Hello.
I don't know if we have IT people on NamePros familiar with SSL certificates, but I have a question and would really appreciate to get some help.
All companies and domains mentioned are purely for example purpose.
Lets say company OKBoss Inc. currently own the domain name www.okboss.com, registered at Enom. They configured the DNS to point to their hosting plan on HostRat and they have their valid SSL certificate on HostRat aswell for their domain www.okboss.com
Now, I made a new website for them. Its ready to be used but it is installed at a different hosting company. Let's say its at HostSquirrel.
At Enom, when they'll be ready, I will only change the DNS to point to the new server IP at HostSquirrel and it will work. That part I understand and I am familiar with.
My question is regarding the SSL certificate. Currently a PFX file.
Can I take the same PFX file that I use at HostRat and install it at HostSquirrel and it will work as soon as the DNS is changed, the new website will be working HTTPS.
Or do I need to have a new certificate issued for the new server? If I have a new certificate issued for the domain, will the one that currently active stop working immediately?
My fear is to have a downtime because of the certificate.
I want the current certificate to remain active for as long as the DNS is changed. And I need to have a certificate installed on the new server in advance to make sure the website HTTPS will work as soon as DNS is changed.
I don't know if I am clear. Anyone can enlighten me on this topic?
