when it comes to domain name investing.

I agree, Though this is nothing really new, It has been going on for many years, I never participate in the drop auctions, never have, never will, I wont go into exactly why, But i will leave it at this, I am a very suspicious person by nature.
the snapnames scandal made me take a 6 or 7 year break from domaining.

Shouldn't be an excuse. Could have gone with different platforms buying domain and as always one could buy domains privately.

I wish it was hard to find "good" names. I've just looked at the list of names I've picked up in the last couple of months, and it's far too long. I need to spend far more time selling, and a lot less time treasure hunting.

Whenever you want something good, you do have to work hard for it.
The harder you work for something, the greater you'll feel when you achieve it.

I think it is not all that hard to find good names. We have loads of names for sale, some of which we bought earlier on. The point is that domainers think too much on a buy - sell basis. I used to buy names and develop the potential that was inside them.

For example we have a domain realcrimeclips.com for sale. A buyer should pay a good price to become owner. But if buyer develops it, by setting up the website and getting some advertisers on, the value will skyrocket. That also makes it worth to escape the 100 or 200 USD circle of average names. Invest some real money in a great name.

I believe the new domaining will be buying domains, develop them and sell them on. Selling a name is selling a rather hollow thing. But if a buyer sees a running website with some ads and some traffic buyer has an idea of what it can become. That is more visible, and more easy to sell.

Domains may cost money, as long as they are having a clear potential to be easily developped in to a website with traffic. Anyway, that is my opinion.

It's not hard to find "Good" name, buddy. We can easily find many quality names in Auctions, Pending Delete list. But the most important thing is : How can we get good names with prospective prices.
We need money to keep our portfolio running and expanding everyday, so we couldn't spend all of our money in a single day or month. We must consider everyday to find good name and fight against others to get them.
My watchlist contains at least 30 names each day, but i just only have 3-5 names due to some conditions ( the most common condition is their prices). Luckily, i got some cool names with low-price today :)
SumoSearch.com - $59
SmartLands.com -$130

Hello George,

I understand what you mean. But what I meant is that domainers should look into buying more expensive names. The expensive names are getting rarer and rarer, so chances are their value will skyrocket at some point. And if you buy a name you can use to develop an activity it can even do better faster.

At present we own drivesavecard.com. An easy to develop name. Create a card which people can show in order to get a discount on loads of things related to cars. Even if the card itself is a giveaway you can make serious money by having a lot of people owning and registering the card. Each name will approximately be worth 40 USD, so if you have a few thousand names it could be fun.

A lot of work? Maybe. But buying a lot of cheap names is also a lot of work. And every year you have a renewal fee to pay. And owning one great name at 5,000 USD could be better than having 100 at 50 USD each.

Anyway,it is my personal vision on domains in general.

The great advantage you have is that you probably sell a lot faster, and create more speed in your income. We just today put up a name for sale, and I bet it will not sell today at a good price. It can take weeks. So on sales you absolutely have the edge.

Nice comment, buddy. But there are some points i want to tell:
1>But what I meant is that domainers should look into buying more expensive names. The expensive names are getting rarer and rarer, so chances are their value will skyrocket at some point. => Yes, owning expensive domains which have more advantage to be sold is our dream. But at the beginning of this topic, i mentioned that there are domainers who don't have more money to invest like me, it's really really difficult. For example, in the early of this year, i could easily buy a "good name" - in my opinion - in GD Expired Auctions or Close Out, but now the kinds of name that cost me $13-$20 just available to have for at least $80. The increasing of prices is also with Domain Catching Services ( Pheenix increased their price 3 times this year, DynaDot too). So how can i have more capital to invest, if i'm living in the developing country where i can live well with $200 /month?
2>At present we own drivesavecard.com. An easy to develop name. Create a card which people can show in order to get a discount on loads of things related to cars. Even if the card itself is a giveaway you can make serious money by having a lot of people owning and registering the card.=> I really don't have knowledge to develop sites, but as i know, it used to be profitable. In the early 2010s, there are domainers who created their sites, added contents and lived well with their parking/ advertising revenus without selling any names if they didn't want. But this period ended. So if you are doing well with your names, could you share some info about How many sites do you have now ? And are they profitable ? How much you earn form them ?
Please remember that if an end-user see a domain with banner " For Sale", it has more advantage to sell than a developed site.
3> And owning one great name at 5,000 USD could be better than having 100 at 50 USD each => Right or wrong, it depends on your strategy. To me, i 'd love to have 100 names at $50 than having only 1 at $5000. I really don't know why, but to me, having more average-quality names is having more chances to sell. I'm building my portfolio on this way : try to find names in the range of $8 - $80, have good History, have at least 4 Potential Buyers. People said that there are only 2% names in your portfolio could be sold, but i think if you do right, you can have the higher ratio. Maybe i'm doing wrong, but i will keep this strategy till the end of this year, then dissect the result and change :)
Btw, thanks for your warmly comment :) That's is the best thing of life : We have more difficult thinking, and we consider, we discuss to find the best for us :)

Now here is an interesting contrast. Here on NP a lot of people say you should buy expensive names because you will make more money. Buying a name for $5,000 and selling it for $10,000 doubles your money.

On the crypto forums many people say you have missed the boat on Bitcoin, because buying a Bitcoin for $5,000 and selling it for $10,000 only doubles your money.

In both cases there is a considerable potential for a loss.

"buying" a domain name for $10, and selling it for $500 is a great return on your investment, and there is a minimal potential for a loss.

I don't know, honestly.
The most expensive name i bought just cost $141 so i don't know if i have a $5k name, is it easy to flip ?
I've spent $ 10k to have 460 names, and i won't stop until i have 10k names :xf.laugh:
Someday, when i rich enough, i will buy a 5k name and try to flip it. But it's not my business now :)
Now i don't reg domains on Dropped List, due to their poor-quality. So if you can get cool names for only $8 or $10, it's very excited :-P

I heard it used to be way easier back in the days not just with buying and hand reg but with parking etc. I wonder where this industry is going with all these companies and easy exposure to domaining available to anyone now...whatever it is, I am ready for the ride!:xf.grin: It's probably better to do this as a hobby though because if this is how you make your living as a newbie, it'll be much more stressful and you'll have less room for patience that this business requires :xf.smile:

Cheer up, kiddoooo!

If I could buy huzr/com from drop for only 165, then throw it on flippa for 215, then u can do similar things.

Over the last twenty years, I"ve never actually bought a domain name (believe it or not) and yes, I'm "Old School". But to this day, I'm still hand reg dotcoms of value for $8 and only dotcoms.

They are available, but you have to think outside the box. I admit it helps that I've been marketing online since 1996. That's why I see what most domain investors don't.

I agree. Handregs remain the best. Must add to that that I prefer to develop them prior t a sale, that brings in better money as you do in fact sell a business. But reggedd at 10 bucks and sold at a few k it can be lucrative. Guess I am also too old school to buy domains, with a few exeptions.
