So, I've been looking at the auctions, and I bid $1 on a name that had been valued at $32,000 ( buy it now price ), and it had about a month to go before the auction closed. A few days later someone bid $2 for the name. I continued watching it, and the next bid was $3. It sat at $3 for several days. I was off the net for an hour or so whilst I drove to Portsmouth, and during that time the BIN price dropped to $50, and someone has bought it.

Don't you just hate it when someone pulls the rug out from under you. :)

Sounds like NameSilo’s expired domain marketplace.

Seen a few of those $32,000 domains in the last month, only reason they start off as that is age, some of them wasn’t even registered in other extensions.

Dog eat dog world though, snooze you lose.

It was NS.

I wish I had been snoozing. I'd been to the supermarket, and then I took some stuff to a wholesale buyer. After that I went to McD for a coffee and a blast on the WiFi. That's when I discovered that I'd missed the name. I'm still here messing around with the VPS that I've just rented.

Keep in mind that the original owner can renew or transfer for the next 5 days so it's not actually won yet.

The $50 bidder might still get the rug pulled out from under him as well : wink :

It will get renewed.. I 'won' dozens there, good domains always get renewed at these expired auctions.

Greenpak.com is good example. Was renewed couple hours before deadline

I'm currently sitting on two that close in 9 minutes. One is a dictionary word, and one is a mis-spelling that is the name of a butcher in the next county. They are both at $1/

Update - I picked up both of those names. I don't like the idea of outbound selling, but I might write to the butcher. The only problem is that the .co.uk is available for registration.

Same experience here, bidding on their expired auctions is mostly a vaste of time. Wish they would use the name.com expiring auctions model instead.

It looks as if I messed up on the possible outbound sale. It might be toxic. The name is banable.com, and when I went to check the sales page I had set up on NS, it threw up a porn site. The DNS hadn't updated, but it's resolving correctly now. It looks as if the name had been reg'd as a typo for bangable, and had been dropped because it wasn't paying its way.

Serves me right for bidding on a name whilst lying on my back in the dark in a van in a car park. I didn't do any of the usual research. I didn't even check the site to get the porn pages, they came up whilst I was having a coffee in the entrance to a busy supermarket.

I'd be surprised if my $1 bid would influence anyone into renewing. Would I pay $1 to the current registrant? Probably not, as he would probably want PayPal, and it's easier to take the money out of my NS account.

Since they started the email updates, I saved all old watchlist emails and someday might do a breakdown of percentages of domains that get sold. Yet my numbers would be skewed by the domains I was watching.

Agree @Haris @MasterOfMyDomains @Arca - In general I give very little effort to bothering to bid there anymore, yet don't we all do the same when we are the current owner? : wink :

I've never done this. Domains don't resolve after they have expired, so you are going to lose 100% of type in leads during the period you are "teasing" other domainers with your expired name. I renew every domain I'm going to keep before it expires. These domainers letting their names expire for 25 days just to renew them lose out on 25 days of type-in leads. They are losing real end-user sales while doing this.

I just see no benefit to letting names I'm going keep expire and then renew after 25 days just to tease some domainer who thought s/he could get them. I'd rather renew so that the landing page will keep working, because that's crucial when a prospective buyer types in the name. If the domain doesn't resolve, they will not find out that the domain is for sale, which leads them to move on to look for other options instead.

@Kuffy - was it s e a p a g e s? That one actually got sold to the $50 bidder. There was a $50 snipe on a 4L that renewed the last day, cannot recall if there was ever a $50 4L snipe that was won, maybe once quite a while ago.

OK found two, there are very few that get to the $50 max bid anyway

@Arca - my single renew after bids was a domain with a $1 bid and my purpose was to test nSilo to see if it could be done. It encountered problems that required me to harp on support to fix so it was a learning process for me to share my experience with others. My guess would be no big loss for the $1 bidder, plus it has a make offer sales page if they really want it : smile :

I've bid on domains on there a few times and it they got renewed. It doesn't annoy me, as i don't pin all my hopes on winning when i bid, i just bid and then forget about it as it's not mine at the end of the day until that 25 day period.

Only thing i don't understand is why people leave it until last day if you have plans on renewing, you could easy take ill that final day and end up in hospital or have some other unforeseen personal problem in your life yet because you was playing silly arse leaving it until the final day, lost a great domain.

@usernamesx - yes it was seapages. I wasn't sure why they put $32,000 on the name. I'm not too stressed about it though, as I picked up another couple of sea names - seaelite.com and seaspectrum.com I paid $1 for one of them, and picked the other off a drop list.

I've got $50 on sensitised.com which transfers in a couple of days if it isn't renewed. I thought I could use that to sell skin care products, but now that I've posted this, it will probably be renewed. :)

Aged domains get higher max - seapages is a 1996 domain, although the 32K max is a bit extreme. [edit: year 1997 and later is max $1600] You can figure out the patterns for pricing if you fool around with the settings while searching the marketplace. It was good about a year ago so I used to know the system better, too much effort now for the low return. I get low hanging fruit maybe once every month or two at the $1-5 level.

My attitude has adjusted like @KingslayerVR - don't expect to win to reduce disappointment : smile :

Exactly, that model works better, I have lost many names waiting for $15.99 when someone else paid $39.99 or $19.99. It makes you think about the names more and you make moves earlier than you normally would have sometimes. And you know you get the name.

Among the smaller registrars (dynadot, name, namesilo) that run in-house expired auctions, name.com definitely has the best expired auction system. DynaDot made some changes to address this, as they acknowledged that most auction won names were renewed (they didn't mention names, but a large portion of these names were renewed by the infamous Jason Newby...). Things are certainly better at DD after these changes, but a lot of won names are still renewed. Name.com is great, because you don't waste any time following and bidding on names, only to have them be renewed by the owner. Once you buy the name, it's yours. Other marketplaces should move to the same model imo.

However, since name.com's names are now sent through namejet first, they hardly have any quality expired inventory available anymore. The good stuff gets picked up at namejet, and there isn't much worth picking up among the leftovers that are then sent through name.

Well today is a bad day. I haven't found one name that I liked. Maybe that's a good sign, and it shows I'm getting more selective. :)

Thank you for this - there hasn't been much of anything good for a while and I didn't think to ask why. Too bad, the actual purchase/instant gratification model is super.

Thanks as well for the info, I always wondered why their inventory was low par but saying that its a good system. Dynadot is hit and miss and Namesilo is a joke when it comes to people renewing at the last minute.

The problem with Dynadot and Namesilo is if you use Paypal to pay for expired auctions and they get renewed, you're kind of stuck with a (sometimes) large account balance that you can't use and can't send back to your Paypal account

@Kuffy - Congrats! You got one! The auction has been won so the sale has ended.

Which one was that? I've picked up a dozen or so in the last week. If I remember correctly, WiseAccountant.com came from an auction. I need to cut back on buying though, and do a bit more selling and developing, I put a bid on DNroute.com to use as a surfer traffic redirection site, but I subsequently picked up DNsend.com from a drop list, and I started to use that for my VPS. I've now got DNroute which I don't need any more. It looks as if it might be a reasonable name though, as it can be used for a lot more than internet traffic movement.

Ah yes. That was a bit high priced for me. :)

It's one I want to keep and monetise. Most of the search results are for sensitive in relation to skin care products, and that is not the same thing. With the increasing use of toxic chemicals and bad diet, I think sensitised could be a useful earner. That assumes that I move my euphemism, and do some work. :)
