Let's imagine my brilliantly researched and written article on April 1st was true, I thought the question of the value of single letter .com's would make for an interesting discussion ...

https://www.namepros.com/threads/icann-to-auction-single-letter-coms-in-2018.1009990/

I'm thinking one could easily make the argument for at least mid 8 figures (~$50 Million) for ones like A.com (to Amazon), G.com (to Google), M.com (for Microsoft), S.com (for Samsung), etc

But would such companies really put out such sums of money for the most generic of all generics?

Would they be willing to shell out even more money than that if another company were interested?

How wide a difference in price could there potentially be between the various single letters?

Do you think the price of single numbers would differ significantly from the letters?
(Imagine selling 8.com at the peak of the CHIP craze in late 2015? lol)

I think one could even argue they could be worth even more .. but how many companies even have that much money to spend on what essentially would be rebranding?

Supposedly Z.com sold a few years ago for around $8 million, making it worth theoretically less valuable than Sex.com?

Overstock.com was pushing for O.com for years and ended up getting O.co

I think PayPal.com actually owns X.com .. but they choose to stay with a 6 character domain.

There actually are 3 single letter .com's on the Internet today (Q, X and Z.com) .. does anybody even visit those? When Nissan owned Z.com .. was it really the killer name that significantly added to their bottom line?

So many points can be made both adding and removing from the potential value of a single letter .com .. what do you all think? More importantly .. what do you think the chances are that ICANN will actually auction these off one day?

If my English is correct, there are only 26 single letter domains available in dot com. That is rare right? If I am a company like Coke, do I buy C.com? It isn't like Pepsi can really use C.com right? But maybe Pepsi wants C.com to stop Coke from using it!

I do think that I may want my brand name in my domain though!

Good question.

If the average price of LL.com is $2,000,000 and there are 676 LL.com, then the value of an average L.com should be 26 times more valuable than the average LL.com.
L.com - $2,000,000x26=$52,000,000

Higher end price tag of L.com:
The LL.com, fb.com was sold for $8,500,000, then the best L.com should be 26 times higher than that due to rarity.
Best L.com, example: a.com price: $8,500,000x26=$221,000,000.

*Z.com was an exception, $6,784,000 was a steal.

All of the above is merely a speculation.

If the option was available, I would say $10M to $500M+.

Given the history of comparative sales and the growth pattern of the domaining industry (not forgetting the millennials and gen-x with their ever-growing recognition of domain name value and branding importance wrt startups and vc funding) I don't think it's impossible to reach mid-eight figures with the right buyer - whether an end user or domain investor.

As a domainer as well as a user & owner of websites, I look forward to owning a portfolio of branded two-letter .com's one day. When (not if) I reach a point where I'm earning enough to acquire a one-letter .com, I'll undoubtedly attempt to acquire it at the lowest price possible. But in truth, having the vast (intended in a modest way) knowledge I do about domaining and it's extensive value, I would pay whatever it cost to acquire one.

My approach would of-course be to acquire the domain name before creating a brand around it, so any one-letter .com will do. My existing brands won't change. Instead, the one-letter .com will serve as the holding company of my assets (or something to that effect).

It's a matter of time before domaining becomes a mainstream investment tool, and the wealthy will consider rare one & two-letter .com's as collector pieces (like rare art, cars, and the like). The value of the domain name will of-course come down to what the buyers are willing to pay for it ... with the depth of their pockets playing a significant role.

Let's play out a scenario as an analogy : Johnny Brow walks into a casino for the very first time in his life. He's heard a lot about it, with stories of success from all walks of life. It's an "almost too good to be true" concept to him, but he wants in on it nevertheless. He enjoys the idea of gambling, and so decides to responsibly limit his spend to what he has on him in cash. As soon as Johnny realizes that many others are in the casino chasing the same proverbial "carrot", and that some are progressing by the sound of bells and happy machine jingles, he sets his mind to consider upping his original spending limit. This is where the difference come in. What is Johnny's net worth, or how deep is his pockets. Did he jump from a $100 limit to a $500 limit, or from a $100,000 limit to a $50,000,000 limit?

Domain names (good, bad, brandable, liquid, whatever) is what the buyer values it at. So right this moment, I would say a one-letter .com is worth $10M to $500M+.

I really don't think a 1 character .com would be a good buy for anyone, besides icann deciding to not allow them there are a few that still exist. But.. they are all owned by big companies and I guess are a kind of status symbol. Fact is if any of them expire they will be deleted from the zone forever.

Would I like one? Same answer as anyone else here YES PLEASE! I just don't see them going for much more than a million really and some may not even reach that, you can get shorter domain names that make more sense for a lot less. Are 1 character .coms rare yes but does that really add to their value they have limited options imo, I would never buy just a domain name for millions unless it was versatile but you could buy a profitable business for less.

I think nowadays nobody tries domains, so a really short domain won't be so useful.

I think it would be more like: 4L.com End-user value: 10k
3L 100k
2L at least 1 million
1L at least 10 million.

There is a psychological barrier to go above $10 million because few businesses ever paid more than that for a domain and end-users tend to be conservative when spending money on a domain. In the current market around $10 million or slightly higher imo

Hands up who does not want a single letter .com.

OK I don't see any hands up so I guess everyone wants one, which means a single letter .com is worth a lot of dosh !

I expect most letters to sell above $10M

Fortune 500 companies can invest way more than $50 million if they really want the domain.
G.com can be worth a lot for Google.
I wouldn't be surprised if they will pay $100 million or even more in order to get it.

First things first
These 26 letters are NOT english , they are latin
there many more single letter .com domains registered

Btw
English is a west germanic language

For example

ā.com ( regular latin letter a with macron )
used in commercial names such as Drāno or Powerāde

So how much is a single letter .com worth❓

It,s about timing and up to the buyer

I argue that the other 23 single letters will be sold to corporate America within the next 5 years; for $10-$15 million each, just look at the Shoes.com deal for $9 million. With the collapse of brick & mortar stores in 2017 and increasing scarcity due to the eventual collapse of new gTLDS 2017-2018 by Q2 2018 all the Wall Street and MSM attention will move to e-commerce; which starts with a premium domain name. If 'domainers' believe they can compete with corporate $$$ for domains, they are sadly mistaken.

Initially, there will be a 2nd gold rush in premium keyword domains with commercial meaning, as those traditional advertising $$$$ are re-allocated towards digital advertising, SEO, and domain acquisition. However, by 2020, I predict, that as with every commercial industry the political whores will be utilized to the fullest extent by corporatists to strengthen the Anti-Cyber-squatting Act and 'reform' UDRP policy. Who will stop the lawmakers from defining domain names as property once lobbied by Wall Street? Applying eminent domain laws to certain categories of domain names?

Once all the strongest advocates for domain speculation are bought out, only GoDaddy and the corporations will own domains of commercial value. ICAAN will be under the control of corporatists by 2020-21.

...stay tuned.

if you were Coca-Cola you may be well advised to register c.com co.com cok.com Coke.com and all the .co's and the same with and without the deeded hyphen for their official name.
