How much discount is appropriate for a premium domain?

Hi, I've just registered on namepros for some advice about buying a premium name. My business has been operating quite successfully for a few months. It's a service provider and uses a .uk extension . The website is not essential but it is useful for being found online from new international queries.

The .com extension of my domain name is available from one of the large domain resellers for $2,195.

My question is what sort of discount would it be reasonable to expect (if any). After an initial inquiry they replied with the offer of a $100 discount.

Obviously the .com extension is more desirable and looks a lot more professional, but as the site is nothing more than a shop front it's not essential to me. So I'm trying to figure out if it's actually worth investing in. Would there be any re-sale value in the domain in the future?

Thanks

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
It's difficult to answer without knowing the name, but here are a couple of thoughts.

Have a look at the whois info, and try to estimate how long the name has been on offer and undeveloped. This would give you some idea of the ease of selling the name, and the possibility of getting a price reduction.

I wouldn't ask for a discount, I would make an offer - maybe $950. others may have different ideas about this.

You will lose traffic to the .com, only you can try to estimate the value of this. Obviously it is dependent on the way customers find your site, and the number of repeat visitors.

If you are a success, you will increase the value of the .com

whatever amount off the list price, that the owner is willing to give, is appropriate.

Hi, I don't think there is another buyer, or likely to be one. It has been listed for at least four months, I know because I took the .uk extension when this one wasn't available.

Today I offered the $950 as suggested but it was not accepted, so I assume they'll stick very close to the asking price.

I just don't know at this point, as it's not an essential expense for me right now. Plus my current site ranks #1 in Google for the two-words, which is what will appear when people search for the company.

I would just ask about price and answering something like "wow! just for one domain?"
Now they know you want thier domain and could pay $950 for it.
If you could pay $950, so you can pay more...

$2K is a very fair end-user asking price for any decent .COM in 2017 honestly.
If a buyer can't justify the cost then they might not be the right buyer.

If it is not essential then I would just move on.

If they didn't make a counter offer, then I'd leave them to think about it. Alternatively you could reply and say something like - I'm sorry you felt my offer was too low. I'm just starting the business, and it is difficult for me to pay much more for the name without knowing the traffic that the name will generate.

In the end it depends on how much you want to pay, and whether you want to go international. As an aside, if we can get rid of the puppet May, and get moving on a clean Brexit, then the UK will grow as a world player, and .UK may be a good extension for you.
