So... I have a little tracker ( https://www.thetrackr.com ) on my keychain and the thing is really not reliable. It uses bluetooth to communicate and that in itself sucks, wireless would be much better.

So knowing this tracker is not overly reliable I made a sticker with my cell phone number and stuck it on the tracker key tag just in case I ever lose my keys.

Well it happened.... I lost my keys and the tracker was absolutely useless, it told me the last location was the grocery store and I knew that. My wife and I went shopping and she drove home instead of me so I did not realize I misplaced my keys.

Try as I may all I could see was the last location of my keys, then last night I get a phone call from some dick who said he found my keys and he wants $100 to return them to me. He was calling from a phone booth and told me to put the money under a rock at a specific location. He said once he has the money he will place the keys in the same location and we will both be happy.

What an underhanded son of a Bi%$h this guy must be >:(>:(>:(>:(

I don't really have much choice because the key electronic key fobs from both of my cars are on there and they would cost a small fortune to replace.

Why in gods name would he not just ask me for a reward for his time and effort instead of making me go through these insane shenanigans?

Anyways.... I said I need to go to the bank to get a $100 dollar bill and I will put it there after work today. I am inclined to go wait there to find out who the jerk is but he could be there at any time during the night and I can't stay up all night for 100 bucks.

Oh man...... I am just furious >:(>:(>:(>:(

OK - UPDATE

I have my keys!!! :xf.smile::xf.smile::xf.smile:

I went last night and put the money under the rock as instructed. I waited around for an hour and nobody came so I went home. Got a call just before 11pm asking where the money was. I freaked and thought I was being taken for a ride. Turns out I did not have the correct location. This time I was instructed to leave the money in a pop can. I went back (found my money) and had to go buy a damn pop (I don't drink this shit) and insert the $100 dollar bill.

Long story short.... I went back this morning and my keys were under the pop can squished between two rocks.

I am happy and relieved, but pissed off at the same time. I cannot say what I am annoyed at most, this idiot for making me go through this or trackr for putting out such a shity product.

I really need to find something that tracks keys with some kind of accuracy because this cloak and dagger shit just sucks.

Did you dust for fingerprints?

Seriously though, glad you recovered your keys and nothing escalated

This is awesome, what a story. Glad it worked out. Could have been a lot worse, especially being Toronto. Instead, we've got an intro, plotline and ending worthy of a Hollywood domainer movie script.

No but funny you asked.... I felt almost sick to even touch the keys so I put some spray nine on a rag and cleaned them up. The idea of this guy having even touched my keys creeped me out.

Almost forgot.....

Last night I dreamt about this whole convoluted situation, it caused me quite a lot of grief. Not so much the money but the way it all went down.

Anyways in the dream I went to recover my keys and there was only one car fob with a note asking me for another $100. When I drove down this morning I said to myself what if that is a premonition and would I give up another hundred dollars.

Fortunately though, my keys were there and the first thing I did was click on a clip to attach them to my belt.

Nope, it would have been much better if I caught the guy and beat the living daylights out of him. Then again this is Canada so I would probably have been charged with assault. It was probably better all around that I did not catch him.

At least he gave you the keys. He could have run away with the money and the key. There is a lot of bad stuff that could happen. But gladly it didn't. In the end..

I think you are full of crap anyways because payphones haven't been around for 5 years.
Not sure where you live but this pic was taken fifteen minutes ago
payphone-(myway2fortune.info).jpg

It is a payphone, a common sight where I live!

(just my opinion)
Considering where you live @MapleDots not surprised about the police not doing anything! Lots of serious crime going on (not downplaying your theft, just going by the news that I watch) where you live and other cities. So kinda understandable that the police didn't respond...I recently had a "Break and Enter" in my tool shed...police took a report and all my information.. then suggested that I check out the "pawn shops" regularly..

Anyway, glad you got your keys back and thanks for the review of TrackR!

Oh yeh, you would have gotten sued for aggravated assault..and then the cops would have been like "why didn't you just report this to us and saved yourself a whole lot of trouble" :xf.confused:

Yes... so technically I'm not sure a crime was committed here. I have our cell number on my wife's keys as well. In this case it's more of a forced finders fee payment, and the guy was probably afraid that I would lash out on him, hence the whole cloak and dagger routine.

So if I find your laptop can I call you and ask for 200 bucks or I keep it. Is it considered extortion or is it a finders fee that is forced on the poor sap having lost the item?

I have a note in my wallet that says if the wallet is ever lost the finder can keep all the cash and claim a $100 reward upon return of the wallet. I figure those are my best odds at getting my wallet back.

In a perfect world you would just have people that are kind and return your belongings for the sake of doing a good deed. I figured long ago I was not counting on that with my wallet and fortunately I have never had to test this scenario.

Most strip malls still have one or two but they are getting rare at gas stations now.

Kinda understand why, if I understand correctly and was told right.. Bell Canada charges a fee for having them there!

Good conclusion. I have to assume it was a kid or immature human and/or crackhead. Hope you checked the keys for evidence of copying...may be worth changing the front door locks (unless you have and use a security system).

No house keys, just car fobs and misc shed keys etc.
I use all the latest technology with smart phone entry for the house.

Honestly i think this is one of the best stories i have read on here. Should have left a shitty $1 bill for him to pick up as matter of principle guys a tool wouldn't be surprised if he took them from you or watched them fall out of your pocket .

Keys can be replaced of-course at cost maybe more than $100 but i personally would never be held to ransom in this way. Shit situation either way i don't know the cost of your key replacements i do know car keys especially card ones can cost hundreds so maybe in the long run it worked out better financially . Blah .

Worlds full of degenerates . The thing is if he was nice about it you could have obliged to offer him an award as a finders fee but this is just extortion maybe he does it a lot.

In-fact personally i would have camped out and caught the fucker and rung his neck think i would have tried to take $100 for wasting my time.

Would have cost be about $500 to replace the two key fobs and some of the keys (like the shed key) were my only copy. Plus the cost of the tracker keyfob, time etc. I would much rather have paid the $100 but quite honestly if the bugger had met me face to face and demanded the cash I would have had a few choice words for him. A forced reward is pretty underhanded.

Does anyone have a keytracker that actually works?

Can I get a few examples?

Did it ever help you find your keys?

I think you dealt with it in the most effective manner for sure. It's the kind of situation that can get out of hand, By any chance was it in the Hood ? i'm just making an assumption ...

HeHe Let me make a correction here....

My profile says Toronto but I live NEAR the GTA in a safe suburban neighborhood. No slums just houses and strip malls. It's definitely an upper crust community with very little crime. Everyone has security systems, cameras and such which makes things pretty safe.

This was probably the worst thing I have been exposed to in a long time.... so you could say I have been pretty lucky. That is also why I took the chance to bring the money, I was never worried about my safety or anything.

Not a nice situation for sure. If loosing your keys is a bad situation i could tell you a few personal hairy situations which would keep you awake at night .

Everything for a reason i guess is the most positive outlook.
