Some years ago there was a restriction that names had to have at least 5 days of life left if they were being transferred between registrars. I've just initiated a transfer to Name Silo, and the name only had a couple of hours before expiry. It is now pending with the registry, so I assume it is going through correctly.

Have they changed to time limits on transferring names close to expiry?
If the rules have changed, is it now possible to transfer an expired name to a different registrar?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
This entirely depends on the losing and gaining Registrars. There are a huge number of Registrars that allow transfer AFTER expiry, and the limits are also per Registrar

The official ICANN rule is that expiration is not a valid reason for denying transfer, however they CAN legally charge a transfer out fee, must be clearly stated. Also there are caveats if you have privacy ON before the domain expires and/or before initiating transfer. I have successfully done transfers at day 39 after expiry and others have really pushed the limits up until around day 42-43, and again you have to know the exact rules for each losing registrar and if they participate in expiring auctions, since that can affect your maximum time if it gets sold sooner than the max deadline.

For your specific case who is your losing registrar?

The losing registrar is OnLineNIC. It must be 10 years or so since it transferred a name with less than a month of life. I guess I should read the small print, although I'm an inertia registrant. I tend to have a preferred registrar, and it takes quite a bit to shift me once I've moved a couple of hundred names.

At the moment I'm using OLN, NameSilo and GoDaddy. I've also got a few xyz names registered through WSWD hosting ( they are a special case ).

Unfortunately, they are very ambiguous in their terms, so you are better off to not push your luck
https://www.onlinenic.com/Policies/OnlineNIC-Domain-Registration-Agreement.htm

4. After Expiration of The Term of Domain Name Registration.
You agree that we may, but are not obligated to, allow you to renew your domain name after its expiration date has passed. After expiration of the term of a domain name registration services and before deletion of the domain name in the applicable registry's database, you acknowledge that we may direct the domain name to name-servers and IP address(es) designated by us, including, without limitation, to no IP address or to IP address(es) which host a parking page or a commercial search engine that may display advertisements, and you acknowledge that we may either leave your WHOIS information intact or that we may change the contact information in the WHOIS output for the expired domain name so that you are no longer the listed registrant of the expired domain name.

After expiration of the term of domain name registration services, you acknowledge that certain registry administrators may provide procedures or grace periods during which expired domain name registrations may be renewed. You acknowledge that you assume all risks and all consequences if you wait until close to or after the end of a domain name registration term to attempt to renew the registration. You acknowledge that we, for any reason and in our sole discretion, may choose not to participate in a post-expiration renewal of a domain name and that we shall not be liable therefore. You acknowledge that post-expiration renewal or redemption processes, if any, involve additional fees which we and your Primary Service Provider may determine. You acknowledge and agree that expired domain name(s) may be made available to be registered or re-registered to any party at any time.

OnlineNIC is one of the few places I don't have an account

Most likely you will be fine since you initiated the transfer before the actual expiry, since you have you already approved all transfer emails it should complete on it's own with no issues. You can be proactive if you would like and ask OnlineNIC support to Fast/Force transfer out approval, they might be able to even though there isn't any info I could find for them about it.

Go Daddy has clear rules for after expiry, you will have until day 42-43ish, can be influenced if your domain is not sold in expired/closeouts and you must NOT have privacy enabled before expiration. There's whole threads on it, if you can't find them, lemme know

NameSilo you have until day 31-33 after expiry and you can see if on the last possible day if anyone buys your domain when the price drops to a dollar, you will have less than 22 hours to transfer out quick before they award the domain to the buyer. And yes, I have done this : grin : If the buyer does it close to deadline you could have zero time, so again, I wouldn't push it.

Both GoDaddy and NameSilo have fast/force transfer out approval that you can trigger in the control panel.

Also the new ICANN change of owner 60 day lock can seriously gum things up if you make any changes to contact info and not NOT opt-out of the lock - some registrars do not provide an opt-out option, or you have to appeal to them to lift it manually.

Specifically at GoDaddy, if you do an internal domain push and the emails changed and Go Daddy locked the domain, you have to appeal to get the lock lifted before the transfer out.

Lemme know if I was unclear anywhere, and recheck all at the source Registrars since these things can be confusing and changes happen. Luckily for GD and nSilo we have reps here if needed.

You'll have to check OLN and WSWD yourself for any gotchas.

what about domain.com ,dotster and netfirms. what their rule on transfer out. any idea please?

WSWD is a special situation, so I'm not too bothered about them. I have a good relationship with the owners, and they are a really helpful company.

The name is blackpvc.com - which is an old porn name of mine. I plan to keep it, and I'll probably use if for promoting car skins or something like that. I'll let the transfer run, and see what happens. If there are any probs, then I'll let you know.

The $1 Name Silo auctions are interesting. I lost a couple of names I wanted because they were renewed. I lost another one because I held off for the last hour, and somebody beat me too it.

It's fun trying to catch names as the coconut drops, but there seem to be a lot of monkeys out there with big baskets doing the same thing. :)

The earliest is 29 days, if someone picks up your domain in closeout. If not, then you have until day 40ish, but there is no way to tell beforehand.

Friendly Heads up for everyone. It appears the DomFam is participating in expired auctions and it is possible you can lose your domain if you do not renew by day 29 AFTER expiry.
Renew on time - you'll be fine : grin :

https://www.domain.com/domains/faq - there is much more - below is just a snippet
Q. What happens if I don't renew my domains?
As early as 30 day after expiration, your domain name may be purchased by a third party. If a third party purchases the domain name during this time, the domain name will not be available for you to renew.

I think the moral here is - do whatever you are going to do at least 7 days before the name expires.

The Grace Periods were meant to benefit lay people not domainers, so in a real emergency type situation, 30ish days is pretty fair for most people.

For domainers, mostly it seems to be an organizational or overwhelm issue, or a lack of funding issue, so it's good to at least have a little bit of a safety net.

Your specific domain does not appear to have been updated yet - you should be able to get an idea of the status using refreshed whois

That domain makes me think of plumbing so most likely ignorance is bliss if you consider it a p0rn name : innocent :

Pending at Registry
Your transfer request is pending at the central registry. The registrar you are transferring away from has 5 days to cancel the request, or else it will proceed. Some registrars allow expediting outbound transfers by manually approving the transfer request from within your account. You may try logging into your account at the registrar you are leaving, or asking them if this is an option for you.
Your current registrar has until 2017-07-24 12:00:29 to reject the transfer. If they do not reject the transfer, it will complete within 48 hours of this date and time. There is unfortunately nothing we can do to expedite this process. You can read more concerning the timing of transfer completions by clicking the Help icon on the top of this page.

It seems pvc car wraps are the thing at the moment - here is a snakeskin one. I thought that if I posted the girl pics, I''d be in trouble - even though this is name pros. :)

Just as an experiment, I'm trying to transfer an expired name to see what happens. It had an old email addy in the details, so I've just changed that, and I've received the modification notice. No sign of the authorisation email though.

I've just approved the transfer.

Please let us know how that turns out.
Also, the losing and gaining reg house would be helpful as well.

Peace,

Expired transfers I have done:
Losing Registrar to Gaining Registrar
NameSilo, GoDaddy, PDR Resellers, Moniker to domfam - Domain/MyDomain/NetFirms/Dotster
domfam - Domain/MyDomain/NetFirms/Dotster to different DomFam sibling
GoDaddy, PDR Resellers to NameSilo
DomFam to AlpNames
there's probaly more : grin :
next up is Uniregistry to Epik in the next week or so

NameCheap and Dynadot have expired transfer out policies that technically appear to be against ICANN rules so I have never pushed my luck there. Likely I have a few at Dynadot I could experiment with.

The losing registrar has the most influence on how the process goes, so most of the time when there is a expired rescue emergency type thread, it because of an issue with the losing registrar having some transfer out gotchas.

Well BlackPVC.com transferred without any problems, and the expired name looks as if it is progressing well. I think there is another day to go, but no indication of any difficulties so far.
