I had an expired domain pulled back from me, so to speak. They had 2 more days to renew, and decided to renew today. This was not an enjoyable experience. I was excited for eemploy.com, but I guess it wasn't meant to be. Eh . . .

Not saying this is what happened, but don't make public the name that you are buying from expired auction before it hits your account.

In theory, someone might have liked the name and contacted the owner offering redemption fee plus small amount above.

Small chance, but worth waiting few days.

Exactly. This has been reported here as well.

It is not yours until it is in your account.

Well, all you can do is not bid on that venue. Thats what I have done, and post about you experience. When enough people complain, it might change. As I have stated, some of these "auction" places make up their own rules and are totally non compliant with internationally recognized auction processes and rules. These digital assets are treated differently, and the irony is it is counter productive to their own profit business model.

Namepros here does a great job in policing the auctions and enforcing common sense and standard auction rules. There are no clawbacks here. I am proud to be part of a community here where they understand and enforce rules.
@Eric Lyon @Amanda @Cyberian and others behind the scenes do a great job! They tirelessly watch all the listings to ensure quality, complete details on listings, etc.

In an attempt to apply what I have learned . . .

Let's say there is a legtimate business up and running now. Lets say it is a funeral home business. How about MainStreetFunerals, and their website is MainStreetFuneralsGa.com. They are a funeral parlor in Georgia. They may or may not be on MainStreet. In fact lets say they aren't on MainStreet, but that is a part of their name. Would you purchase MainStreetFunerals.com with the intent to sell to them? Or is that too narrow, not enough end users?

This was just an example!

Purchase with a variety of end users in mind ,that you have researched ,one end user can be a problem ,if they say no to your offer, some domain or website owner sometimes do not understand the benefits of a good domain ,keep various options open

One end user very often could be not enough.

Let's say each end user is 20% chance to sell at around $1000. If you have 4 end users, you have 1-0.8^4=1-0.41=59% chance of sale happening.

With 1 it is still 20%. Might still be worth buying, if you believe in 20%, as if you do it across 20 domains, you'll sell 4 and those will payoff the cost of 20...

More than half of the expired names auctions I bid on get renewed. It's a feature of that type of auction.
