Sold a site I bought for $5 here for $2,200!

A bit of luck, but mostly a strong intuition that the site name I bought here in a domain pickup thread was a bit undervalued. Once I got the site, put together a full templated news site with images and ad placements, contact forms, the whole 9 yards. Was going to try for high hundreds ("suggested" price was $150), but when a guy sent me an email absolutely needing the site for a startup, and having the cash, I started at $2,500, and only came down $300.

Namepros is da bomb!

Out of the blue a guy emailed you that he wanted the site, wow this is called the lucky day ;)

Nicely done @Rantwire, how much time/$ did you put into developing it if you don't mind me asking, and did the end user end up keeping the site or did they just want it for the name?

Don't say luck. Don't sell yourself short you did things to make it happen.

If that domain is the domain of the website etc - the domain is worth the price of the website alone

The name was a common name, though with a .us sub-TLD, so I was going to use it as a news template. I set it up completely, including getting a facebook and twitter page, along with a gmail account. Google now requires a phone number to open a new account, and in addition they refuse new accounts to phones who are already connected with one, so I probably won't do that anymore, but at least I got the facebook and twitter accounts.

Next, I put together a template I have ready, a WP Genesis Framework theme called Executive Pro, which allows me to quickly put together a decent site in less than a couple of hours. I've done this for other hand-regged sites and throw on my Hostgator reselling host. (In this case, I threw in hosting his site with a GB Bandwidth monthly restriction which is allowing him to develop at his own pace.)

Finally, with my new Twitter account, I got a Gravatar account with a specialized "logo" I threw together and then made the site live. With the twitter account, I hit all the main blogs and sites with soft sale posts.

One of the respondents had emailed me three times within 20 minutes, safe to say he was a motivated buyer. In two days we had our deal.

Nicely done mate....

I reckon apart from the domain being attractive you must have done a kick @ss job with the layout and design to get the buyer as hungry as he was for ur site! :)

Well played indeed!

Ducoc.com is my site still. I'm trying to develop it as an art theme using artist Lucien Ducoc as the French-based artist.

The one I sold for now is confidential, but it is expected to be an alternate news site for an organization that just got a white house press pass, and they are branding their organization around the domain name. Once its up and running they will let me release the name.
