What are 3x2s?

Two three letter words that make a relevant keyphrase. Maybe that should be a 2x3.

An example is TopDog ( not the name in question).

I tend to talk to a lot of people when I'm out and about. When they ask me what I do, I say I'm an amateur Internet photographer. But recently I've started to add that I'm an amateur investor in domain names. Most people don't understand this, and say something like " I just use facebook, I wouldn't pay for a website".

I was a bit shocked when he said he'd got £2,000 in his pocket for the name, and I'm not sure he understood the process of buying domain names. It does raise the interesting possibility of selling names for cash though. I guess the only way you could do it would be by registrar push whilst you were on McDonalds WiFi.

I've just registered a 3+4 name that's in the same niche ( but not as good). I might try to sell him that as an alternative.

I'm tempted to try a joint arrangement. The guy I was talking to wanted the name for a younger guy he is funding for a new project. What would suit me is if the name was used to promote the new project, and I was able to put some advertising on the site. I would keep ownership of the name. At the moment the name isn't earning anything for me. Another alternative is to flip the name I've just registered. Certainly, I think it is worth following up on the contact.

Now that puts an interesting spin on things.... hell even if you could convince them to give you like a 10% share in the venture in exchange for the name.. (obviously if you feel it's a worthwhile venture)

It raises the possibility of selling names at public meetings - car names at classic car meetings for example.

Another one is geo-names.For example, I own WestMeon.com. West Meon is a small village in Hampshire England, so the name is not going to be worth a lot. I reg'd it for historic reasons, but I don't need it any more. I was going to advertise the name in the local newsagent's window, but I'm thinking that I could rent a stall at the village fete, and maybe I could sell some other names as well. My partner buys bags of costume jewellery for pennies, and she sorts through them to see if there is anything she likes in them. I'm sure she would make a good profit selling the stuff she doesn't want ( and it would clear some storage space, ).

Very interesting story! Don't let this opportunity slip through your fingers. Grab it and stay in contact with this customer. You should sell if you feel comfortable with the price, imo. Thanks for sharing and keep us updated.

OK - here is more to the story. I was discussing this car with its owner, and that's when the name came up. The car isn't really a rat rod, it's in far too good a condition imho, but some people seem to include cars like this with airbrushed paintwork. I've also got a rat rail domain name, and I'm not so interested in that. I'll see if the guy can use that.

It all started when I saw a matte black Camaro, and I thought I would take some pictures for the domain name I picked up the other day - MatteBlackCars.com , and I saw a matte black rat van as well. Domaining isn't about staying at home and getting red eyes from scanning the drop lists. It can be about getting out and enjoying yourself to promote that name you found. Anyway here are the pics of the two matte black cars.

If you like the offer sell the domain. Don't get greedy. Many domainers will go to their graves with 99% of their domains unsold because of greed.

use registars where you can confirm the outgoing push immediately
( as soon as you hold the money in your hand )

Usually when i socialize and i talk about domains people look at me like i'm from mars, they dont even dream what a domain is.

If you don't want to sell the domain lease it or ask for ad space.

I would take the offer. You said he wanted the name for a younger guy he is funding, this means is a investor?

If he is i would sell the domain for that price and would ask him to go to me in the future when he needs domains for is investments (projects he funds) or recommend your domains to other investors, build a relationship with him.

Investors are powerful relationships, don't let that contact go.

I don't think he is an investor as such. I think his hobby is custom cars, and he is active in some of the clubs. I'm starting to think that hobbyists can be some of the best end users. They are often retired, and some have substantial funds available. I can remember seeing a programme about a guy who owned 3 steam cars, and he paid a lot of money for a large house with a stable block. He converted the stable block into workshops for his cars.

It has got me interested in trying to sell domain names at vintage fairs and classic car meetings. A magnetic sign to stick on the van should be enough to stimulate interest. I've got a 1939 motor cycle as well, so I could probably get free admission. Even if I don't sell anything, I'd enjoy the day out.
