What has or is working best for you at the moment:

1. A persona portfolio or your own website that lists your domain names for sale.
2. Domain auction sites
3. Domain marketplaces
4. Forums like namepros ect..

Reason I'm asking is because I'm thinking about creating a website listing domain names and websites I have for sale with a contact me or maybe even a payment gateway.

Your thoughts?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
1. whois
2. marketplaces

imo....

Having names on as many platforms as possible seems to work well for me including my own website.

Keep in mind that marketplaces like Sedo, Afternic, Flippa, Namepros, etc, have been around for some time and have tons of traffic. Use that to your advantage while you build up your own website.

People like having options, so while many may prefer to do business on a 3rd party site, others might feel more comfortable working one-on-one with you.

So, in my opinion just get your names out there by using all of the tools at your disposal.

Very true and makes a lot of sense, totally agree. Thanks for your input as well.

Would you recommend a simple page showcasing your domain names with a contact form or invest in some kind of script that handles payments and inquiries kind of like a sedo clone or something?

Thanks again

Personally. I prefer my own domain website (or Efty if you cannot afford your own website. They are awesome), plus the two giants in the Industry Sedo and Afternic (which includes listing at GoDaddy). Domains are pointing to the landing page on whichever platform you prefer. Usually my own website. Most buyers don't really consider the commissions you pay. And so I'd add the 20% commissions to your Sedo/Afternic listings.

NICE!
Thanks for sharing efty, this looks very interesting. I actually spent a few hours looking for a domain marketplace script last night to throw on a domain name to showcase my domains and maybe others who are interested in advertising theirs.

Again. Personally. I wouldn't run before you can walk. The problems with a domain market script is sellers are lazy to customize the script because "they've just thrown it together" and it looks like just the same as 1000's other of identical websites, because they haven't made it their own. As a buyer looking for a domain will soon find out. Also. I wouldn't let anybody else sell their domains on your personal website. It complicates things quite a lot. Usually, not for the better. As far as customization is concerned, it's often better to buy a script using wordpress at.CodeCanyon.net. But make sure it is used widely without many complaints They are probably easier, (or more difficult depending on your PoV), more user friendly to customize than a PHP script.

Undeveloped™ is a nice option too if you don't have a site or are using in conjunction with it.

Yeah...just undeveloped looks kinda dull and you can't spice your page...I also think their commission is high compare to what they are offering.

You can add a custom header image and let buyers make payments on the domain for sale. Not many other places will do both of those for you for free up front. (y)

Yeah...what I really need is some exposure for my 15%

Some really good points, thanks!
I have a few ideas of what I want to do, your points about selling for others eliminated one of those.

So now I'm thinking of creating a site where people can join up, create a portfolio page and have a profile and contact page as well where buyers can contact them directly. Bit of an extra way of advertising. I know there's probably a heap of the same kind of sites but I would definitely make it unique if I went ahead with it.

Undeveloped™ is a nice option too if you don't have a site or are using in conjunction with it.

Yeah I signed up yesterday to undeveloped just for a sticky beak but didn't like it. Actually found it hard to navigate and filter domains.

Inquiry through bodis and namepros auctions for me mostly. Sometimes they whois me.

Since 2003 most of my sales have been direct. Why because that's where I point the domains to my own sales sites. If I'm looking to buy a domain I'm gonna type it in to see if parked or developed so I know if it's even possible to achieve a purchase. Most end users have no clue about whois. If it leads to an aftermarket page you just handed commission away and the lead is blind as most offers derive from where ever the domain points. Nothing wrong with listing your domains at Sedo, Afternic etc... but pointing your names there just gives away the leads that your own traffic generated. Send the domain to your own page then you achieve name, email, phone, ip address etc... and now negotiations aren't blind which helps and you can send to Payoneer Escrow, Escrow on your own with 0 commissions.

So in my opinion list all of your domains at least at Sedo & Afternic. But I'd direct the domains to...

Your own sales site landing pages, do it right or don't do it, good domain, nice logo, ssl, third party escrow Payoneer Escrow etc... If the site doesn't look trustworthy/professional then no use. Plenty of php scripts, wordpress plugins to achieve this. Personally I prefer stand alone PHP scripts as wordpress kinda bloated and a bot magnet.

Don't wanna get into your own site....

I prefer these 2 alternates if not doing your own thing as they don't require an end user to sign up like at most aftermarkets before placing a bid as why should your own traffic inflate their end user database where they can push their own inventory at the buyer as most aftermarkets Sedo, Afternic, DomainNameSales etc... have their own portfolio of domains for sale, another domainer's inventory at the buyer etc... when your traffic could be building your own end user database. Nobody has your best interests in mind except yourself.

That's some great advice, especially the last bit (Nobody has your best interests in mind except yourself.).

I personally agree and it all makes sense to set up a personal page - it's also another way of communicating with potential buyers.

Example, if they contact once to inquire about a domain you can always follow up with other domains down the track.

So it would be like having an email list of potential buyers at your fingertips where going with a third party platform you don't have full control.

I'm going to test it all out on my own site and make it -
Professional
Simple/Easy to navigate
Slick contact form
Good clear instructions of how to contact/inquire and how to buy ect..

Thanks for your reply and advice!

@SpareDomains quick question:
With the domain name of the site you're selling from do you use a personal approach or a more brandable type of domain?

I'm thinking of using a domain I reg'd yesterday for a domain portfolio - Namepire(.)com My Domain Name Empire.
I like the domain but not sure if everyone will get it? I guess the only way to find out is to test it and make it professional looking.

Go to a Sedo parked page and look for the sign up form that states....

"Receive updates on this and similar domains."

Those similar domains will either be owned by Sedo or another domainer as their goal is to just make a sale and get their cut. Run your own site and no matter what domain sells you profit as it's filled with 100% your own inventory. Pending your domains don't suck as the fanciest site in the world won't sell turds.

90%+ of all of my sales since 2003 have been direct. Have received a few Christmas cards and a few buyers in my Facebook friend list. Can never achieve that with anonymous offers.

List your domains anywhere ya can Sedo, Afternic, DomainNameSales etc... but only for internal leads through their market. Let your domain traffic bring unfiltered leads direct to you either through your own pages, Bodis, Efty etc... as most leads come from the parked page and you'll gain information on who you're dealing with, deals will be wrapped up quicker since you 100% control them, no commission and just a simple routing to Payoneer Escrow, Escrow.com or whoever you prefer.

I use a couple descriptive keyword domains but your name sounds fine. Not so much about the name of the site but the quality of what's on the site for sale. The key is directing your domains to the sales site so slowly the power of your entire portfolio drives in leads direct. If you own 10 domains then obviously be a longer wait then hundreds or thousands pointing in. Another advantage of doing your own thing is your not stuck with the generic category structure, you can build your own categories based on your portfolio.

An idea that works reasonably well is to have your domains that fall under the same category or industry listed on your own website, because this way a visitor may want to browse your other listings too. While, if your listed domains are unrelated to one another, the visitor won't check your other domains.

Solid advice again, thanks so much. Appreciate it!

Going to get busy working on something right now and hopefully have it up by tonight. I guess the other advantage is, you can send people to a single domain as well.

Would it be wise to do this:
Create a site with categories.
Each domain also has it's own page with a bit of a about the domain blurb with a form to contact me.

^ Then for each domain name I want to sell - forward that domain to the page I have set up on say Namepire.

Or forward the domain name to the Namepire homepage? I think to it's own page would work better but I'm no expert.

"Pending your domains don't suck as the fanciest site in the world won't sell turds."
I laughed but it is so true and I tell that to people when designing sites for them. It's all about the product and getting people to that product.

Once again, thanks heaps for taking your time to write such great advice!

I think to it's own page would work better but I'm no expert.

I think the best is to the specific domains sales page.
2nd best to the category page so they see other domains in that category but from the specific domains sale page all your categories could be positioned in the sidebar anyway.
Home page would be easiest as 1 bulk forward but why make people search a site and click around get em straight to the specific domains sales page and get the action/offer asap as in your reply to the inquiry you could always post a link here are more domains in the "financial" category etc... if they missed your other similar domains or if their offer isn't up to par you can provide alternatives at different price points. "We'd be too far apart on that one but this one could go for that range" etc....
In other words get the contact as quick as possible as you can always engage once contact is made, having too many steps can lead to no contact being made.
That's the beauty of the contact info not being blind, you don't have to worry about 100% of everything being in their sight at first view now you have a lead that isn't anonymous that you can work more.

Totally agree! Less clicks and effort they have to commit too the better. Thanks again for your input, it's actually helping me a lot.
Cheers!

Would love everyones feedback on this design/layout for a personal sales page.

I'm thinking basic info about the domain name like a short blurb what it is and what it would be good for + where it's registered and expiry date on the left and the make offer/contact form on the right.

Domain buyers: What do you look for when thinking about buying a domain name?

What other information should I include on a sales page?

Thanks and appreciate your feedback.

I think simple is best, especially when you don't have the budget for something complex like scripts or other fancy stuff. As long as it's presented professionally and you have a way for your visitors to contact you, then that's good enough.

Very nicely presented. Clean and professional. I honestly think that's just the right amount of info once you add it. No need to add anymore. That's just my opinion. Great job! (y)

Thanks for your feedback.

I have a couple of pages up live at the moment but here is what each domain page will look like after doing some more tweaking: http://namepire.com/homebrewbarn-com/

Working on home page and supporting pages at moment, then I will add more domains and try promote to see how it converts :)

I've also forwarded the domain names I have to the domains pages I have set up.

Thanks again.
