So... I have a little tracker ( https://www.thetrackr.com ) on my keychain and the thing is really not reliable. It uses bluetooth to communicate and that in itself sucks, wireless would be much better.

So knowing this tracker is not overly reliable I made a sticker with my cell phone number and stuck it on the tracker key tag just in case I ever lose my keys.

Well it happened.... I lost my keys and the tracker was absolutely useless, it told me the last location was the grocery store and I knew that. My wife and I went shopping and she drove home instead of me so I did not realize I misplaced my keys.

Try as I may all I could see was the last location of my keys, then last night I get a phone call from some dick who said he found my keys and he wants $100 to return them to me. He was calling from a phone booth and told me to put the money under a rock at a specific location. He said once he has the money he will place the keys in the same location and we will both be happy.

What an underhanded son of a Bi%$h this guy must be >:(>:(>:(>:(

I don't really have much choice because the key electronic key fobs from both of my cars are on there and they would cost a small fortune to replace.

Why in gods name would he not just ask me for a reward for his time and effort instead of making me go through these insane shenanigans?

Anyways.... I said I need to go to the bank to get a $100 dollar bill and I will put it there after work today. I am inclined to go wait there to find out who the jerk is but he could be there at any time during the night and I can't stay up all night for 100 bucks.

Oh man...... I am just furious >:(>:(>:(>:(

I'm not one to promote violence but all I'm saying is there's a sale at eBay bro.

How will he know when the money is there?

I told him I would put it there after work today but he can pick it up wheneer he wants. I would have to hide out and wait for him.

Seriously though.... I just want to see what kind of an A hole would do this to another person.

I can't help the similarities....
............someone loses the keys to their online property (ie. domain) and someone else finds them (in the drops) and asks money to give them back :xf.grin::-P:xf.grin::-P:xf.grin::-P

that was not funny

Both key fobs together are almost $500 plus the tracker, plus my other keys, plus the time and labour to replace.

Call the police and offer him a $200 reward for the return. If this is real, I'm feel your pain but there are so many ways to catch this guy.

This sounds like a desperate person. You have no idea what would prompt them to behave this way. They could simply be a douche bag. Or they could have a newborn in ICU and lost their job.

It would be easy to set up a hidden video camera to record him collecting the money and release that video to the public. Even the threat of that would possibly make him rethink this plan, except you have no way to contact him before the drop. Maybe instead of the $100 under the rock, you just put a note that says "Smile - You're on Candid Camera" although then you may never see your keys again. Hmm . . .

Ah Ha! I got it - the note says - Smile you're on Candid Camera - and if you leave the keys and walk away this video will NOT be sent to <insert local news station here> and police. You could even maybe just leave $20 with that note as a gesture of good will, if an honest person returned your keys would you have given them some reward?

Good Luck!

At this point I have no choice but to pay the $100 because the police say its a lost and found issue.
I don't understand why I have to leave the money under a rock. Why would he not meet me someplace? He must be ashamed at what he is putting me through.

Because he doesn't plan on giving your money back? Why would you go along with this without trying to ID the person and take some action to make sure you're not getting ripped of?

I can't sit in a parking lot all night waiting for someone to come pick up the money just so I can catch him. Trust me I would love to know who this a$$ is but I plan to put the money where instructed and hopefully he is honest enough to leave the keys.

I would have given him the money without all the mystery if he has simply asked me to meet him in the parking lot.

But you didn't tell him that?

But you didn't tell him that?

I asked him if we could meet and he said no and all I had to do was follow instructions and I would get my keys.

I don't think he is proud of extorting me for money, he probably thinks I might report him.

Visit a biker bar and offer the 2 toughest looking bikers $50 each to get your keys from this guy when he lifts up that rock.

OK, so it's just after 6pm my time.... going to put the money where instructed.

I'll stick around in hiding for an hour to see if I can catch him.
If he is not there I have to go, I have to pick my son up at Karate.

I cannot put into writing how annoyed I am right now!!

Just a thought - how do you know he has your keys for sure? My guess you contacted the grocery and left your info, maybe a rogue employee privy to your info will grab the money and produce no keys?

If he is smart at all he will not show up for hours AND if anyone sees you, they might discover the money and take it before he arrives.

This had horribad written all over it

Good luck and be safe

How's it going? Are you "staked out?"
This is so exciting!

At the very least try to get some video before confronting him... are you really going to confront him? What if he has friends with him or if he is huge?
(so excited over here, maybe you could go facebook live with this)

Plus how are you to know when the keys have been left, and what would be from preventing some other person then finding your keys and taking them from that spot?

When I re-read the thread more carefully @mr-x was first to suggest video which was entirely my plot above, likely too late for any sting ops now

I called the cops and was put through to an officer who said it is a lost and found issue. He said its not ethical but would be hard to prosecute.
That's the most Canadian thing I've ever heard :ROFL::ROFL:

At what point do we call the cops and tell them @MapleDots is now missing, last seen crouching next to a rock with a $100 bill?

YES - We should have had a back up plan, if @MapleDots didn't post again by xx o'clock, we call the mounties with his last known location and look for clues.

There's only two clues..
1. Rock
2. Hundred dollar bill

Not much to go on.

Not to forget the 911 call he made and when police said its lost and found issue.
