I just read an article to today and I really don't have any idea how it is possible... I applaud these sales, but I just can't seem to get my brain around how these types of names are selling for this kind of money.

Congrats Mr. Mann!

Thats the thing mate, I get what you are saying but with any business model...monopoly or not, customers who buy massive volumes don't get standard pricing. He probably has more domains than some of the smaller registrars.

Also, when we crunch the numbers...even if we include the f$%# ton of sales he might be making at $350. if he sells 100 of those per month (which I doubt he does) thats only $35K per month... that still leaves him with another $$270k or so he needs to make just to cover renewals..again, not including tax, his own drawings, staff costs, utilities and other business expenses.
He owns around 400k domains so if I judge by his huge portfolio size he would be selling way more than 100 domains per month, probably he is selling around 300-500/month (if I compare by my portfolio it is over 1000/month but mostly the bigger the portfolio becomes the lesser it would become in quality). And probability of getting more than decent sale price on weak domains get higher due to the shear size of the portfolio and how professionally they are sold. From the name he chose for branding to the website operating on it and everything in-between exudes professionalism, genuineness and authority and that is more than enough to influence many buyers to spend more than what a name would fetch if it was owned by a part time domainer. Only negative thing I currently see is the email address DomainMarket.com is using, [email protected]

Congrats to Mike! He has been doing it for a long time and I believe a huge part of getting these types of incredible sales has to be the amount of buyers and relationships he has build over the years. He has to have some type of past buyer list that he can reach out to when he gets a new name. These are people who have shown the desire to buy domains.

This is something I am currently working doing as well, making sure when a sale is made I stay in touch with that person for even more future sale. Mike has been around so long he has to have a huge list like this as well as a big following.

You also have to keep in mind that it's not just Mike Mann selling those domains. He has a team working with him. So who knows how they grind to get this done.

Exactly. He and his people are researching. As random as the names appear, they are clearly not random. Its really awesome to see the results. Having the resources is key to achieving more.

Like they say, if you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go as a team.

He and his team have gone far.

More than anything it is a law of averages. If you own 400K decent domains, there will be outliers.
You only hear the stories about the ones that sell, not the 98% or 99% that don't.

Brad

The answer!

Plus the fact that his names often are better than it seems if you do a little research. I have done that and found out that these regs (by Mann) were not random at all!

Yeah, 2/3 mentioned in this thread aren't what I would call generic but company related names. Company product or the .com of a company on another ext, this case a .eu.

I just told that to a guy offering on one of my domains today! Believe it or not, I acquired a domain about a month ago for a great price. I put up an efty lander and got an offer right away. The offer was low, but the conversation started. I priced the domain high, and the buyer walked away. A few days later, they contact me to tell me they registered the same name but as a new gtld. My response was, I love it! I would love to see you build your business around a new gtld of my .com!

I couldn't believe they actually told me they registered an alternative. I told him (just today!) that the price of my .com will only increase and to grab it now. I feel this deal will be closed very soon. :)
Classic MM Move... Nice.

FYI on the "NearMe" domain he sold, its part of a local seo phenomenon. Basically "Near Me" searches have grown exponentially over the past 10 years. With things like "Restaurants Near Me" being searched millions of times per month. So owning the domain of such terms if they are significant i.e (100k+monthly searches) actually has value because the scary thing about this trend is the search volume is actually increasing YOY. Not many people have tapped into this niche so it was actually a very smart purchase and flip, some people may call it lucky, but there is no luck in that sale. He and his team knew exactly what they were doing and can distinguish value in places people don't normally look.

I own "Nail Salon Near Me" in .com, and to most peoples surprise it gets a Search Volume of 1,220,000/month. People may laugh at you and question your rationale but if you always have an edge it doesn't matter what they think.

Great sales.

Which sites offer backorder for $20?
No one that I could refer to. But Mike Mann ha not only $20 Domains in his portfolio. Another options are Godaddy expired domains and closeouts.

Could be that the buyer/broker was monitoring the domain for dns change. Once it changed they knew it was available and boom a nice sale for him.

Its the experience, its the know how. I would even say the life experience.

If you have been in this indrustry for as long as I have, you know it all. You know how things are done. How things should be done. How much someone is making etc.. Its not the education - it dosen`t hurt to get one, but its the life experinece. I don´t know how to describe it.

This are things you can`t get smoking weed all day and "trading" domains at your mom`s house. And get paranoid that maybe she is not makind diner for you today.

You have to know what domains to register, how to get most money out of them.

Thats the life, thats real life.

i don't now guys where you got that 400,000 number from... latest (July 10, 2017) onlinedomain.com article says DomainMarket has 288,836 domains for sale..

another thing to mention here is this excerpt from another onlinedomain.com article (Dec 2016):

>>>>>>>>>>>>>

First he said that the average premium domain sales price at Domain Market.com is now at $2,600. Average has doubled since last year.

That on itself doesn’t say much about sales volume but then he make comment that might have gone unnoticed.

He said “I did half that on my private little market” commenting on a post saying that Namejet sold $725k worth of domains in November 2016.

So he did about $362,500 is sales in November and $4.35 million in the past year. (of course all these numbers are all estimates and not exact or scientific)

If you divide $4.35 million by $2,600 then you get about 1,673 domains per year or 139 domains per month.

So Mike Mann’s portfolio annual turnaround is less than 1% at about 0.0067.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<

what does it mean for a small investor?

if you hold 1,000 domains and you are as good at picking/selling as Mr. Mann you can expect:

1,000 names x 0.0067 sell thru rate x $2,600 average price = $17,420

minus $9,000 in renewals
------------------------
~ $8,000 in profit

not bad at first sight
but is $650/month worth your time?

if your answer is NO and you want more you either have to have better names than Mr Mann or price your names higher than $2,600 :)

imo

PS. Average sales price is already $3541 as of July 2017 according to onlinedomain.com

that's Konstantinos @OnlineDomainCom estimations, not mine..

but i do think for bigger portfolios the rate tends to be lower than for for smaller ones

It could be, but I find it hard to belive, it would be that much lower. But yeah if he dosen´t give out numbers its only speculation

I have noticed that trend 'near me' even on Google map

I feel some people have great negotiation skill. Just because some sales to us sound unbelievable do not mean that they are not true. Few days back I read a story how a successful General Motors sales agent sold tons of cars to buyers. Buyers had to seek appointment in order to buy.
