The 3/7 update, jokingly called "Fred" by a Google employee (and the name stuck), is a core algo update that seems to target sites with aggressive monetization, ad overload, poor UX, possibly other related quality issues. Nothing new on backlinks.
Aggressive monetization = ads all over the page, in the middle of the content, placed where people would accidently click, can't read the page without closing a dozen popups...
