information Top Topics: How Long Does It Take to Sell a Domain? How Do You Discover Trends?...

NameSilo
In this week's Top Topics, there is an excellent discussion based around discovering trending niches for potential investment, with some excellent advice from the community for trend investors. Elsewhere, John Berryhill gives an update on the HeidiPowell.com case and the we look at the costs involved in running a new domain name extension.

How Long Does It Take to Sell a Domain?

To survive as a domain name investor, the majority of us need to close sales on a regular basis to keep a cashflow in order to invest in new domains. A new investor has asked the community how long it takes to sell a domain name.

According to statistics quoted in this discussion, the average portfolio turnover is between one and two percent. This means that to achieve regular sales, an investor would need several hundred domain names in a portfolio. This doesn't take into account the quality of domains. A portfolio with high quality names will have a higher turnover, and sales will occur more frequently.

How Much Does It Cost to Operate a New Domain Extension?

New domain extensions (new gTLDs) have made headlines in recent weeks, thanks largely to Uniregistry's proposed renewal price increases. The price increases were explained by Frank Schilling of Uniregistry in a Domain Name Wire podcast this week. A very relevant question was asked by domainer @Mr Dobalina , who asked: What is the cost of operating a new extension?

Aside from acquisition costs, there seems to be a number of expenses involving infrastructure, legal fees and staffing. The question is discussed in detail here.

A HeidiPowell.com Update from John Berryhill

There has been a well publicised battle between Heidi Powell, the owner of HeidiPowell.com and Heidi Powell, the host of ABC's Extreme Weight Loss. It has been a long, fierce encounter that has seen ABC's Powell pursue the domain through court, and then via a trustee in the original Heidi Powell's bankruptcy hearing, offering $10,000 for the name.

Intellectual property attorney John Berryhill has recently given an update to the community regarding this case. A document attached to the discussion shows that the owner of HeidiPowell.com is now arguing that a domain name cannot be considered as property.

How Do You Discover Trending Niches?

Investing in trending industries or niches can be a profitable venture for some domain name investors. Trends such as augmented reality, virtual reality and cannabis domains have been popular in the past. But how do you discover trending niches?

If you are looking to invest in trends, and you want to discover emerging trends before they become mainstream, then this discussion may be exactly what you're looking for.

What Would Motivate You to Buy New gTLDs?

Some new domain extensions such as .XYZ and .CLUB have proved to be relatively popular among domain investors, whereas others have failed to capture much interest at all.

What would motivate you to invest in new domain extensions (new gTLDs) if you aren't already? Would it be a case of finding names that make sense in a specific extension, or would it come down to the registration and renewal prices?

How Long Does It Take to Sell a Domain?
average portfolio turnover is between one and two percent

how about you guys, do you agree or how much your percentage & how many domains you have?

2% is on the upper end for a superb domain portfolio.

Of my best 2,500 domains, I have a sell-through rate of 2.5% per year.

If I consider all of my domains, it's less than 1% for my domain portfolio, but 1% is plenty to make millions if you accumulate an impressive portfolio (quantity and quality).

I sold an gave away 100 domains so far this year. None of them where buzz words from the news or current events, most were exact keyword search phrases.

Please clarify, did you sell or give them away?
