The internet domain registrar and web hosting company is making it easier to search for and register available emoji-based domains. On Friday, the company launched a search engine for emoji domains. People can visit the site on their phones, type in a string of emoji and see if the domain is available.
As more of the world increasingly uses the internet on phones and other mobile devices, a flood of emoji-based domains seems inevitable. Heck, even the Touch Bar on Apple's new MacBook Pro will let you type in emoji, something that's difficult to do with a traditional computer keyboard...

Emoji domainers and visitors need to see the Emoji display in the address bar in the browser.

Any signs you'll have that soon/ ever?
The only way you're probably going to see that if you mask the domain name when forwarding..

Interesting to read the comments here. Lot's of misinformation. I will try to break it down, then you can come to your own conclusions. For the record, I own (car).ws.

-Emoji URLs are a security nightmare. Pictures (emojis) could be easily spoofed/hacked, hence the reason Godaddy isn't already selling emoji's in .com, etc. They are TRYING hard to push ICANN to change their stance (see below), but it's going to be awhile, boys and girls.

- The reason Godaddy is not selling these emoji IDN's is because ICANN controls it. ICANN is unlikely to approve emoji URLs until they are 100% sure they can mitigate the risks. WHICH ARE VERY REAL.

- THE ONLY REASON Website.ws can sell emoji URLs is because dot ws is not regulated by ICANN. Same with .LA. One of the only 2 registrars that can say that.

- SO .ws will be it for awhile. I've been at this since 1996. It took almost 15 years to get the dot whatever TLD's. My guess it won't take 15 years to get the emoji's in dot com, net, but it will be awhile. In Internet years it will be long enough. Voice is going to be how we do things in the future and hand movements (squiggly lines made by your finger).

- Emoji's sole purpose for (businesses) will be to market something. SO they do have value for the right business. Only buy 1 characters and in some cases 2 if you can get them. I bought (car).ws. soon after Coca Cola bought (smiley).ws because Car dealers might want to use it for the millennials. Personally I had forgotten I had it until someone just emailed me today to make an offer on it. $250. I turned it down flat. This is a wait and see game. The interesting thing though is interest is rising, and the only game in town (that really works) is dot ws.

That's it!

Good luck, hope the info helps you as an investor or buyer.

Check out this article that just popped up on CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2017/05/29/design/emoji-digital-language/

Some key quotes:

"Emojis have become, without a doubt, a design classic. But how effective are they as a communication tool?

Over 6 billion emojis are sent on a daily basis, with over 90% of the world's online community making regular use of them."

"So if emoji isn't a language, what is it for? Some see emoji as little more than an adolescent grunt, taking us back to the dark ages of illiteracy. But this prejudice fundamentally misunderstands the nature of communication -- and in so doing, it radically underestimates the potentially powerful and beneficial role of emoji in the digital age as a communication tool.
All too often we think of language as the kingpin in our everyday world of meaning. But much of the meaning we convey and glean in our everyday social encounters comes from nonverbal cues."

"Digital communication provides us with an important channel of communication in our increasingly connected social and professional lives."

"We live in a digital age, and emoji is an adaptation to this most recent arena of human interaction."

While this doesn't specifically have anything to do with emoji domains, I think it really does illustrate that they are the natural progression and evolution of communication on the internet.

I think that even just their language-less ability to convey information and meaning, is worth quite a lot on it's own, combine that with a website that has multiple localizations, and now you have a real tool to connect with customers from all over the world with just one web address. This is really powerful stuff.

Lately I keep reading they are a security risk due to variations of the standard icons, shades, expressions... etc
~
I do tend to think it would be easy to be fooled if not familiar with all the variations

I wrote an article about how emoji are starting to see real traction in search. For example, when you type the watch emoji into google, you get real companies selling watches returning in the results. It's going to be interesting to see where this leads.

I wonder if it was someone from this thread that made an offer for EmojiPet ? Anyways I sent to auction on Sedo, I think it would be a handy genre to be into with an operating website selling/displaying them

Considering most would be regged there it would be a "safe" venue to list and buy, I have purchased names from Godaddy that were regged elsewhere and became a no sale, but the names regged with Godaddy have gone without a hitch so far

Interesting, this could be a hype (well it seems to me) but it could be something that would last for a long time. That being said I will register a few just in case :)

actually, this just launched today: https://xn--i-7iq.ws/gallery
Very nice! Yours or you discovered?

Sidenote...a month or two ago the .to ccTLD had just about every single emoji and symbol still available. But the landscape is barren now in that extension for single characters after someone mentioned the extension in a post. They go quick!
