With thousands of startups needing a name for their new company and many more existing businesses also branching out all the time and needing names for their new line of products and services it seems that brandable domains is one of the areas that could be very beneficial to domainers both old and new and deserves to be explored further.

Below are a few points of discussion to get this thread started, if I have left something important out please let me know so that it can be added to them. If you have any tips or advice about brandable domains please feel free to share them with the rest of us.

1-What is a brandable domain.

2-How many different types of brandable domains are there and is one type better than the others.

3-What makes a brandable domain stand out amongst thousands of others.

4-What is the optimum length for a brandable domain, how long can a brandable domain be and still qualify as being a good choice.

5-What types of brandable domains are most desired by startups and existing businesses.

6-What is the best way to find brandable domains.

7-What is the best way to sell brandable domains.

Attention Newbies: It's probably best to first hear what some of the more experienced domainers have to say about this subject before you consider getting any domains, and even then it's probably best to experiment with just a few domains at a time. You should be able to sell one domain and then use the proceeds from that sale to get more domains, if you cannot even sell one domain then you are doing something wrong and need to adjust your strategy. IMO

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Catchy, creative and memorable are primarily the characteristics that all savvy investors look for in a brandable domain. However, these characteristics are of course subjective, so it's not like there's an exact formula for figuring out which brandables will sell.

I think you have to figure out the type of domains you enjoy working with. In my case, I'm always coming up with random ideas so brandables are my favorite.

Some of these ideas usually hit me when I'm looking at domains to buy, so I immediately type them up and usually end up with a list of sometimes 30-50 names within a couple minutes. Then I choose what I think are the best ones and register them if they're available. Some of them sell within a short period of time others take a little more time.

Keep in mind that some of the best brands have deep meaning. That means that a powerful brand utilizes brand mapping techniques in the creative process. Here's an example of what brand mapping a deep meaning may look like:
Meaning Of Scorpion Agency Logo.png

Ok brands are, ok. Great brands are, great. However, deep meaning brands are powerful and much more attractive/beneficial to a new start-up when exicuted and presented properly.

Just some food for thought. ;)

6 legs, 6 points, 6 meanings that firmly grip the surface of humanity allowing for ethical movement. Deep meanings can sometimes have more of a personal twist, the legs are one of those in this case. However, this simply fortifies that each brand should have meaning to the potential buyer that hits home and sparks interest. Like with anything in life, not everyone likes the same things. The optimal buyer/investor/developer will have some of the same passion/taste that a reseller does, which is what attracted them to the brandable domain being sold in the first place. :)

There seems to be alot of diference of opinions on what makes a good brand name. I think that will always be subjective and also subject to change. The one word good ones still seem to have the most monetary potential.
For me they have to be prounceable and I am not big on mispellings or creative spellings like double letters (although I did that on one of my hand regs I don't like it and sort of regret it) but I know some people like those variable spellings when they can't get the real spelling for that kind of brandable.

I think my biggest fault is my hand regs were names I like and pronouceable but not not super well thought out or investigated which is typical for the starting phase. So I sit on those and wait. I am in no big hurry on a name in its infancy. Although i was reading Domain Sherpa the other day and they were talking about loving spitfire.com which peaked my interest as i have two names with spitfire in them so that made me feel kind of like it is indeed a good memorable word.

I own virturion.com and I think it is very brandable but BB rejected it.
I also like adminti.com, mactux.com and pinturesco.com but they are also rejected.
But I like them so much that I decided to develop them.. for me :)
There is no just one opinion, each one of us has his own best brandables.. that have no demand :)

Something like

Scorpion Agency | Deadly in its branding attacks

might give me the deep meaning I was really looking for, if I was a new start-up in a competitive marketplace. : )

This is an amazing thread! When I started buying domains, I read several books on domaining and spent quite a bit of money on poor domains. Last year, I bought a one-year subscription to DNAcademy and everything finally came together. Namepros has everything you need to know about domaining but DNAcademy will save you a lot of time and money.
Brandable domains are a great way to affordably build a domain portfolio. As you sell more domains, I would gradually recommend switching to more valuable domains. The more you can reinvest into quality domains the quicker you can scale your business.

Hi All,

I hope brand name is equal to [catchy-smooth-rememberable-short]

either one word or two words chemistry should work like Copywork.com

Copy + work
is a two-word domain name its smooth-catchy-unforgettable

Work + Copy doesn't make sense so it won't consider as a brand,

As my part included my experience,
Thanks

A great brandable domain has to enable immediate brain attraction in order to fulfill its duty of being memorable ,short and descriptive all in under 8 letters preferably .

With that said, the name not only has to relate to the industry it is targeting but also has to automatically engrave itself into ones head where it could NOT be forgotten or confused for a similar term.

Here are a few example of some Brandable domains that I currently own and that are for sale for those interested.

Happy to hear your thoughts

Sexierge.com

eSups.com

Fapsy.com

iFlyx.com

Sexetra.com

Valentining.com

A good and brandable name is not just a name that seems to soundgood. It also needs to have a clear pointing towards what it stands for. I have several, but two of them will be going live within the next six months.

The first one is a name for a dating-website for the somewhat heavier people or obese people. We have chosen a name that represents what the name stands for, but also a name that with an exclamation mark behind it gives it a positive twist: datesomeweight.com

The name also has (as it is not that short) another important characteristic: a sound-repeat. The 'ate' and 'eight' rhyme, which makes it a better sounding name.

The second name is chosen to be the trademark name (desposited two weeks ago) for a fashion-giftcertificate. We wanted a cool and to-the-point name, which has become cash2dress.com. Here also the rhyme in a way is enclosed in the name.

Brandnames should be able to reach millions, worldwide. A name like CouvertCard.com (for sale, great to create a discount-system with in the restaurant business, could make someone a fortune) can go anywhere, just like bnbcard.com for bed and breakfasts.

Adult-industry names work the same way. We have started selling them all as we have changed direction businesswise, but names like undress4cash.com, privatep**nclips.com, appyhooker.com and more have a certian ring to them which makes them strong enough to stand out.

If it's about random words that could be branded into something - short, catchy, memorable - I had Anabex.com some time back which I sold for a small profit. Looks like it has been turned into an eCommerce / Product Store now.

Another was Fussu.com - sold for a small profit once again.

Our best domain in terms of branding is without a shadow of a doubt the domain we named after the most notorious prison in America. As we use the domain to sell ads we needed a great name and agreat slogan.

We ended uw with adcatraz.com

Adcatraz, keeps attention captured
