OdinsGreenBeard.com - Landing Page Example - Multiple Conversion Options

Not really looking for an appraisal since I'll probably be keeping this domain. However, If you want to provide a review and feedback, I'm always receptive to different ways I can better something without it getting too complicated. Especially since I have to consider that some domain enthusiasts that will use a page like this may have very limited skills/requirements to develop it themselves. So I wanted to keep it simple.

I've been asked a lot over the years about different ways to monetize domains/websites and tomorrow I'll be rolling out an article to cover that (Stay tuned). However, before I roll that article I wanted to put together a working example of a domain landing page that has multiple conversion options/revenue streams to reference in the article tomorrow.

The domain I used was actually going to be developed for my stepson however, the project got put on the back-burner and never came to fruition. Rather than let the domain sit doing nothing or drop it, I decided to develop it to use as a landing page example for those that keep asking about a good landing page strategy for domains.

If you're interested in reviewing my domain landing page strategy/concept that converts on multiple levels, here you go: www.OdinsGreenBeard.com

@Eric Lyon Nice page. What kind of hosting is required for such a page? I'm always reluctant to do this because I'm a little worried about the hosting costs if I would do several pages. Do you have any hosting providers in mind?

I've been with Godaddy since 2005 and use their shared hosting plans for small mini-sites and landing pages since they offer Unlimited domains/websites to be hosted with their deluxe shared plan. My rate might be grandfathered, but it's usually only $7 to $10 per month. For unlimited domains/websites to be hosted, it's worth it to me. You can more than likely get a discount paying by the year instead of by the month.

Eric, I didn't know that there was such an option for unlimited domains. Will check it - maybe I will give it a try because I'm thinking about it for quite a time now. Many thanks!(y)

As you can see in the screenshot below of Godaddy's shared hosting plans, they currently have a special on deluxe and I outlined where it stated "Unlimited Websites", which allows you to develop a landing page for every domain in your postfolio and host it on the same plan.

I hope that helps,

Thanks! And, Exactly! Unique content from a creative writer that does articles/blogs/guest posts is ideal for this type of landing page. Any bloggers/writers that also have domains just sitting around not making them any money could probably implement something like this fairly easily.

Providing visitors with quality educational content that sets the mood and makes the page "Sticky" in the sense that they share it or bookmark it. Which just brings more exposure to the domain and a slew of potential buyers that may not have searched for or visited the page otherwise.

Those referals generating more visitors is a win for any other monetization options utilized on such a landing page as well. ;)

using you @Eric Lyon as motivation, i did a simple landing page for www.nexcure.com

imo...
Looks good, you may need more content in there (shoot for a minimum of 250+ more words) to keep google happy and your landing page indexed in search for keywords/phrases. You may also want to add a standard privacy policy to comply with Google adsense policy when using their ad serving system on the page.

Keep in mind that the Google bot calculates content vs keyword density, ad placement, etc. When there isn't much content and there is an ad above the cut (Before the content) they devalue the page slightly.

The concept of a revenue generating lander requires that it complies with search policies so that it avoids any penalties and gets listed in organic search for different keyword/phrase search queries (Increasing domain visibility and potential ad clicks organically).

thanks Eric for the tiz-zips!

it got a couple of $5 clicks at PC in the past, so just seeing if launching it may bring a few more visitors

look at > organicwinecompany.com

didn't put a "for sale" on it yet, but it has plenty of content and is indexed

imo...

Much better with content on that one.

Maybe add the following:
  • Privacy policy so your ads don't violate terms
  • Make Offer or Buy Now option/form
  • Offer one free incentive that converts (Maybe a free wine eBook to download) - You can probably find a lot of free ebooks that allow re-distribution as long as you don't remove their branding from the ebook. You can set-up an auto-responder email dedicated to that campaign so that it's fully automated. As soon as they submit the free download form, the auto-responder replies with the download link to the ebook and you just got an email lead for any future wine niche services/products/domains for sale etc.
Just my opinion.

Note: Free stuff tends to sometimes get referenced to friends and associates, which just increases visibility and PPC revenue potential.

Another Note: On a lander, Never say "This domain IS for sale", instead, say something like "This domain MIGHT be for sale". Such a statement of "Might" coupled with your content, provides you with a better case of protection in the event of a UDRP filing since you have established a premeditated business plan that just hasn't come to fruition yet.

There probably isn't much concern for that with generic phrased domains, however, for those dealing with typos and other questionable domains that might infringe a TM, it's a good idea to word things on a landing page that help protect you (Just in case). A clear direction/potential business model that is in a verticle or completely different target market than another brand (That has a similar name) with a similar TM is just a good preventative measure, IMO.

@Eric Lyon great idea having multiple options on the page. I think I will incorporate these into my lander.

Creating a website for each domain can get bit unruly when you have 100's or 1000s of domains to setup and maintain.

I actually created a lander for all my 1,600+ domains this week. I decided to forward with masking all my domains on godaddy to the single lander page on my corporate site. This page detects the referral hostname when visitor lands on the page, which I then use to do a lookup to my database for any BIN pricing, other options, etc and then render the content. I coded this in C# .NET MVC, probably wouldn't be too difficult to do this in a WP page or in pure html with javascript.

Couple gotchas when adding forwarding with masking in godaddy. I actually had to add forwarding to the domains first, and then go back and add forwarding with masking option after the forwarding was applied. Also, I think you can only do 250 domains at a time. Not too bad thou.

I'm thinking of using a Name Server instead of forwarding. This is what the big boys do.

Also, my corporate site has google analytics, so I'm able to see referal traffic sources in realtime as users hit the lander.

Excellent! Sounds like you're ahead of the game.

Testing mini-sites / landers / splash-pages since 2005, I found that every visitor is slightly different when it comes to psychological action triggers and engagement. So I decided to combine a few different conversion strategies that target different psychological triggers. That way, I lose less leads that slip through the cracks.

As you said, it may not be feasable to do custom landers for 1k+ domains in a portfolio, however, one can at least start with small batches for testing and expand from there with what they find works best for them. Ideally, they would use the conversion profits to reinvest into developing out the rest of the portfolio with landers gradually.

Make offer purchase option (Lead catcher) + 2 graphic banner ads + 2 or 3 inline contextual link ads + A free download w/auto-responding email download link (Lead catcher) + A service option seems to work the best for me when it comes to landers. I don't always use a free download, but with the influx of freebie driven engagement online, it makes perfect sense to catch leads that way for a targeted niche.

Hi Michael, seems to be a well oiled machine :xf.smile:. I'm interested to see this. Could you please send a link to your lander.

I like it very much - good job! (y) Do you think that you have better conversion rate with your lander in comparison to other landers?

Plan to do some A/B testing to tweak conversion rate. Currently displaying Afternic phone number on most of the names, however, do have the ability to switch it to our phone by updating the DB.

Nice thing about google analytics, I can see in real time when users are hitting (and returning) to a domain, and switch it to our contact info to close if contacted.
