Verizon And Ericsson Tease 5G Future With Virtual Reality Indy 500 Demo
Takuma Sato became the first Japanese winner of the Indianapolis 500 on Monday. On the same track at Indianapolis Motor Speedway the previous week, there had been another uncommon sight with a driver operating a vehicle while wearing a pair of VR glasses while his windshield was blacked out.

Ericsson and Verizon demonstrated how a 5G network was capable of delivering high multi-gigabit bandwith and low latency with this test inside a moving car. The connectivity that came with 5G radios set up around the track and a 5G device inside the car succeeded in enabling the driver to go over 60 miles per hour as he surveyed the road ahead with the VR glasses.

Laughing as he was able to maneuver the vehicle safely on a race track while a mounted camera on the hood of the car provided the live VR and 4K 360-degree video feed to the glasses, the driver said, “This is so weird.”

5G uses beam tracking, which beams information at a specific user even if the user is moving at highway speed. The processing technology and advanced radio was provided by Ericsson. Broadband speeds of over 6.4 Gb/second were reached during the test.

With speeds up to 100 times faster than existing networks, everyone from Verizon IndyCar Series drivers to pit crews to fans can see the experience change with 5G. Streaming live data from sensors from cars and drivers can allow fans to virtually take the driver’s seat. Race teams can also get the real-time performance data faster.

“It’s exciting to have them test their new 5G wireless service during the Indianapolis 500,” Will Power, driver of the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Dallara/Chevrolet in the Verizon IndyCar Series, said in a statement. “Indianapolis is the birthplace of speed and innovation for INDYCAR racing, making it a fitting place to experience the increased speed of 5G technology on the eve of the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500.”

The demo came at a time when a 5G future isn’t far away. Verizon this year is set to deliver 5G pre-commercial services to select pilot customers in markets throughout the country on its network.

Per Narvinger, Head of Product Area Network Systems, Ericsson, said in a statement: “Ericsson is working with Verizon to push the 5G envelope and bring 5G to market with commercially ready networks. 5G will enable new use cases for people and businesses, which will make our world safer, more efficient and more environmentally sustainable.”

Ericsson leads 5G connected car gang towards pot of EU gold

Ericsson, the one-time mobe-maker, is leading a coalition tasked by the EU with building a 5G V2X network for connected cars.

The company said that its 14-strong consortium had won a place in phase two of the EU's 5G infrastructure public private partnership (5GPPP), which was set up primarily to speed up the implementation of 5G networks across the bloc's 28 member states.

Franck Bouetard, head of Ericsson France, said in a canned statement: "The European funding granted to our 5GCAR project is a major step, as it will allow our initiative to further develop in order to meet the market needs by 2020."....

5G will cover 15pc of world population by 2022, Ericsson predicts

Ericsson’s latest report suggests that significant developments are afoot on the road to 5G.

About 2.6bn subscribers are to be added to mobile broadband networks over the next six years, Ericsson predicts.

That’s according to the latest edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report, which names 4G technology LTE (Long-Term Evolution) as the most pervasive technology in history.

‘We anticipate that this will lead to more than half a billion 5G subscriptions and a [global] population coverage of 15pc by 2022’
– NIKLAS HEUVELDOP

The 2.6bn subscribers is the equivalent of filling a European championship soccer stadium, with a capacity for 50,000, 20 times each day in the next six years.

The report also revealed that in 2018, LTE will overtake GSM as the largest access technology by number of subscriptions.

Crown Castle's Lightower Acquisition Fuels Cell-Tower Expansion

Crown Castle International (CCI) shares fell Wednesday, following the formal announcement that it would acquire Lightower Fiber Networks for about $7.1 billion in cash.

Crown Castle also released second-quarter results before the market open.

The deal to buy Lightower provides Crown Castle the ability to expand its cellular services in highly populated urban areas in Northeastern metro markets, including Boston, New York and Philadelphia, the company said. It also will help provide 5G wireless infrastructure to customers such as Verizon Communications (VZ) and AT&T (T).

The deal originally was reported Monday, and some analysts said the deal is pricey. Crown Castle also announced a public offering of $3.25 billion worth of common shares, and $1.5 billion worth of convertible preferred stock.

Crown Castle stock fell 2.1% to close at 98.66 on the stock market today.

Crown Castle is a real estate investment trust that owns, operates and leases a network of wireless communication towers in the U.S., with about 40,000 towers. With the Lightower acquisition, Crown Castle will expand the miles of fiber it controls to 60,000, from 32,000. Lightower is privately owned by Pamlico Capital, Berkshire Partners and other investors.

IBD'S TAKE: Crown Castle stock is down 7% since reports first surfaced that it had bid for Lightower. Crown Castle sports a weak IBD Composite Rating of 56 of a possible 99. Check out the IBD 50 for a list of top performing stocks.

When the deal closes, Crown Castle said it plans to increase its common stock dividend to between 15 cents and 20 cents per share.

Early Wednesday, Crown Castle also said Q2 revenue was $1.038 billion, up 8% from the year-ago quarter and ahead of the Zacks consensus estimate of $1.036 billion. It reported adjusted earnings of 31 cents a share, up 41%.

EU signs declaration on 5G leadership at Estonia summit
20 July 2017 | James Pearce
5G Breaking News

http://www.capacitymedia.com/Articl...eclaration-on-5G-leadership-at-Estonia-summit

The European Union has signed a declaration that will see member states combine resources in order to facilitate the deployment of 5G services across the continent.

Member states gather in Tallinn, Estonia, to establish a common baseline for 5G standards in Europe, as the EU looks to position the region as a leader in mobile technology. All member states agreed an eight-point plan including steps to make spectrum available in a “timely and predictable manner” and provide “a predictable and legal framework for the granting and renewal of spectrum usage rights”.

“Everybody and everything will be using 5G networks to communicate in the future, and I am very glad that we managed to sign the declaration,” said Urve Palo, Estonian minister for entrepreneurship and IT.

“This indicates that all member states are thinking about the future and are willing to boost connectivity and Europe’s digital competitiveness to the next level. 5G will allow faster internet connections across Europe and make it possible to develop new technologies, such as connected cars, innovative industrial machines and e-health initiatives.”

It is estimated that by 2020 there will be 26 billion connected devices and 70% of people will own a smartphone. 5G will form the backbone of the EU digital single market industries of the future, modern public services and innovative applications such as connected cars, smart homes and mobile health services.

The declaration sets out a number of steps for member states to take in order to facilitate a fast roll-out of 5G and related services, following warnings from the industry that Europe was at risk of falling behind.

Notably, the declaration was signed by all 28 member states, including the UK, which is currently negotiating its exit from the Union following a referendum last year. Norway also signed up.

It comes as TIM (Telecom Italia) revealed plans to make San Marino into Europe’s first 5G country by launching the technology there in 2018.

LightPointe deploys 60 GHz point-to-point radios
BY GULLI ARNASON IN MEDIA AND TECHNOLOGY · JULY 19, 2017

LightPointe, a manufacturer of millimeter wave point-to-point radios and laser bridges, has deployed its gigabit capacity AireLink 60 radios for a major manufacturer in the building components industry, Panel Specialists, Inc, the company said.

Panel Specialists has multiple buildings which needed connection to its Local Area Network. The company has installed both upper millimeter wave and laser technology wireless bridges, and has repeatedly turned to LightPointe, a San Diego-based manufacturer.

Enterprises, telecom carriers, and government agencies install wireless bridges to avoid trenching for fiber, or avoid never-ending leased line fees. Today´s wireless bridges are extremely secure and can provide better data security than public networks, which helps avoid cybersecurity threats.

LightPointe manufactures wireless gigabit capacity bridges for enterprises and 4G / 5G LTE. The company is also a provider of Ultra Low Latency (ULL) wireless bridges for High Frequency Trading (HFT) networks.
