Today, i've received an inquiry for one of my domain names from an edu e-mail address who claims that he's a student;

Hello,

I am a student and wanted to buy your domain name for a school project.

Are you willing to sell *******.com?

I have a relatively limited budget and understand if not.

Thanks,

*******

After a quick research, i've confirmed that he's really a student but the MBA one from Harvard Business School and currently working at Tesla on the department of Sales Operations and Insurance. : )

This is the second inquiry i got for the related name at this month, other one was a mobile company from Holland.

As i replied that, i've purchased it in order to develop a project and have registered trademark within two classes, but haven't started the project yet so, i may think to sell if i get any serious offer.

Name is not generic and/or keyword, it's just brandable of an English verb.

Not sure what will happen on this one, but just wanted to share because it's a bit tragicomic.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I had a similar enquiry from as student at MIT for one of my machine learning domain names which he wanted to use for a project (almost exactly same wording as yours!) it didn't result in a sale in the end as the offer was to low.

I get these often. None have ever resulted in a sale because I wont discount a domain down to $50 or $25 just because its a school project.

I usually ask them if they can get their school to fund the purchase, or if they can fund-raise to get the money, since many of these school projects end up becoming viable businesses. Facebook, among others, ring a bell? What we're selling them is an asset so even if they stop using the domain at the end of the project and never do anything else with it, they still own something they can resell. Thats my opinion.

I tell them to buy the .org, and I mean it.

Smart piece of advice ...then you hope they'll develop the .org into a billion dollar business and come after your .com :)

Isn't odd though how this advice never seems to be taken on board (at least in my experience), they all gravitate to .com for their personal/ non commercial project.

I get them all the time. I just say I price domains based on market value, not the usage or budget of a single potential buyer.

I may be wrong here, but why a student would need a .com domain for a project?

I've gotten a few of those too, couple of hundred at most as a sale.. @pinkdragon - more and more schools are teaching web development and programming and they actually do need a domain to go along with it.. I guess instead of a crappy name they would hand reg, they are trying to do some legwork and try to get a more decent name which looks better for their project and shows more seriousness imo

Just fix your price student or no student. The student could even be richer than the seller. Afterall they pay tuition in xxxx, xxxxx

facebook was a project ;)
Exactly. Project could run from thousands to millions of dollars. Pricing your domain cheaply could be a big mistake

...for some reason "students" tend to want your most valuable commercial/business domains
and mostly .coms

just an observation

wondering what kind of school projects they do nowadays..

A quick update: They replied to my e-mail and mentioned that they can pay $200 funded by school or pick another name, and i replied that i paid more than $200 for the trademark process, got another reply they're able to pay $400 totally by adding funds with his friend, and i had to say "no" cos' if i develop it, my revenue would be a lot than this offer.

so all of a sudden friend got involved into project. Tell them for 400, you can renew the domain for 40 years and keep it. Go find another domain

leasing it would be great reply and suggestion
make sure you say its actually not for sale and for lease only
to help him make up his mind

Why not Give them the choice?

Eg - you want $2m for the domain

So as they do not have that sort of dough etc you require 25% ownership of the website they build on your domain but give them. The option to buy the domain outright for $2m when whatever website they design on your domain becomes successful

With tech start ups starting virtually everywhere etc domain investors will sooner or later be selling domains to the next Facebook etc but they will think they got a bargain at 20,000% roi etc but effectively sell the domain too cheap because of the vision the tech entrepreneur they sell to has for that domain etc and goes on to build a multi billion dollar website on your domain etc
