Hi guys,

Are 5L .com domains still worth taking the chance on even if they don't make sense?
I've stumbled across a 5L .com where the first 4 letters spell a word leaving the fifth letter random.
What are your thoughts?

Gar.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Only if they are brandable and pronounceable

......I think this might be.
If a 5L .com spells a word in the first four and is pronounceable, what roughly would that possible be worth?

It completely depends on the word .. but if it's just a 4 letter word plus a random 5th letter .. then chances are the domain has little to no value.

ADDED: However .. if the 5th letter makes an invented but pronounceable new word then yes it could be good. Like Coiny for example.

5L do sell .. but there are a lot out there. In most cases none are real words. They need to be pronounceable and easy to say .. Liomo is one of mine that I would consider a good example.

Alternate spellings sometimes also work like Ahdio, Pykup, Qreem, Mapyl etc .. but it really depends on the original word.

Obviously 5L .coms like Kuffy.com are extremely valuable. :)

I'm not sure I like the 4 letter words followed by a non-related fifth. I did get interested in names like WORD4.com though.

Agreed, it has to be pronounceable, brandable etc in my opinion. There are exceptions, but just adding a random letter doesn't make a 4L great.

does it end in a vowel or consonant?

How strong of a word is it?

Is it from auction, buyer or is it still available to be registered?

The 4 letter word is a strong, brandable word. The fifth letter, albeit random has a phonetic empathy with the word but it's a tough one!
It was found purely by me playing around and finding it's not taken.
That fact that it's not taken is either a bad sign that nobody wants it or it's been missed.
It ends in a consonant and is a new registry.

hard to say without knowing

example

W o r d a - possible value because its pronounceable

W o r d d - possible value (like fiverr.com, digg.com, etc)

W o r d h - very little, to no value. To many random 5L at this point... could change in the future

......if I purchase it I'm going against all the advice to newbies given so far!!
Maybe I'll note it down and come back to it later.
As a newbie you immediately think "....if I don't bag it, someone else will."

Random 5L are a long shot.

IMO, brandable 5L are still acceptable options. Stuff like : Molia, Alteo, Banol, Kanti, Pocix.
Ideally a real word + a letter: BESTo, WINia, BIDio

It is a very clever thing to do.
Build a list of 1000+ names and when you find a $1-$2 promotion on registration, you jump in and register them all.

If it pronounceable,go for it. Limqa.com is my favorite 5L.

I you really think it's a good domain, depending on your financial situation, there really isn't any harm in registering it (JUST THE ONE ... lol) and asking for feedback. You might find the feedback alone more valuable than the domain.

There is almost no avoiding buying bad domains when you start. The key is to learn from the mistakes sooner than later and limit the damages! :)

Just ONE guys ... lol .. just ONE!

@Furquah .. be careful with those .. particularly the double letter .. I don't think you have very high chances of making a sale on those I'm sorry to say.

I have a formula for registering 5L.com. I break them into to two parts.

first part - nice acronym.
second part- CO, CL, CC, LTD or LLC
where,
CO - company
CL - company limited
LTD - limited company
etc.
This is only my theory, use at your own risk.

And don't forget to grab your copy of my just-launched Domain Portfolio Management script at DNHat.com

Happy domaining!

You didn't get what I was trying to tell you. I always be careful while choosing a domain name.
