I had an interesting discussion in another topic where some cyber domains were being discussed.

I said I would not purchase a domain with the word cyber in it because of the negative connotation of CyberBully.
I understand CyberSex will sell for huge money but technically it also has a negative connotation.

I find CyberBully is so entrenched in our society that I would not purchase a domain with that in the name, and I most certainly could not envision myself using it for business.

So I figured I would ask the question and open up some dialogue.

Having been a victim of cyber bullying in the past I may be unduly influenced by this, so I thought I would get a general opinion.

Would you use a domain name with www.CyberSomething.com for your business?

In a way I understand your reasoning; another one that would sell heaps is cybersecurity.

Indeed, a domain like this would be awesome to get.
CyberLibrary
CyberCafe
CyberLand
CyberSchool
CyberSafety
They all sound nice to me, I would definitely buy one if I could put it to use.

Absolutely, that plays off the negative connotation of the word and would probably get business because of it. Immediately when the average person sees the word cyber they think something negative so CyberSecurity is probably a perfect application where you want to evoke those type of feelings.

The term Cyber Security is such a huge market now and only getting bigger which helps add to the credibility of the word Cyber. I would absolutely without question use the term in a company name. Anyone who hears that word will automatically associate it with any company in the internet space. The best type of branding you can have for your business is one that has an associational thinking aspect in the name. Much more memorable this way.

Again Cyber safety comes to mind though, so you see even in your case you did think about it which means it has some bearing. Would I pick CyberCafe or Internet Cafe? If I was staking my livelihood on it I would pick a friendlier domain.

From a branding perspective the more memorable alliteration of Cyber Cafe is much more appealing then the very generic Internet Cafe.

Ok, so... Cast your votes guys... lets get an official count.

Remember the question is would YOU name your business Cyber something if it was your only business. Lets get around the obvious security applications for a second because in that case the name fits perfectly. I'm talking about everyday type of business applications.

Lets pretend you did open up a Cyber School and that was your only source of income. What about all the victims and mothers who associate that word with violence or porn?

Why not name it something else like VirtualSchool.com.
Less risk of alienating potential clients.

To really answer the question correctly we need to know exactly the type of business to see if it's a good fit or not. Cyber may work in one market but be a very bad choice for another.

Think about your main business and taking it online. Would you use the word cyber where you can order hamburgers online using an app?

So aside from security or domaining I'm trying to feel if there are other people like me that have the same impression. Like I said, having experienced cyber bullying first hand I could be alone in my thought process on this one.

I think it does not apply to many people creating private business' anymore, especially like it did in the 90's. Cyber Crimes, Cyber Investigation Division of .Gov, Cyber Criminals, and the like so your negative connotation is a good one.

Can utilize the negative connotation too. Think of something in the lines of cyber garments - it comes with an app that will inform your wife every time the garment is unbuttoned or unzipped :astronaut:

I own CyberExperts

Nothing wrong with building a business on this, but I understand the op has a bad perception of the word "cyber"

I don't think the word has a negative connotation, but it also feels like a really dated term which is the reason I would generally avoid it. There are of course exceptions though especially for security; as others mentioned CyberSecurity.com is a monster, even CyberExperts is solid as a brandable for a security company.

There are a decent flow of sales starting with "cyber" as well:

I don't have a problem with cyber.
Maybe it's a generational thing...

It depends on the niche.

Yeah exactly. The same thing has happened to the term "computer".

Here is the definition of the word Cyber:
------------------------------------------------------------
Relating to or characteristic of the culture of computers, information technology, and virtual reality.
"the cyber age"
synonyms: electronic, digital, wired, virtual, web, Internet, Net, online
"our relationship was more cyber than face-to-face"
------------------------------------------------------------
So basically it is NOT negative at all, it means Online or Internet. It is not used today as much as it once did before, but that does not make it bad. Saying Cyber-Bullying is exactly as saying Online-Bullying or Internet-Bullying or Web-Bullying Net-Bullying etc. these have the same meaning, would we want to disown these words too. I think cyber is a pretty awesome word (I don't own any domains that use this word) but I like it.

I guess the Cyberbully thing has left a deep everlasting impression, huh. haha

I don't think there's anything wrong with cyber themed domains, other than it being an antiquated term that was heavily used back in the early to mid 1990s, sort of like i or e was placed in front of almost every new online product or service. For a time during the initial bubble, it seemed every other domain was cyber this or cyber that. Now, not so much.

Thankfully, as with the i and e, its usage has been thinned out and carefully utilised in much more appropriate ways.
