Ignore hype threads. If the only thread you read is the Reported Sales thread, you will learn more than reading any combination of vr, ntld, and related speculatory conversations

Learn what’s valuable
This is definitely the most important skill you should acquire in domain investing. If you don’t know to differentiate good from bad, you are lost. Without this skill, you will be wasting time and spending money in worthless names.

Be realistic on investing and pricing
This is extremely important, because if you don’t get it right, you will soon conclude domaining doesn’t really work and give up. In our opinion, most hand-registered domain names should be priced under $500. Most of mine are priced at $480, $380 and $280. There are exceptions, of course, as time and experience will make you realize, but the fact is that most business owners prefer not to spend more that $500 on a domain name. In reference to investing realistically, try to keep your cost per domain at a minimum level. Every penny counts. Don’t think $10 or a similar domain registration fee, is not a lot of money, because as you register names and multiply $10 by 100, it does become something substantial.

There are, of course, many other things to have in mind, but most of them are acquired through experience.

How do one learn what's valuable. Any hint or guidance will be helpful.

There are many different factors to consider. However, my best advice to new investors is to start flipping keyword names. First, focus on names that describe a business or service in great demand. The most popular the business the better. The domain wording must make sense and reflect how people generally refer to that particular business or product. As an example, NewYorkPlumber.com is a good name, NewYorkPlumbering.com is bad; BusinessAdvisor.com is a very good name, while businessesAdvisor.com is not that good, although it may be worth a few hundred. Have in mind that here I am only referring to keyword names and not to brandable, which are a totally different animal.

How do you get to know which business is more popular than the other

One rule of thumb I always follow is to ask yourself: would you buy your own domain name from someone else if you wanted to flip it?
