FOG is the new CLOUD.

Has anyone been reading up on Fog Computing recently? Cisco have brought it to the table to aid the Internet of Things (again).

Anyway, don't know much about it and it's yet another new buzz word to appear this year but I'm starting to get 'registration fatigue' ;) so feel free to look it up and see what's available, although I was surprised at how many FOG related domains have already gone. My two are:

FogServers.com

Fog360.com

MIST Computing: the perfect technical architecture paradigm?
Mist computing
might be THE solution bridging the gap between central cloud and edge decentralization. A mist device is an edge/fog device with super-powers similar to the ones found in cloud servers. For example, our mist devices allow:

  • Local analytics and decision-making data using big data DB and processes
  • Learning and adapting machines
  • Mutli-apps
  • Redundant, Resilient and Highly Robust data and apps
  • Root of trust similar to HSM modules found a cloud server area
  • Data access control mechanism to enforce privacy consent at a local level and security & privacy by design / by default
Obviously, Mist and Cloud computing are complementary to each other as offline and online usages are complementary to each other. Nevertheless, in a perfect distributed architecture, the very interesting idea is that a mist application does not require the cloud and vice-versa!

I backordered FogStorage.com with dropcatch last year, the only time they lost a domain with me so far, went to someone in China :\

Ive dropped a good amount of fog names. I still have a few. I think if it emerges its still going to be about 4 to 5 years :/

Very true.
I always consider tech names to be a very long term investment so I always ask myself before buying such names if I'm prepared to hold them for at least 5 years. If the answer is yes, only then I consider registering them.
It's also a good idea to register the better ones for at least 5+ years ahead.

Snails pace progress, but still a consistent up trend year on year.

"Fog Computing"

I still get traffic (made a few bucks in parking rev off one) and I recently had an interesting IP crop up on my server out of Silicon Valley.

Nothing has changed with the tech, just don't expect mass rollouts and main stream adoption of the tech/term to happen over night. I'm happy to sink 5-10 years of renewals into the handful of names I still have. One has seen corporate interest to date (cisco).

All these upcoming tech threads share a similar pattern, folks reg way too much and renewal bills force them to drop and they become disillusioned.

Let's look at Cloud. It first cropped up in 2006, the cloud showcase thread on NP started in 2011.

This is the first major cloud sale that I can find which happened in late 2010.

cloud-computing.de 38,280 USD 2010-08-05 Sedo

Patience is key, of course so too are good names.

I'll keep only:

FogComputer.com

FogInternet.com

That's it for me

Not one sale on this thread in 2 years or whatever it is feels too long, although I had to wait roughly 3 years before I started selling off some of my 3D printing portfolio. At the end of the day, it's all speculation, especially when hand registering future trend domain names, although would expect to eventually see some sales within this niche...

I have ca. 200 fog domains.

If we compare 2014 from 2017 then this is the abyss.

Patience.

As previously stated, this is definitely a game of patience. Im down to maybe 20 or so fog names only kept the best, but I will continue renewing them as I still see fog gaining traction.

Here is a huge expo coming up:
