Microsoft’s Bing.com search engine, the second most popular search engine service . . . shows a listings URL without any ending extension if the domain is a .com. This is pretty interesting because it is suggesting that Bing would prefer users not see the ending URL of the .coms, which personally, I think is an awful idea. They have not done this in paid search ads, only algorithmic results...

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I don't see this in my search with Bing

If I were a (online) brand on .COM, I would definitely protest this move. .COM is part of many companies' overall brand. Though one way to read this is that .COM is to be expected.

The fact that the first link is the The Onion is telling. In case anyone does not know, The Onion is a site that runs gag news articles.

I'm just going to copy and paste what I wrote on the blog.

Google has been doing the same thing for some searches for awhile now. Problem is if a user is looking to visit a specific location (URL) they will keep searching till they find it and not just rely on googles initial search results. Google biggest threat is direct navigation and great domain names. Search engines are doing what they can to eliminate the threat but in the end no matter how big and powerful they won’t be able to change where the future is heading. Google seen the threat to it’s ad business and that’s why I believe they separated their businesses to lessen their companies risk.

I've been trying for the last 15 -or so- minutes to get the results that the author of the article had with no success, so I started clicking things at random to see where it'd lead.

Well, if one searches "guardians of the galaxy vol 2 official trailer" on Bing they will see 'only some' results with no domain extensions.... and that happened only on 'Edge' (windows 10 new browser).

Here is a screenshot:

I'm not sure what triggers the hidden extensions but it's there for real.

A step into the direction of hiding domain extensions. Next they are going to hide the URL bar.

Why???

Plain and simple..... they want you to punch the url into bing and not the address bar. It is a slow and methodical move away from the URL bar as a whole.

Think about it.... either google or bink.... no URL bar.
That will add millions of searches and income to their bottom line.

I heard a long time ago that google ultimately plans to do away with the URL bar as well.
So basically even if you type in a direct URL it will still show you the top 10 results or so.
This will be a cash cow for them.

many people always want to see the actual URL for phishing reasons and sometimes to see if a URL is https or not.

question is, what are they trying to accomplish? I tried googling and binging(is that a word?) it, but couldn't find an official explanation. Did they get tired of updating their algorithms to accommodate the ever increasing number of tlds? or are they relying on the fact that the general population has .com subconsciously planted in their heads so no need of mentioning the obvious? interesting anyways.

A good step I would say - there are many oldies like me who will click the .com first from the search results. This will boost relevant contents irrespective of the domain name and extension - people will learn that the extension or domain is just a placeholder, it's the matter which matters.

who uses bing anyway lol

When you don't know something, you don't need to have your ball on that thing. You might be good in domaining but not good as Webmaster.

Lots of companies don't use .Com on the end of their name anymore cuz they don't have to. They are fully recognized. They are 100% branded. People know instinctively there is a .com. No other url can OR will be able to claim that. ALL the BIG BOYS that have a universal and worldwide presence use a .com. Sorry, .com is UNIQUE, POWERFUL and does not need explanation. This shows strength.GREAT strength, not weakness..Com is and will be the standard for everyone reading this for your LIFETIME!

I would prefer NewYork.city over NewYork.com :)
.City tells something, .com - nothing ...

I wonder how many investors have been brainwashed by the registries?

the biggest strength of .com is that it does not mean anything. It tells you, URL, website, everyone young/old knows this. A default website ending that everyone knows.

short neutral endings are far more desirable and useful from a branding perspective. Forget about the Kool-Aid. They are selling you a weakness as a strength.

an ending with meaning can add value in some cases but usually it does more harm than good, unnecessary.

theonion.com vs. www.theonion.news
