I read an interesting article on The Domains asking the readers who they thought was the greatest domainer of all time. Why was it interesting? Because it didn’t ask the most important question, “By what measure?”

For instance, are we measuring someone’s success by the amount of money they earn or amount of profit? Whether they have built a sustainable business or sold one off high value domains? How about whether they actually give anything back to the industry versus take, take and then take some more? Or, how about how they treat others that may not be as monetarily successful as they are?

Can a person be regarded as “the greatest” if their personal life is a complete mess? They may have even sold a lot of high value domains and yet not have much to show for it after multiple family failures.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
We're not measuring one's net worth here, chickenfillet. If that were the case, both Berkens and Schilling would be higher up, as far as I know.

It's more about how much a particular person influenced several generations of domain investors. Attending TRAFFIC 2008 was an eye-opener for me.

Ok, but I still don't see how Rick influenced domain investors, apart from boast that he is 'The Domain King' and infuriate other domainers.

I bet that on his grave stone, it will say 'The Domain King'. What an accomplishment...

I think there are many other people who would be a 'Greater' domainer, in terms of being more selfless than selfish, by actually letting people BUY his domain names without paying an arm and a leg.

Just read about the eBid.net issue, how Rick didn't want to sell eBid.com to the owner of eBid.net, and even had a website on eBid.com explaining how eBid.com was SUPERIOR to eBid.net, that he only wanted to RENT out eBid.com for $50,000 a year, I think? He didn't want to sell it lol, only rent. Something like that.

I'm not kidding, Rick seriously showed his true colors in his arrogance, pride and lack of self-control on that web page of eBid.com.

He took down that page, but oh my goodness, he is the lowest of the low domainer in my opinion. No one should be that rude and arrogant just because he owns the .COM of a SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS ON A .NET DOMAIN.

Don't believe me? Ask the owner of eBid.net to explain the story to you...

The royal title is arbitrary, but the value is there.

Regarding positive influence by
@Rick Schwartz I've shared some tidbits at my blog over the years, including the "power of no" and how to stick to one's gut senses when offers arrive.

Rick's 10 year tenure as a founder and operator of TRAFFIC brought together the full spectrum of domain investors, from small fish to large fish. And whether he chooses at times to "rant" via Twitter, that's his way of being extrovert about his positions on investments and other wisdom accumulated over the course of two decades.

For me it is me because I am just like everyone else the self centered guy who thinks "everything revolves around me and I can control those things"

For others I don't have a clue as I am too much self centered :(

Muhammad Ali, is the Greatest of All Time!

and you can't go around handing out that acclamation to anybody else-

at least, until they've done and or have been thru and walked in, the same type of shoes, as he did.

That's..... why he is, The Greatest of All Time.

ya heard

:)

still.... there are some who have done good things for so long, in that, what they've accomplished can be seen as "great"
as in providing a great place to do business and or discuss the business, in an environment that's "conducive". or if you've just been following the achievements of a select few with admiration, that, on it's own... may seem great to you.

imo.....
Greatest Draft Dodger that is

Regarding to this thread which is called ''WHO IS THE GREATEST DOMAINER OF ALL TIME?'', it must be the WHOIS which counts as the main criteria.

Therefore it is the WHOIS which makes it OFFICIAL, yes.

So until the WHOIS won't change, I am
THE GREATEST DOMAINER OF ALL TIME
and probablyyy the first domaining xillionnaire one dayyy

Thanks - of course I wish the same to you and to everyyy other one who would deserve it.
But without THE MOST EXPENSIVE DOMAIN OF ALL TIME it will be difficult to make such an enormous amount of moneyyy

BTʬʬʬ I am 100 % sure, that Bob Parsons and / or Rick Schwartz and / or Frank Schilling and / or an other domaining giant will contact me sooner or later at a certain point of time to get into negotiations with me.

Stayyy tuned!!!

I guess "The Greatest" Domainer is subjective and all the good domainers in the OP list are all great in their own way.

I do know who the most generous domainers are though. It's all of you on NP and beyond who slog their behind off, making a ton of money for the registries and registrars, the vital cog in the domaining wheel to keep things moving forward, with just the occasional sale/s to keep you happy!

To me there is no domaining without you folks!:xf.smile:

A question which could be answered in manyyy ways - and also through a domain.

What I can sayyy for sure, is, that whoever is the greatest domainer of all time, will get the domains

thegreatestdomainerofalltime.top

THE GREATEST DOMAINER OF ALL TIME

thegreatestdomainerofalltime.com
THE GREATEST DOMAINER OF ALL TIME

from me - if I am willing to sell them.
Currently (and since I registered them last year) I use them as forwarders, seems that I am the greatest domainer of all time.
I was about to nominate you here. That was my 1st thought after reading the title.

I was asking the question, "What does greatest mean?" For me, greatness is more about character than the size of a person's wallet.....for others, this may be different.

I agree and also it should be more specific in regards to what measures as you mentioned. We can say Frank and all the guys that were involved from the beginning of the industry are up there in greatness but at the same time they had the advantage of being involved in the beginning.

It is tough to define the greatest as there are many successful domainers in the industry, some are well known while others are killing it behind the scenes.
