Hi All,

I've been reading up about domain backordering, but there's so much info that seems to change regularly it's difficult to know the best approach to take. I build sites for a living, and owned plenty of domains, but I'm completely new to catching an expiring domain.

The domain I'm looking at is a .com, with an expiry date of tomorrow. It's owned by HugeDomains, who I know are big boys in domaining, so there's a good chance they'll auto-renew it. They have it listed currently for $2.3k.

I have a few questions if any of you fine folk care to offer any advice...

Is it likely HugeDomains will release a domain? Or is the cost so trivial they'll just retain it as a matter of course?
Which service is best to try a back order? I know DropCatch are owned by HD, but if I backorder with them, would this just give HD a heads-up there's interest prompting them to renew it?
When is the best time to place a back order with e.g. SnapNames or NameJet? I know they work together, so best to place with just one of them

Any advice would be greatly appreciated - I'm not a speculator, I'm just looking for the name for a project!

Thanks all.

Place it with snapnames when you want, it will not change anything...

yes
only place backorder with them when the domain has pending delete status

dropcatch, snap, NJ

Thanks both, yes I think I'll stay clear of DropCatch for this. No whois update on the domain as yet, I'll get onto SnapNames. Cheers.

The name will probably get renewed, but if it doesn't, after 70 days or so, the name will enter "pending delete" status. Once in that status, you might as well order it with every back order service. No need to order at NJ and Snapnames separately - they are the same service now.

Does HugeDomains ever drop a name?

Yes they do

Alas, not in my case. They've just renewed it for another year :(

Thanks again all, it's been interesting learning more about the process, thanks for your input.
