It's no secret that the aftermarket in regards to New G's is a complete disaster, but what or who is to blame?

Is it because the continued registry shenanigans?.... The newest shenanigan is reported....."I pulled the zone file for .realty and randomly picked 50 domain name off the top of the file and found all of them were registered at Uniregistry, under privacy, and seemed to be offered for sale at Uniregistry."

https://www.thedomains.com/2017/04/...iregistry-in-2-days-almost-all-under-privacy/

Is it because the lack of marketing?

Is it because end users just don't like them?

or other?

I am going to say it is due to the continued shenanigans at the registry level. Although, not all registries are involved in robo regs, fake sales and other dishonest practices. Those registries that are involved in deceptive practices has hurt everyone. As a New GTLD domain investor, who has invested in the New G's, I remain completely disappointed that my hard earned honest money has been subject to such dishonest practices....That's my rant for the day, I had to let it out!

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
There is not much of a primary market, AKA end users.
Without a primary market there is not going to be a secondary market. It is basic supply and demand.

The lack of demand is for a large number of reasons but most go back to oversupply & registry/registrar greed. The hype, broken promises, shady marketing tactics, and other shenanigans have not helped them either.

My opinion is the primary market somewhat likes the New G's. I recently put a site together for a local restaurant and they decided on a .Restaurant....For weeks they interviewed their customers and concluded overwhelmingly that .Restaurant was a great choice.....I realize many people do not like the New G's for the primary market, but I see potential....IMO the registry shenanigans are too extensive to break through to the primary market at this time.

To many of them. To much uncertainty and well normal people just dont know they exist. At least the normal people i talk to.
I stick to .com and .ca

The prices for some of the domains are just stupid.
Limited end user market + insane prices = FAIL

Per my experience and observation...
You may spend/waste significantly less and get the same or even higher results with .info/.biz

There is just to many extensions, to many choices, to many pricing uncertainties.

If you don't get a .solutions, go for .services etc.. there is just way to much supply, most of held by domainers, many of them feeling the renewal pressure as these are not renewing at $8 like .com's.

Just like the stock market if it is ever to go higher, it has to drop down, fill the gaps, and attempt to move higher on actual merits.

Even if they know - they don't need these goods because FB and Twitter are enough for most of them.

ICANN is planning to launch the new portion of unnecessary TLDs in 2020...

AS far as I can tell, the new extensions suffer from a lack or marketing to anyone outside the domaining industry, ie endusers. I can honestly say that aside from GoDaddy tv ads, i have never once in my life seen an advert for a registrar, registry, extension or anything else domain related outside of domaining websites. So unless joe public is specifically looking for a domain name (probably on GoDaddy as they are the only registry that advertises), he will be clueless to the options he has.

Usually they are interesting only for regfee or for low budget endusers...
When lack of money - in short.

This. Why is this so hard to understand ? Domainers are trying to get so much ahead of the game, that they are putting the cart before the horse. If you want to sell domains, buy in extensions that are already in demand today.

And I don't think any of the new extensions will ever be mainstream. Domainers (and registries) are always overestimating the demand. End users have enough options to bypass the aftermarket.

too many, too late (.com and .net and .org had 25 years of the commercial internet to establish themselves), alternatives can sell to a certain extent but not thousands of extensions like .run, .horse etc. this just needs to crash and burn. it's unavoidable. they were asking for it.

the new G market, is strictly geared towards domainers

cuz they are the first fricking responders to them

there is no aftermarket, cuz nobody else wants them, after you've regged them and can't sell em

so, essentially, it's domainers fault for buying into it

:)

imo....

It's true Biggie, have you noticed how some registries are openly targeting domainers, and they also advertise on NP, on some blogs etc. Because they know it's easier to convince domainers than the crowds. Domainers (not all of them though) understand the concept and are more open than the average Joe. But domainers are not going to develop their domains and enhance the TLDs. They will just squat on them, waiting for a buyer that does not exist. Without visible quality development, those TLDs will never gain traction. Wasteland is not attractive to entrepreneurs in search of pristine soil to grow their next business venture.
It's the greater fool theory in action, but there is nobody after you :xf.grin:
Again, nobody should be surprised at the outcome...

ya, it true @Kate

when uni raised pricing on dem G's, who did it affect/effect and who was "be-itching" bout it the most....

domainers or end-users?

There should only be one more GTLD released and with 1 name, and it should be GTLD.RIP!

all of the above. the new gtld's may catch on 10 - 20 years from now - who knows. as it is most consumers know or trust them... so they stick with what they know - dot .com

i am so glad i didn't get sucked into the madness - im not looking at holding these names for that long in the hopes a few will sell in the far future, no thanks

There are sales happening (but most are registry sales). So, the new gTLD concept itself is not flawed. Take a look at sold.domains.

Just a flash in the pan, those outlier sales are so few and far between (considering that they are dispersed across hundreds of different extensions) that they are in no way representative of the new g's dominant trajectory.

Even though it has been several years since the new extensions were launched, they are still completely unknown to the general public, and there are no signs that will change any time soon. And as a significant shift in adoption and awareness will remain elusive in the coming years, early adopters will grow further disillusioned (especially end-users, but also domain investors - and ironically, with the premium pricing and reserved names system of the new extensions, domainers are practically end-users, and the registries are the domainers in this name space), and as a result these strings may end up being more obscure in the future than they are at present.

Especially liked the part, "early adopters will grow further disillusioned.".........That's me. :xf.grin:

Do you guys really believe most of those big sales in the GTLD? For those who been around long enough like myself, remember the fake Beauty.cc sale for 1 Mill about 15 years ago or so? Same shit here. 50% are fake, BS, inside jobs.
