Increasing Reg Fees

Just me or are reg fees getting expensive now?

Godaddy is about £13 (GBP) for .com. At that price, I have to think twice about registering a name for the sake of it!

Used to be less than half that, as I recall.

I think you need to sell your soul to GD to get the price down.
You have to be careful when paying from the UK. OnlineNIC charges a small %age to use a credit or debit card, and some credit cards charge for an overseas transaction if you pay in dollars.

At the moment I'm using a Nationwide select credit card to prepay with Name Silo. NS don't penalise me for using a credit card, and Nationwide don't charge a transaction fee for the dollar payment. Also I get up to two months to pay and half a percent cashback from the Nationwide. I know it's only pennies, but it keeps the cost down to a competitive level. It's under £6.80, and I could probably negotiate that down if I moved 100 or so names, and I'll probably do that in the near future.

As a bonus, I get some extras free from Name Silo. - privacy for example.

GoDaddy knows how to take your money in more ways than one.
That said... I too noticed the .com's are creeping up.

Pay in USD rather than GBP at GoDaddy.com for .com's
It's cheaper (even taking into account foreign exchange fees).
and look for coupon codes or join the GoDaddy.com discount club if you have enough domains to make that worth while.

I used to pay in USD, forever get redirected to the UK site now, plus in the UK we have to pay V.A.T.

I've never used a coupon to register a name (registered my first name in 1999)! I can never seem to find them.

I still have a reseller account with a registrar (in the UK) that I have had since 2000 and initially used it for bulk registrations, but had a look at that recently and it wasn't much cheaper.

I suppose it's inflation like most other things, prices go up over time. That said, with technology, prices often go down with time!

Maybe not a bad thing, stop us registering so much junk!

Maybe join DDC. I save quite a bit that way.

gd cannot possibly be as sily as to increase prices when there are tens of other registrars people can go to to get old pricings. something is not right here.
they are very skilled at keeping clinets.. and getting new ones.. and this is the first and foremost thing not to do, in order to keep and get them.

either way.. here in canada.. with ddc.. absolutely nothing has changed.

Didn't know such a thing (Godaddy Discount Domain Club) existed! I don't register many names these days. Not sure if I would qualify for a discount. Thanks for the info.

Use a cheaper registrar. There are many that don't charge a yearly fee for discounts.

A few of them have reps here that are very active and helpful.

You don't have to qualify. It's like $80 bucks to join then per year, but all regges, transfers, etc will be priced at $8.29 or something each. It doesn't take many domains to save alot. I'd think about it.

Interesting, thanks.

As mentioned earlier, there are alternatives such as OnlineNIC, which are much less expensive.

If you get the domainer price at Epik you would need hundreds of names to save the money by using DDC at GD. Just food for thought.

It's only a one-time $99 deposit at OnlineNIC to qualify for their $8.XX .com prices

That looks interesting. $8.59 USD for .com. Doesn't look like it will force me to their UK site and charge me VAT and GBP, so even with the low Pound value, could be worthwhile. Cheers.

Just had a quick look at them. The price is $8.59 already.

InternetBS.net is $8.49 with free privacy. I have used them successfully.

Be careful with OnLine NIC. I've lost a few good names through them. It took me about 6 months to get back OilDrum.com which left my account with quite a few months of life left. I never get an explanation for this. I lost IdleTalk.com as well, and that went to Huge Domains I think. I never did get that back.

That's plenty alarm bells for me, buddy! Never had that happen to me with hundreds of registrations over 18 years!

It might have been because the names hadn't been hosted. But I think if you pay the fees, you should keep the names.

Try a different registrar.

There are better and cheaper ones than GD.

Yes the prices at GD are out of control now, or at least in GBP's. I've been gradually transferring my domains over to NameSilo just in case I accidentally renew a name at GD without realising.

When it comes to regging new names, I will only use GD now if I can get a decent promo code.

Here is the Godaddy Discount Domain Club promo code. Brings it down from $119.88 to $71.93. 40% off. Domains come out to $8.29 plus tax or $8.47 total.

Thanks for all the input. Just registered some names with NameSilo. I like their ethos, they say they are cheap because they only do names and they don't advertise on the Superbowl!
