for you to let those expiring domains drop?

There comes a time when we as domain investors have to decide which of those domain we renew, and those we choose to drop. For some, this can be difficult time whether you are new to domaining, or someone who a has built up an impressive porfolio.

How hard is it for you?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Fairly easy for me, because all my names are at a registrar where they have the potential to be auctioned off at namejet for 60/40 Split before dropped.

I normally check with my girlfriend as she always knows how hard is it.

Fairly easy now but took me a few years before I started to drop domains with more confidence.

REALLY hard...every name registered had a purpose and a vision but when reality sets in that the name is a dud, it is tough to let go...but once I make the decision to let it go, I never look back or 'check' what happened to it...too many new rows to hoe.

I wonder how many of us do?

That would be interesting to know...in my case, I learned that looking back in business or in life leads to alot of lost time (sometimes regret) so I only focus on now and immediate future.

Depends on the extension if its .info ,easy but .org takes a lot because I like it ,the ,Coms are very hard to drop.I just make up my mind, drop and move on but dont do that anymore but it hurts to see your name has been picked after by those who see value just like we pick names from drops and then sell .Patience and timing.

Which registrar is that?
fabulous.com but there are others

Very difficult since most of my domains I purchase are things that I'm interested in developing. If you let one go then what about the others in the same category.

WoW. You must have made her an expert. I can understand the hardship :xf.wink: you went through to teach her. Do you get any comparative :xf.wink: opinion too?

It can be frustrating especially when a name you dropped becomes more valuable.. I think i let ethly.com drop. and now eth seems to be a big thing. People on namepros told me it was worth renewing. I barely used the appraisal section now.. I have been selling names that people didn't see value in here. I have to trust my instinct and experience. Even if eth didnt become popular, i should have kept it for the reason i purchased it.. a pronounceable 5l... hanreg..

But it can be good too.. it forces you to reduce your portfolio to only the very best names.. and if you plan to buy names in the future.. have a plan to sell it in an auction here and get anything so you don't lose it for nothing. Your busing is losing money in that case.

It's a very tough decision for both newbies and professionals

I don't drop any names, but the registrars always take them away when I don't renew them. :xf.grin::xf.wink:

Eh i regret dropping some but i only drop the lower quality. Doesnt mean they dont get snapped up or sell after i drop them. I try and ignore it. But i hold my premiums at all costs.

I've been developing, buying, and selling for a while now.

If I don't have a 5 figure+ vision for a domain then I will be dropping it.

Also, if I am dropping a domain with clear end users I have unsuccessfully shopped it around to everyone humanly possible and am ready to move on.

It's really easy for me as of now, I just try to register as many as domain I can for $0.48 to $3.99 promo, didn't even registered a single name for $6 or above.

Then I sell one or 2 for above $15 to $500 (sold one for $588 at Godaddy registered at $0.88 .co promo).

U are done, now you can offer remaining name for free before it drop.

Personally, it is easier for me to drop the names I bought as a newbie because most were crap. The hardest ones to drop are the ones I bought after I gained a little experience.

If you put it on auction and no bidders and feel you gave it your best shot drop it. If time just caught up on you question yourself will another 365 days help to find a buyer for this domain. I hate dropping some names but it can also be a good thing. If you have similar, more relevant shorter names that your keeping.
I have a few aged crap names developed that generate traffic so keep some alive due to back links. If it doesn't sound great and no content it probably isn't worth renewing. Names deemed worthless can still sell for thousands. If gut feeling is still with it keep on with the bet.

It is hard to drop a name but I learnt something,if name has potential to be used by a company operating on a long tail then I would give it some years.Got a $2k offer yesterday for one of the names I registered 2016 after gaining a little experience reading an reading(I buy mostly from auctions and hand reg is only when I have spent weeks researching).Domaining is sweet when it begins to pay off, patience plays a big role if you can have it because its needed if you can wait for when the buyer knocks on your door.I learnt a lot from great people here and the words they gave me and ideas on how to wait if i really want those good sales and never to be afraid to counter. If a buyer wants your name badly ,they would keep negotiating except when negotiation fails. Its so hard to see a name you dropped picked up buy a seller who then goes on to wait and make that sale.Focusing more on names that has potential with end users and lots of uses.

2nd year renewal: 98%
3rd year renewal: 90%
4th year renewal: 70%

It's easier for me to pay the renewal the 1st or 2nd time for the 2nd and 3rd year, but come the the 4th year I start squinting a little more at that renewal payment and scratching my head on about 1/3 of them wondering WHAT WAS I THINKING 3 YEARS AGO! So I tend to get more aggressive at that point in my drops. Plus after 3 years of throwing good money after bad I have a better handle on what actually sells and what doesn't. I've gotten more picky with my buys now.
